OfflineAll of a sudden, the eggs are turning very light, not the usual tan. So light they are almost white. and production has dropped remarkabley so. I thought that it had to do with the hens being on different food at the fair, but now all of them are lighter color.
Is this my cue that the light is not enough? I have a solar light, ready to install, but I thought it would be needed a bit later in the year.

Well there is definitely a situation--They have stopped laying altogether. I have the light kit, but the 'honeydew' list is very long. I poked and prodded him with they might not lay again til spring if they don't have light. I was hoping to not have to use the light until at least october! ![]()

Monica, you might want to check out this website. I'll bet you can find the answer to any chicken question you might have.
As to whether you need more light to keep chickens laying? My guess is that they are molting. They lose some of their feathers (though not all at the same time) and while they are molting they generally will not lay. Additional light in the winter is only necessary when your days are extremely short. Many breeds keep laying right through winter whether or not they get supplemental lighting. Unless you are in Alaska, that won't happen in the next month or two.

OfflineThanks everyone for your help!
I religiously change the water and scrub out the slimy film that develops. I soak the waterer in salt water about once a week. I feed Dumor 16%layer crumbles, grit and oyster shell is mixed in with the feed. I buy dried beans and peas to give them a treat mixed in their food. I give them all the scraps from the kitchen and when there is veggies that are pulled up because they are done, I give it to them. I pick them grass, (by hand–I have only mowed 4 times this year–YIPPEE!!).
I also have noticed that there is one with bloody poop. I waited a little longer this morning to give them their water and mixed in some tetracycline hydrochloride antibiotic. The guy at TSC told me that since this is so sudden with the bloody poop, it is probably a bacterial infection. They don't appear sick and I can't tell which one is sick to separate her from the others.
