OfflineAnd yes, we had a mysterious injury. Dh and I went out of town for a few days, leaving the teens at home to hold down the fort. One of my driving ponies, Fable, was fine the day before we got back and crippled the day we arrived home.
She had a puncture wound on her back leg right above the hoof, and serious tendon damage. Her foot was just dangling, it was awful to see. I thought we should put her down immediately but dh and the vet convinced me to try. Long story short, nine months later, a special high heel for ponies and lots of work and therapy and she is back pulling her cart and wagon.
We never could figure out what happened.

Remudamom, glad you were able to save her! It's so awful to come home and find one of the horses hurt, especially when you have no idea how it happened.
The vet was out on Friday again and is convinced because of the way the wounds are healing (slowly) it was a canine. Could be dog or coyote. Gabe is much better and I actually rode him on a 4-H trail ride yesterday afternoon. Tate's split lip had to be repaired so he now sports 4 stitches which will come out around Thanksgiving. No riding for him until then. I have the bb gun in the barn and I'll gladly use it on any stray dog types I see around. DH is talking about a webcam so we can keep an eye on things out there.

OfflineWell, after months of trying to save my horses eye, I dumped the vet and took her to the U of I. They tried to help me, but it was too late and we had to have her eye removed. I was devistated. Needless to say we have a new vet now and she is doing as well as we can hope for. They say she will adapt, but it just breaks my heart. Then on the day we took her bandages off, three of our other horses got out, once we got them caught, as I was walking Buck past our tractor that had the hay fork on the back of it, he swung around and punctured his hip on the point of the fork. It made a deep puncture wound and tore an 8" X 8" L shaped flap of skin on his hip. We were in shock. The new vet came out right away and got him stitched up, but part of the skin has died and came off. It looks terrible, but is actually doing pretty well. I guess I'll be doctoring horses for awhile, but am thankful they are on the mend. JerseyMom, I hope your boys are healed up. Did you find out what caused their injuries?
MMT & Jersey,
I'm so sorry to hear about your equine illnesses, I hope they have speedy recoveries. I know it's hard to watch them go through the injuries and illnesses.
My gelding is in congestive heart failure, so I too am donning my nurse hat to keep him as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.
@MMT, I’ve known a few horses that have lost an eye, and they all seem to adapt perfectly. Most if them were lesson horses and still did great in group outing on the trails. They are such amazing animals.
