OfflineI am thinking your right…what is the normal age that they start to slow down on laying?
I know that one is around 3 and the other 2 Im not sure. They were full grown when I got them, but then I know that one has never laid an egg for me atleast.

OfflineI know this might sound mean to some but I am going to start fresh this spring…for some reason I have never been able to introduce new girls to the flock, even allowing them to get almost full grown. My head hen is just too mean to them, so all of them are going to freezer camp. I just have to remember that it is a good learning lesson to my dd! Hopefully I wont cry when I have to do it..haha.

OfflineAt three they've definitely slown down a LOT, to the point of one or two eggs a week, by four, maybe not even that. keep mine till about 2.5, though just now I have some older than that. It's harder to mix in new hens in a very small flock. With something 10 or more, they seem to make little alliances where they find a niche easier, with just 3 or 4, they have no where to hide really.

OfflineLOL!!! Little cliques… LOL!!! And who would believe all the strange sounds that chickens can make when they gossip. Movie makers should tape that for monster sounds.
Yesterday and today the mixed up crazy sheep dog helped me herd chickens back into the pen. Really, all he did was literally sit in front of the open door and let themjump over him. Of course, did not have camera in pocket. He was supervising.
Mine are laying like crazy, too! Big girls (8 girls, various breeds) have each layed a big brown egg each day all week. Somehow… three other Bigs turned out to be roosters, who are just about half grown, and I have a 2 year old huge roo already.
I guess the young boys will go to the Feed Store to let the guy there sell them. I butchered a lot of meat in younger days, but it is just not something I want to do any more.
They are just gorgeous, red and shiny with green lights where the sun hits the black feathers on the tail. They should have a harem and strut around instead of becoming chicken fajitas.
And the banties!! Eggs on the ground, eggs in the straw UNDER the nest box, eggs in both egg boxes. Three tiny tiny roosters and I don't even know how many hens. A friend calls these diet eggs, and actually sells banty eggs as "diet eggs." They make wonderful one bite pickled eggs. The roos are all duckwings, a black and white, a partridge pattern in gold, and a blackbreasted English red.
AND… one more and… mama pijjie is about to hatch two more babies! Spring is definitely popping.
