Remembering the Bread Bowl

I was doing a little refreshing (feeding) of my sourdough starter and the old fashioned bread bowl popped into my mind.  My Grandmother and my Mother and my Aunts all had bread bowls.  They mixed bread or biscuits in them daily and they were rarely washed.  they were caked with flour and everday more flour was added, a well made in the middle and all the wet ingredients dumped in and slowly the biscuits or bread was mixed until just the right amount of flour and then it was removed and kneaded.  The bread bowl was then covered with a clean distowel and put back in the cabinet…usually the cabinet right below where the kneading was done..Whatever flour was left in the bowl stayed there and would be in tomorrows bread…That's the way it was done in the old days..

Every summer I used to spend a month or so with my Aunt Johnnye Ruth who I was named after.  and every night before bedtime, she went to the kitchen, took out the bread bowl, got the starter out of the fridge, mixed sourdough batter for biscuits and shoved it back in the fridge.  The next moring she pulled out the bowl from the fridge, dumped it on the floured dish towel and rolled out the biscuits and popped them in the oven….I loved her biscuits.  I think that is probably why I'm so wrapped up in sourdough.

Some of the bowls were round and some rectangular but with round ends….lots of the time the really old ones  were hand carved and are prized possessions these days.  Considered antiques and they sell for several hundred dollars.  People use them these days for decorations and displaying decorations for whatever season…

Oh Ruthie….I think you are a woman of my own heart!

I LOVE bread bowls and have collected a few of them.  I do use them when I mix up bread that I make using the fermented method.   I don't let the flour or dough cake on the side though, I always wipe it clean but never use soap on it.  I believe the yeast permeates the wood and just makes each batch of bread dough better than the one before.  I do what your Aunt did, make a small batch of dough or what some call a biga, to ferment and develop flavor the night before.  I cover it and let it sit on my counter until mid morning and then I make my bread.

I have noticed here and over at another forum you do make bread all the time.  I have made some of the bread recipes you have given and they turn out really good!

I think a deep connection to things past is one of the things that bring us all here to CIR. I would love to see the bread bowls you have. Canu post a picture to share with us?

Maybe Suzanne would be interested in doing an article on it as well. I wonder how many other "chickens" have breadbowls from the past?

Oh that's so neat!  I have a glass bowl – that I call my bread bowl.  It's the perfect size for mixing bread but I would love to find an old wooden one.  I'd love to see photos of yours.

Lehman's non-electric catalog sells new bread bowls for a very reasonable price.  They are made with Tupelo wood and get better and better with use.  My father bought me one years ago, but I lost it during a move Cry.  I'm going to buy myself new one one of these days, though Yes.

p.s.  That feeling of a deep connection to the past is partly why I love to spin and weave so much.

p.p.s.  Just google "Lehman's" and it should give it to you.  If you love old-fashion stuff as much as I do, you'll love browsing their site.

I had never heard of a bread bowl, but the wooden ones on a stand are real cute.

Next month I finally pick up my petroleum? burner it is a real old burner to cook on.

One of other high tech, kitchen helpers from yesteryears.

I remember when I was a little girl, our neighbor had one and had meat simmering on there for hours…mmmmm, draadjesvlees.

A friend found a complete one..knew I would love one so she bought it now I only have to pick it up..and try to get it in my suitcase, to bring "home"

I live within driving distance of Lehman's!  It's about an hour south of me, and well worth a trip! Yes  Naa naa naa naa boo boo!    It's a very cool place in person!  …sorry, just couldn't resist bragging!  If you think it's dangerous to go there on line, trust me, it's WAYYYY more dangerous in person.  It's a sprawling place and you can easily spend hours there.

Well, it's an hour or a bit more away from me and it's not easy for me to go that way, of course it's also pretty near Meyer's Hatchery so a springtime run isn't out of the question!!!

It is huge and I've never gone there and spent less than $200 and could so easily spend MUCH MUCH more, so I need to plan ahead on many levels.  Budgeting time AND money!!

There's some things that they don't carry in the store like the Kerosene Incubator!  I always thought that was very intrigueing.  The kitchen section is to die for though.  All the wonderful storage jars, not just canning jars and stoneware crocks and… oh my, I'm starting to tremble!

Oh, for any soapmakers, they have good supplies for that too.

We've really hijacked this thread badly though!  To get it at least a little back on track, a good stoneware crock would be good for keeping sourdough starter in and they have other great mixing bowls too.  I do like the sound of a nice wooden bowl for bread.  My grandmother's stoneware one is good for large batches of bread, but it's too big for most things and it holds a chill too which is why a wooden one would be so good.  Hmmm Help gonna have to have a look next trip.

I've bought several really nice wood bowls from Target to use as dough bowls.  One is made from Tupelo wood.  I keep them oiled and they are soooo pretty.   One bowl I really love I found at the Goodwill store buried under a lot of pots and pans.  It was a gray color but no cracks at all.  I bought it for a dollar, took it home cleaned it with a couple drops of mild soap in warm water.  Then I dried it really well and oiled it.  That wood has the prettiest grain to it that I have ever seen.  I don't think it was used for anything harmful, the wood has not picked up any "off" smell.  I think it might have been a salad bowl or something like that.  But I have used it for mixing up my doughs and letting them rise in that bowl.  It is one of my favorites.

Lehman's isn't Amish, but it carries things the Amish use because of their non-electric culture.  And the store itself is situated in Amish country (Ohio has a large Amish population), as does Pennsylvania, where I am from.  Oh, and it also carries some things made by the Amish.
