OfflineI know some people make egg noodles with the food processor, and I like to slice potatoes thin to make scalloped potatoes. The one I had ws one of the little bitty ones that doesn't hold much, and the chute for the slicer was really narrow. I was wanting one that I could more easily make chicken salad in, so I finally took the plunge and got a bigger one, with two different sized bowls.
Does anyone have any suggestions for other ways to use this handy appliance?

OfflineI bought my first big processor at a garage sale this summer. It is a Sunbeam from the 1980's, I paid $5 for it and I love it. Can't believe I managed so long without one.
So far, I use it to chop up 3 or 4 onions at a time to store in my fridge for the weeks dinners. That way I am not cutting every time i cook. I make my homemade Ranch Dressing Mix (from Farmbell), I chopped all the extra peppers from my garden and froze them in 1 cup servings.
I used it when I made my salsa, Bread And Butter pickles and pear jam. And I shred cheese!
Lots of cheese!
I'm sure the one you bought does even more. Good luck and have fun with it!

OfflineI have a 12 cup KA which I use for chopping veggies for relish, for spaghetti sauce and anything else I need a large quantity that the 6-8 cup doesn't handle. It is also good for making pizza dough and a quantity of pie crusts for the freezer.
And Ross, the small one is a good paper weight but the big one is a tad large!

OfflineI have a Regal from the 1980's. The only thing I use it for is to chop up rhubarb and strawberries in the spring when I make my jam. Oh…and I did use it last Xmas when I made cranberry relish from FarmBell.
So, mostly it just sits in the cupboard covered up with a dish towel!

OfflineThanks for all your answers! I also recently replaced my old crock pot (my boys had lost the lid and it was one of the oval type) and I have bought some other computer euipment, and I noticed something. The new trend seems to be to put very little in the way of instructions. And there are none of the handy little recipe books you used to get with every appliance. I buy most of the things I need secondhand when I can find them, but I always used to get a handy dandy recipe book when I bought things in years past.
I made egg noodles tonight, and though I don't think they were much different than when I mix them by hand my guys inhaled them, and they were sure faster to make.
I might try pie crusts, and crackers in the food processor next. I've been itching to try the copycat wheat thins recipe.
In the mean time I do have a few chives of my own I really need to do something with. Mamawolf when you do pizza crust do you have to use a dough hook? Mine didn't come with one and I had no idea you could get one with a hook but I read about it in a recipe when I looked it up.

OfflineHi Courtney. I used just the regular knife blade for the pizza dough because the dough blade has hidden itself somewhere and I have yet to find it. Knife blade worked fine. Enjoy your new processor.

OfflineI have two food processors. One large and one mini. I use them both! I use them for hiding veggies in different foods for my kids. They got a work out when I was making my own baby food. I used the large one to shred a 5 lb block of cheese in a very short amount of time! Other things I have used them for is pie dough, making cracker/bread crumbs, salsa, so many things that I can't even think of right now. I use both of my processors at least once a week if not more.
Now for a funny food processor story.
My old food processor finally quit working. My husband came home from work and I started complaining to him that it quit and I couldn't get it to work anymore. So, what does my ingenious husband do? He looks at the food processor, starts muttering to himself, takes the lid out into the garage and grabs some tools. A few minutes later, he walks back into the kitchen with the lid that now has a hole drilled in it and a drill with a socket attached to it. He puts the food processor back together, sticks the drill on top and says, "Look, honey, I fixed it!" He turns on the drill and whirrrrr, the blade is spinning at supersonic speed! "And it even works backwards!" He switches the drill to reverse and whirrrrr. In between my fits of laughter, I manage to say, "So, anytime I need to use my food processor, I need to go out to the garage?" Sometimes, it is both a blessing and a curse to have a husband that can 'fix' anything. It does make some interesting stories, though. A few days later, he come walking in carrying a brand new food processor.

OfflineI use mine to make butter, shred Fels Naptha for laundry detergent, make pie crusts, shred carrots and zuchinni for salad and many more things that I can't think of right now. Don't use it everyday, but when you need it, it can be very handy. I do wash it after the soap! My mother uses hers to cut up all her onions and peppers when she makes chili sauce. She used to make 300 pints a year to sell, so it really got a work out.

OfflineI use mine for all kinds of stuff. I shredded two huge zucchini into perfect shreds in about 90 seconds right before the Retreat. Aside from the "normal" stuff described here, it's also great for "abnormal" stuff, like making mayonnaise & hollandaise. Chopping nuts for baking. Making bread crumbs. Graham cracker crumbs. Pie crusts are simple & awesome. Here's something I haven't tried yet, but really want to. Dicing meat for hamburgers & sausage. I get Cooks Illustrated, and they highly recommend using an FP for that, because it doesn't crush the meat, and it doesn't generate as much heat as a grinder. They had this really good salmon burger recipe I want to try….
So, in closing, FP's are amazing, awesome, timesaving devices. I love my KA 12 C (particularly because it has a smaller bowl size to insert into the bigger bowl for small jobs). I am planning a batch of Jalapeno Cherry Jam later today, and plan to use mine to puree the peppers & rough chop the cherries. Then all I have to do is cook!

OfflineOkay, last night I used mine to make butter like I always DO, and low and behold, I had CREAM flying out all over the place, this has NEVER happened, not sure if it was HUMAN ERROR or not. Rushed to get the rest of the cream in mason jars to shake, I was not trying that again, what a mess, I had cream running everywhere. I do love my food processor though, I use it for all kinds of things and this has never happened before, maybe it just does not like cream. ![]()
