I have been baking my own breads for several years and in the past couple of years have become interested in collecting stories and recipes for salt rising bread.  I use a personal favorite recipe that starts with potatoes, but would like to see if there's anybody else out there who would be interested in discussing this tasty addition to the world of bread-baking.

I also maintain two distinct sourdough cultures, one of my own that's about five years old, begun with pineapple juice and the other I obtained from a lady in Oregon who claims hers came from an eighty-year-old starter she had kept going.  This is another particular love of mine–sourdough cultures.  Anybody who'd like to discuss this is also welcome to chime in!

By the way, Grandmother's Bread recipe, both the non-sourdough and sourdough version, is the most foolproof bread recipe I've ever had the pleasure to use.  It produces "works of art" loaves with minimal effort!

I use a potato starter for my salt rising bread also!  I remember my Grandmother making this bread both in Virginia and in Florida.  It has such a unique taste!  I recently read why it is called "salt rising".  In the older days one mounded rock salt around the bowl to help contain the heat.

Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?

My Grandmother used to make salt rising bread.  I can't ever seem to get it to turn out.  I even use her old crock to make the starter also using potatoes.  Just don't have the right place to put the starter I guess.  I am also in Virginia.

I've been baking bread for a bit, and kept my own starter for a couple of years.  I lost it in the divorce along with the dog.  LOL  I've never heard of salt rising bread, though??  What is it?  Sounds like something new & fun to experiment with!

Wearing cowboy boots does not make one an agriculturist….Having at least 3 varieties of poop on them does.
