Looking for a source for pre-mixed chicken feed (and starter feed) for laying hens that does not contain the following:

-GMO Ingredients

-Soy Beans

-Chicken Parts

-Chemical/petrolium-based vitamins/minerals

Anyone have any great sources?

I've found plenty of articles on what to mix yourself, but was hoping to find something ready-mix in "backyard quantities".  I don't really want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to!!!  Is there any such thing out there somewhere?

Have you asked at your farm and feed store?  That would be the first place to start.  Even if they don't sell it they may know of someone who does.

I can't afford organic feed, but I do get local feed.

My main concern in no GMO in the mix.  If I could find something that clearly states it doesn't use GMO in the feed, it doesn't have to be organic!  My plan is to have them pastured but need to have free choice back-up so I'm hoping to find something that's good for them!

I'd love it if someone local can provide non-GMO…I'll have to give them a call and check.  We also have a large Amish population in the area that may have some leads for me.

This is also an important requirement for us as well. We had to go to organic layer mash from the feed store…Nature's Best.  Only organic has no GMO or soybeans and so on.  Unfortunately it costs about twice what normal layer mash costs, but I make sure that it is in the budget.  When it means something to  you…you find a way! :)

Thanks, Birdi.  I did call a local feed store that formulates their own and can make it however I want it.  But…I have to order a minimum of 300 lbs!!!!!  I'll check out the nature's best to see who has it in my area.

I found a wonderful place somewhat near our area that will formulate feed – organic or non-GMO – any way I want it.  Was able to order non-soy and still meet protein levels, etc.

http://honeyvillefeedandfarm.com/

Prices are very good and no shipping costs since I can pick up locally.

Did have to order minimum 300 lbs, but I put out a notice on organic chickens group http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/OrganicChickens/

and found a couple of folks that wanted to share.
