As far as feed goes, we feed our Jersey fresh barley chop. We grind it with a manual corn mill that we have mounted in the barn. We have been told that it is a very hot feed, but if we give her anything else, she doesn't give a really large amount of cream, and it isn't as thick. That is what she got at the dairy that we got her from too. We give her approximately a gallon ice-cream pail full at each milking (once a day). If we are milking twice a day, she gets a bit more.

It would be good to ask what feed she is used to while milking. Some handle change okay (our present one is okay with it, it just affects her cream), and some like our first one will refuse to eat anything else. She hated the thought of oats so much once (after refusing it or even a mix for a few days), that she wouldn't give all her milk, and she escaped as soon as she found a way out. She ran crazy in the field in front of our house back and forth for maybe five minutes, then took off for the neighbors' who live a couple miles away. Needless to say, she was halter broke on the way back given the 2 mile walk, and surprisingly enough she led very, very well! She was always a crazy one. Talk about "mad cow". ;) We have a lot of very unique stories about our adventures with her.
