We at Golden Bucket Farm are heartsick to report that our lovely 4 yr old Jersey milkcow Minnie died this morning. She was fine at chores last night, went out to graze, slept in her pasture shed, went out to graze this AM, and was found dead at milking time.

Vet has been here. Could not find anything obvious. We have regular health checks on all our stock. All we can figure is that it was bloat. She was milking 70+ pounds a day and was the center of our little operation. She calved for the 3rd time about 6 weeks ago and was due to be bred back on her next heat.

We take comfort in the fact that we loved and cared for her the best we could while she was with us. Life and death are part of farming. MinnieCow will be missed.

No only sad news but a very real financial loss. She was in her prime in every way.

Thanks for the sympathy, hugs, and kind thoughts. We are thankful she was not bred back yet so as to have lost a calf too. We are so careful and try to do everything right with our stock. I hope my sharing this does not discourage any of you from taking the plunge into getting a family cow or other livestock. We truly enjoyed every minute we spent with our Minnie.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  For many, this is the difficult part of agriculture.  You do everything in your power to do things "right," and take the best care of your livestock that you can, and things still happen inexplicably.  Please try not to take it too much to heart, you did everything in your power & knowledge.  If even the vet can't figure it out, how could you have?  *hugs*

Wearing cowboy boots does not make one an agriculturist….Having at least 3 varieties of poop on them does.

Oh,Flatlander…my heart breaks for you too. You know I know exactly how you feel. DH had to go to town and get milk replacer which I am sure does not taste like the good milk the calves are used to. The barn cats are wondering why their milk pan is empty. I washed our milk pitchers and put them away for now. We had just started improvements in our little milk parlor. That is on hold now. We are not sure what we are going to do. How are things going at your place?

Thanks to all the kind words and thoughts from our CITR friends :)

What we used to call milk fever can put a newly freshened cow down very quickly. I don't know for certain but I think it is an electrolyte imbalance. We lost two or three during the years that we kept cows but our herd was about six most of the time.

Very sad…I hope you find out what was wrong.

A local farmer lost 6 cows (beef cattle) the other day. I guess they got a disease that a certain type of fly carries. Usually it isn't that bad on cows as long as they are getting enough minerals…he had stopped his minerals because of the extreme high cost. …his son who lives close continued to feed minerals and he didn't have any losses.

My son says that's one of the reasons he doesn't have a milk cow…he's afraid that he would invest in one and then something would happen to it ( since he isn't very knowledgeable about cows). I told him there's always that chance no matter how much you know about animals.

I hate to hear about your loss.

I hope our recent experiences do not make people not want to get a family cow. In all our years of dairying-lots of them as a commercial dairy and now with our family cows- we have only lost 2 cows, so it does not happen very often. One of our cows lived to be over 18 yrs old.  The benefits and joys far outweigh any downsides.
