I dehydrated ground chuck, tomatoes, apples, apple junk, applesauce, cooked asparagus and beef jerky.  I searched FarmBell and here and didn't find any posts on what to do with the dehydrated foods once dehydrated.  I have ground the apple junk and made oatmeal mix.  KellyB told us that we could grind the tomatoes to add flavoring to soups, etc.  But can anyone post about rehydrating how tos, quantity dehydrated = quantity hydrated, and mixing dehydrated things for possible meals?  I failed (but recovered) just trying to make the oatmeal mix (obviously, I cannot create recipes). Please post your recipes on Farmbell and post a link here.  Thank you so much.

Also do a search for 'backpacking food recipes' and you'll be amazed at what you find. Lots of cool ideas for meals in a mug, cozies to wrap around a bowl or mug to speed rehydration, etc. I can't find the link to my fav site – I will keep looking or perhaps it will just come to me LOL

If common sense were truly common, wouldn't there be more evidence of it?

Thanks for starting this topic.  I am new to this dehydrating world and I am loving it.

Speaking of the recipes….. I was given a watermelon and I want to dehydrate it.  Yours was so yummy at the retreat.  Please share your steps to dehydrating watermelon again.

And, lastly I dehyrated some cabbage a few weeks ago.  Then with the cooler weather, I made some soup the other day.  I put in the dehydrated cabbage and yum! I wished I had more dehydrated veggies to put into that pot.  Now, I am on the lookout for "el cheapo" veggies to dehydrate.

Happy dehydrating,

Stephaniechicken

Go to the grocery store early in the a.m. – about an hour or two after they've opened and you'll find produce that is marked down. Peppers that normally sell for $4 a package (one each, red, green, yellow and orange) were 99cents. Bananas normally 89cents were a whole bag for $1.49. Portabellos normally 2.99 for an 8 oz pkg was 99cents. At least that's what happens here locally. Sometimes they're in a cart by themselves, sometimes placed with like items but have a mark-down sticker on them, sometimes on a special shelf/cart in produce section.

cincyjojo,

I don't really have recipes for the foods I make with my dried goodies.  I tend to make a lot of soups so that's just throwing a few things in a crockpot and hoping for the best.  It's kind of how I make soup with fresh/frozen foods.  Check out a recipe you like and see if you can adapt it to your tastes and what you have on hand.  I made a really good butternut squash/apple soup this past weekend.  It called for fresh butternut which I didn't have.  You were supposed to cook the squash with a medium onion and a few apples, then puree with butter, cream, apple cider, maple syrup and nutmeg.  I just threw in a generous handfull of dried butternut squash with the onion.  It rehydrated as it cooked.  I used a 1/2 pint of unsweetened applesauce in place of the cooked apples.  I think it was delicious.

Is there anything in particular that you're looking for?  I'll second the recommendation on the http://www.dehydrate2store.com  website.  Great videos and recipes. I always add some dried carrots, celery and onion to any broth I'm using.  It makes the flavor outstanding and really perks up gravy or soup broth.

I found this website last night, Cincyjojo.  I think it might be right up your alley!  And his recipes look delicious.  I'm also completely intrigued by his take on "bark."  Check it!
