A few moments ago I went to the pantry to gather the things I need to bake a cake tomorrow morning, and noticed my vanilla bottle was nearly empty. Holiday baking season is not that far away and you know we use a lot of vanilla in our baking, and you also know how pricey really good vanilla can be. Several years ago Suzanne did a post on "Homemade Vanilla" the instructions can be found on Farm Bell, it is really worth reading, I made a bottle and love using it. I have given small bottles as little gift to my friends that like to bake and they all say it is the best they have ever used. I also like putting a little into a hot cup of coffee on a cold day.

It is a simple recipe but the results are very big in flavor. Now would be a good time to make a bottle for the Holidays, mine had turned very dark in color and the fragrance is wonderful. I normally cut back on the amount called for in a recipe because this vanilla is much stronger than store bought, unless of course you like a strong vanilla flavor. I hope you give ti a try, it is so worthwhile and you will be hooked on your very own homemade vanilla.

Since I read that post I make my own, also.  It is just a fraction of what I would spend on storebought and it last a long time.

One of the granddaughters watched me pull the bottle out of the cabinet one day and nearly fainted when she saw the Vodka label (I make and keep it in the bottle).  She couldn't believe that grandma was feeding her liquor.

Hello mamajhk--we have a couple of young(er) friends that visit, and when I make coffee in the kitchen, one of them will ask "where is the vanilla bottle?" a bit will go into their coffee cups. Yesterday when I was refilling my smaller bottle, I spilled a bit and some got on my arm, later Hubby asked me what kind of perfume I was wearing--said it smelled nice, it was the vanilla.wink

I made some vanilla extract from Suzanne's recipe a couple of years ago and gave a few small bottles away as gifts, and kept a big bottle for myself. It smells like heaven, I'm sure. I was at my mother-in-law's the other day and she had some banana pudding for dessert and I said, "This is the best you have ever made!", and it was. She said it was because of my homemade vanilla she used in it!
