OfflineI cooked 20 lbs of hamburger yesterday and have a large tub of the fat from draining the burger. Can I process that fat in some manner and use it as my beef tallow? If so, do you know how I'd need to process the fat? I just couldn't throw it away. I figure if I can't use it for soap I'll give it to the birds.

OfflineI decided I was going to just give my tallow making a whirl. I took my hamburger fat and melted it on high in the crockpot for about 30 minutes. I allowed it to cool a little and then I lined a fine mesh strainer with paper towels and poured the melted fat thru the strainer. It strained out all the little bits of stuff. I now have a lovely bowl of gorgeous golden beef fat sitting in the snow on my back porch. When it solidifies, I'll lift the fat off the liquids and remelt and strain again. At that point I should have pretty much plain old beef fat. At least that's what I'm going to call it in my world. I'm then going to try my hand at your mechanics soap.
Any problems in my thought process that anyone sees? If so, can you point them out to me. I'm pretty excited about using something I would normally consider a waste to make soap. Gosh, this is addicting.
