Someone asked for this the other day…found it!
Solution for Hummingbird Feeders
1 part sugar
4 parts water
Bring to a boil and cool before filling. I keep the extra in the refrigerator.
DO clean feeder every 2 to 3 days (fermented solutions harm hummingbirds).
DON'T use honey or artificial sweeteners.
DON'T use red dye in mixture.
DON'T place feeder in direct sunlight when temperatures are high.
DON'T allow solution to freeze solid in bottle.
DON'T use pesticides around your feeder.

We had lots of hummingbirds when liiving in the South. In the beginning, I used a little heavier on the sugar ratio, to attract them. But, that home made solution works well!
Also, if you have an electric garage door, beware that the red emergency cord can attract them into your garage.

I'm in NE Ohio and put my hummingbird feeders out the end of April. The little scouts are looking around that time. It says the hummers come back to the same feeders every year if you treat them good.
Yes, it's 4 cups water and 1 cup sugar. Heat to just a boil, remove from heat and let cool. Store extra in fridge.

I use a recipe that I saw online, to boil for three or four minutes. I make mine with 1/2c sugar and 2c of water because i have one glass feeder. I wait until the end of march here in NC. to put my feeder up. I'm anxious to see them again. Last year I just saw females coming to eat.

I live in mid Illinois and usually start seeing hummies around the last week in April or first week of May. I get alot of hummies. I put out 10 feeders last year and sometimes get 40-50 maybe more at peak feeding time just before dark. I use alot of sugar, but I just love them. I have friends and family that come out in the evenings to sit and watch them fight and feed. They are mean little buggers. I had trouble with them getting caught up in our barn and garage sometimes, but learned that if you hang a feeder in the open door, they will go down to it and find their way out. I still have trouble with them running into the sliding glass door sometimes. I put some decals on them and they don't run into it as often. If I can get to them in time I can scoop them up and take them to the feeder and dip their beek til they get enough sugar for energy and get their poor little rattled brain settled and they will fly right out of my hand. They are so beautiful. Can't wait to see them this year.

I have had them come get me when I'm outside & the feeder is empty. They'll dive bomb you, fly over to the feeder, & come back to get you again. Smart little buggers know I'm the one that fills the feeder.

I envy those of you who get to feed them all season. Here in the city we usually only get them to our feeder during the fall migration. One of the "experts" who spoke at the horticulture society meeting said that this is because they prefer to nest in more rural/wooded areas. Yet another reason for me to get out of the city.
One year, as I was carefully taking the filled feeder back outside, out of the corner of my eye I saw something flying at me. I stood still, and a hummer came flying to the feeder and drank while I held it. He would drink a little, hover and look at me, and drink some more. Finally, he flew off and I was able to hang the feeder. Now, I can see them sitting on a dead twiggy branch in the oak, waiting for me to bring the freshly filled feeder to them. If I am a little late, they sure do sqeak at me while I'm getting it hung. Have never had another one drink while I'm carrying it tho'.

I live in Central VA and try to put my feeder up the first of April…a little late this year though, just put it up yesterday…haven't seen any scouts yet. It's supposed to be 80 here tomorrow (ugh, too hot for April…) so maybe we'll see one then…

Be careful to not increase the sugar amount as it will damage their liver. We sure don't want to harm them while feeding.

Hey Kentuckyfarmgirl, you should see the Purple Martins here in Lexington, SC. One of the islands at Lake Murray is one of their biggest roosting spots here in the US. Thousands of them flying around. It sure is an awesome sight to behold.

If you have your feeder on a pole & you get ants….a little coat of vaseline down low on the pole will stop them. Needs to be low so the hummers don't get their wings in it. I spread mine about 1" up the pole.

It always amazed me how mean those lil boogers can be. There is always one that trys to dominate the food, and does not want to share. lol I guess it's like people now that I think about it.
