Thanks Cindy for the directions to the cookbook !!!

I went looking and found this recipe that was posted by Alanna… sounds yummy. Thanks Alanna!!

Maple Walnut Cookies

1 1/4 firmly packed b. sugar

3/4 cup butter flavored crisco

2 tbl. maple syrup

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp. maple extract

1 egg

1 3/4 cup flour

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place b. sugar, shortening, m.syrup, vanilla and maple extract in lg. bowl. Beat at med. speed until well-blended. Ad  egg. Beat well. Combine all dry ingred.Add to creamed mixture. Beat at low speed until just blended. Stir in walnuts. Drop onto parchment 3'' apart. Bake 8-10 min for chewy cookies or 11-13 for crisp. Do not over bake. Cool 2 min before removing cookies. Makes 3 doz.

Great maple flavor-do not use real butter in these or they will be flat instead of puffy.

EDIT:  This recipe is over on FBR!  http://chickensintheroad.com/f…..t-cookies/

I've never met a Christmas Cooky that I didn't like. HA,Ha! But, this is my family's favorite -hands down. I just made these for 2 Open Houses for my friends. Betty Crocker Best Cooky of 1955-1960— Bon Bon Cookies

1/2 cup butter

3/4 powdered sugar

1 tbl. vanilla or I use Watkins almond flavoring  2 tsp.

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/8 tsp. salt

Filling:drained maraschino cherries or Hershey kisses

Bon Bon Icing/Toppings -coconut,chopped nuts , sprinkles-Xmas types

Mix butter, sugar, vanilla or almond flavoring, food coloring if desired. Blend in flour and salt. If dough is dry add 1-2 Tbl. milk.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For each cooky wrap 1 Tbl. dough around cherry or kiss. Bake 1' apart on parchment paper 12-15 min.,or until set but not brown. Cool; dip tops of cookies in glaze. I usually tint some pink with the juice from the cherries and some green with food coloring. Top with toppings. Makes 2 dozen. I usually quad. this recipe. Put in little fancy paper cups! Freeze well!chef

Let's not forget that recipes should be posted over in Farm Bell Recipes so that they don't get lost in the forum topics.  We want to be able to find them later, after all!

Both of these sound just wonderful.  Looks like it's going to be a happy season, with lots of Christmas cookies!

I don't have a recipe to post but Suzanne posted the same recipe Mom used awhile back so I know it's on Farm Bell somewhere.

My favorite Christmas cookies were Sand Tarts.  Mom always made them at Christmas time and I loved dunking my crispy sand tart in tea.  She made them really flat and crispy without leavening. So cinnamony and sweet and just right with a cup of hot tea. Brings back lots of wonderful old memories!

Thanks Kellyb for the cyber cooky exchange idea.  I'll have to get Mom's cookbook out and see if I can come up with other old fashioned treats to exchange.  happy-flower

NorthCountryGirl-I've heard of Sand Tarts, but I've never eaten them or made them . I live near a old town that was settled by the Germans years ago. Are them a German cooky? I want to make Cherry Winks this year,I believe that they were popular in the 1960's. They were a good soft cooky!

Sounds great, Alanna!  My Mom made something she called a Cherry Wink (iirc) in the 50's made with cornflakes with a small piece of a cherry on top.  Maybe they were called something else – they were sort of crunchy.  But she did make them as a special holiday treat and no other time of the year.

Pete, I have this recipe for Cherry Winks, that is on the side panel from an old Kelloggs cornflake cereal box. I'm sure I have had it since the early or mid 60's. I had to look long and hard," I knew I had it, just didn't know where I had it". Thanks for reminding me about this  recipe. I also have one for Tiger cookies, made with Sugar Frosted Flakes with melted chocolate marbled through the dough before they are baked. These were two of my kid's favorite cookies. Posted Cherry Winks on FBR, Tiger cookies to follow, whenever the recipe reappears.

Hey, guys, could you post recipes on Farm Bell Recipes, please?  There is a reason I started FBR–people were sharing recipes on the forum–and then NO ONE COULD FIND THEM AGAIN.  Farm Bell Recipes is categorized and easily searchable.  Please, please, please post recipes there and not here!  Come here and tell us what favorite Christmas cookie you posted–but if you post it here, within days it will be sucked down in the morass of posts and topics here and be lost.  Let your recipe shine (and be searchable).  Post it on FBR!!!

Just posted a recipe for Cherry Squares that are good for the holidays.
You can use any fruit thickened or I usually use thickened pineapple to
make them with a little bit of grated orange in the crumb topping.

My favorite Christmas cookie is one we call Russian Tea Balls.  Butter and pecans, what could be better!

These are also my favorite, although in my family we call them Russian Tea Cakes.  I found out recently that they are the same thing as Mexican Wedding Cookies, just shaped differently!  The Cook's Illustrated Holiday Baking edition features them.  I'll go post it on FBR right now.  :D

My family's Christmas Cookies always include Lebkuchen, pfeffernusse, Peanutbutter kisses, and sometimes sugar cookies.  Can you tell we're German?  french

MrsFuzz: already made my pfeffernusse—they're aging in the (unheated) front  hallway. I make the hard-as-rock kind. Made the holiday fruit gems (posted on FBR) as  well. The dough for the lebkuchen is in the fridge for baking tomorrow. Yup, it's a German holiday kitchen here! Only one concession, boozy bourbon balls. (these are aging in the hallway, too.)
