OfflineA lot of friends have been posting on FB about what they are doing today to get ready for tomorrow.
My husband likes to cook and he and the kids made some pies. He made a pumpkin-cream cheese pie, a chocolate cream pie and an Oreo cream pie. He's going to make some pumpkin pies and some syrup pies.
Speaking of syrup pies. Has anyone else heard of this? It's like a pecan pie without the pecans. It's made with dark Karo syrup. It's VERY sweet. His Granny has always made them and it's a family tradition.

OfflineCassie I am on the next plane. Would love to know more about the syrup pies. Pecan pie is my favorite and since no one else in my family eats them I don't make them.
My contributions to dinner (at our son's) are in the refrigerator waiting to be cooked (rolls and dressing), the grape salad is chilling as well as the jellied cranberry sauce.

OfflineI've just made Old Fashioned Pies, now on to deviled eggs. I'll also be picking fresh broccoli from the garden for dipping. Fresh turnips are cooked and ready later we will be fring catfish and hush puppies. The rest of the family will be adding their contributions to the feast. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

OfflineMaybe DH will let me post the recipe or Syrup Pie. I'll ask him. I know that there is sugar, dark karo syrup, and shortening. My mom thought maybe it was a southern thing but his family isn't from the south. Of course it could be from the south anyway. No one I know has ever heard of it.

OfflineMy ex-MIL used to make syrup pie like that. I'm not sure if she used dark Karo or sorghum.
For a few years when I was a kid there was a fad at the Tupperware parties and baby showers in our town to serve chess tarts. They were little pie crust tarts with a filling like that mixed with walnuts and raisins. So good!

OfflineNot sure if it is bragging or complaining, but the only prep we had to do this year was to take the frozen Cheesecake Factory pumpkin cheesecake out of the freezer the day before Thanksgiving!
OK, it really wasn't supposed to be quite that easy, but when I pulled out the sweet potatoes, there weren't quite 4 pounds after all. Was trying a new recipe, had contemplated doubling it, then changed back to trying the single recipe as a first trial. It's for a sweet potato salad (much like any potato salad) with pecans and dried cranberries. The sweet potatoes are roasted, so thought doing that the day before would be a good idea. If there had been enough!
So Thanksgiving morning got complicated around here!
What with all that peeling and dicing and roasting, then slicing green onions. Oh, and the mixing of the dressing!
Turned out to be pretty tasty stuff. It's a keeper!
