Bet every one of us has peeled a potato or three!  And everyone has their favorite way of doing it.  Or maybe how they do it in spite of rather being anywhere but behind the peeler.

Here's an interesting alternative that most of us may never have heard of before.  I'm going to try it becuase it sure beats anything I've tried so far!

Pete, that is so funny! I'm going to try it soon. Although she should have used a "Maine potato".smile

I remember my mom doing it that way.  I had forgotten that. Thanks for sharing…

happy-flowerI am certainly going to try that next time I make potato salad, I like leaving the peels on when I cook them, but removing the peels when they are hot is a bear.

That was so cool!!! I just got my husband off his addiction to "Boxed" Mashed Potatoes now all he wants is the real stuff. But I got lazy over the years of making the boxed stuff, but now I have no excuse for not making them.

LOL funny Ross I thought the same thing… I can't imagine wasting the energy to heat the water too.

LOL, Pete!!!

Well, maybe if you don't want to actually *boil* potatoes – for instance, maybe you want to roast them, or shred them for potato cakes. Then you'd still have to peel them regular like.

But if you're boiling them anyway, or making potato salad, then it'd work fine!

Ahhh but no one said she was cooking them in boiling water… if you were then that would be different. But then you're wasting the ice.  They were only talking about peeling them so we don't know how they were going to cook them.  pawprint

Um…it's a novel way to peel potatoes to be sure. However, in the time it would take to get the pot and fill it with water then bring the pot to boil;  score each potatao and put the potatoes in the pot; boil the potatoes for 15 minutes; fill a pan with ice cubes;  take each potato  out of the water; put each potato into the ice cubes and dunk them up and down for another minute or two; take each potato out of the ice and then squeeze the skins off…….I could have peeled an entire 5 lb bag of potatoes, made a pot of tea, read my mail, and propped up my feet and finished watching the Novel Potato Peeling video.  Just saying…. Maybe it's me, but doesn't that seem like an extraordinary amount of time and effort to do a job that would only take maybe 10 minutes to do???  And, I hate to waste the ice, too!!  happy-flower

Yes, I see your point, but I am still curious how you boil potatoes (whether they are peeled or unpeeled) without heating water!

If I could hold a potato peeler comfortably, I might consider it an easy job also.  But that is still beside the point.  A couple of folks objected to using water to boil potatoes, so it tickles my curiosity about how one can prepare potaoes for mashed potatoes and/or potato salad (where most of us boil potatoes before finishing their prep) without using water to boil them.

No big deal.  No one is expecting awards for this silly video, but it was an eye opener for some of us.  A real ahah moment.  Then the conversation kinda went sideways.  Inquring minds need to know!

How do you boil potatoes without using water!  Please!!  Will somebody clue we who are clueless about how to do that in on the secret!!!

You can't boil potatoes without heating the water.  no

I think the whole point was using that method just to peel the potato in the first place. If you were going to make something requiring boiled potatoes it would be fine to use that method. BUT, what about French fries, or fried potatoes or hash browns…recipes that require you start with peeled uncooked potatoes?  In that case, boiling them to peel them would not be feasable.

I think the comments about the boiling water and ice were in regards to all the steps, time, and resources invested in the simple act of peeling a potato by boiling water vs. a knife or peeler.

ANYWAY:  You must admit, it is a novel way to peel potatoes.  Albeit, one that requires extra steps, resources, and time …but a novel way nonetheless!   yes

Thank you, Pete, for posting the link.  And don't be offended about the my ice comments.  I hate to use ice to cool down my hardboiled eggs when I peel them.  I guess it's cause we buy it by the bag and I hate to use it just to cool things down. (Even though it really does work better using the ice!)

happy-flowerHello–I thought the original post  was very interesting, and was meant more as a fun post. I think most of us know how to cook potatoes, and probably don't mind peeling them as well,  but it is always interesting to lean new and different techniques wheter we use them or not. I guess it is like my reading recipe books and thinking to my self how interesting this or  that  may sound, or that sounds really good, but I know I will never make most of what I read, but I enjoy reading about different ways to prepare food.

I've done this quite often just not using the ice…..I just drain the water and fill with cold tap water, like I would with eggs, the skins come right off.

They don't have to be cooked completely so they can be used for other things besides boiled potatoes….french fries, fried potatoes, hash browns.

Joell:  I think you've summed it up perfectly.  It was a fun post and informative.  I learned something I didn't know and I always enjoy learning new things.  And I believe the comments were all in good fun, too.
