Can We Talk About Flies?

Admist all this rain, we had one (one!) sunny day. Could you believe the California flies had the audacity to show up on our one sunny day? I mean, the nerve…

Can we talk about flies?

I've been researching the homemade fly repellant recipes. Does any one have a good homemade fly 'be gone' recipe they'd be willing to share with me?

I need a recipe that is safe for both horses and goats.

Thanks and happy farming!

Do you want fly repellent or fly killer? And is it for you personally, for your house, or for your beasts?

If you scroll down in this link, you'll find fly repellents.

In return, do you know of an excellent snow repellent?   Laugh

Hi Maud!

Thanks for the great link… I did take a peak at the Shaklee product… I don't know if I'm alone in this, but there's just something about spraying a household cleaner on my animals that doesn't sound right to me (I've read recipes w/dishwashing soap, Pinesol, etc.).

I've been tagging the recipes w/the essential oils (normally mixed w/vinegar). I was really hoping to come across someone who has tried these…

Guess the experiments will begin… My list of titles has just increased by one: Cat Lady, Funny Farmer, One Who Shreeks at Lizards, and now… Mad Scientist!

Thanks again, Maud. You're awesome!

Happy farming,

Kelly

I've had a look on a UK site for you.

If it's got tyres or testicles it's trouble.

Here is another link, Mrs. C.

Good luck with your fly covered beasties!

Found a few homemade animal (horses in this case) fly repellant in this site:  http://www.moniteausaddleclub&…..ecipes.htm

Everyone has a Prince Charming. Mine just took a wrong turn, got lost, and is too stubborn to ask for directions.

I'm taking notes like a crazy woman! Those are really great sites you forwarded… I now have several recipes to experiment with… Do you think my horses will mind? Hee hee…

Actually, I think my goats get worse flies than my horses…

Okay, the "mad scientist" is going to get to work on those recipes!

Thanks!

Happy farming,

Kelly

When I was researching, I found a recipe that we have used, and it works well on our cow. We will try it this spring and summer on our new horse too. You mix it in a spray-type bottle, a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water. More vinegar makes it work even better for those extra pesky days. If you want a bit more staying power, it said to put a tiny bit of dishsoap in as well. You don't want to get it in the animal's eyes, of course. It works, as I had said, but you need to put it on twice through a milking. I think that the flies stayed away more from the milker too.

Vinegar is a great disinfectant, so I figured that that would be a bonus.

I am not sure about how a horse might react to it by their nose. I like it because the sprays that are out there are so harsh and poisonous. This has no bad fumes, so it appealed to us.

Thank you, LK!  I'm going to try this on our donkeys.

Clover made me do it.
