If it helps any, several years ago I went to the hen house to get eggs—after dark. There was a door to the nest boxes that opened from the outside. I reached in to check for eggs, and felt something that wasn't a chicken. Shined a flashlight in the box from inside the coop. Big possum. Poked it with a tomato stake. It did what yours did—-hissed and growled. I went back to the house—-without the eggs.

I was washing dishes…and felt like someone was watching me.  I looked up, and there was a possum staring steadily at me…their faces are so haunting.  Note – I did not say "hauntingly beautiful".  It startled me!

I did rescue a baby out of the pool one day.  Fed it dog food…it lived…and visits regularly.  I put apples out for it.

YIKES!!  I almost screamed at the screen.  Was his head spinning like the Exorcist? You can set a hav-a-heart trap for those, but I have a hard time turning it losse on someone else property then..

My budget plan is NOT getting a cart when I go to the store.

I used to have a Opossum visitor that would eat with my cats on my front porch, also had a very demanding raccoon, who decided that I was her primary food source as well.

Thankfully the Opossum never hung around when it saw me coming, but the raccoon was the complete opposite. She would just give me this look like… "Woman! Where is my food! I will wait right here on this porch, and you can go in and get it for me! Chop chop!"

But thankfully the Opossum didn't cause too much of a ruckus. I know they can get nasty when provoked.

CryYall, please, please, please stop thinking of possums and raccoons as "visitors". Raccoons can become very vicious to you or especially your pets. I've had 3 dogs over the years stitched up from coon attacks, and one nearly died from the bacteria infection the coon's bites gave her. And possums eat dead animals, do you really want things that carry leprosy, rabies, and a few things I can't pronounce around your home? Possums make that mouse yall were talking about seem hygienic. And don't think they can't be mean either. They don't always curl up and play dead. This isn't a baby rabbit or a little bird from a nest, these are vermin. Next time you see your vet, ask him what he thinks. You'll be shocked at all the things he can tell you. Please think twice about handling or feeding these things. Please.

To bite me, any wild animal must get within range to do so.  That ain't happening!  That said, I will rescue anything from harm's way, if it is at all feasible to do so.  But handle a wild animal?  No way.

The raccoons and opossums in my neighborhood are failrly tame.  So far, only one has showed any aggressive tendancies, and it mysteriously disappeared.  Yes, they come up on the porch at night, but leave when the light is turned on.  We also tie our garbage cans shut to keep them out.

We live in the woods!  There are critters in the woods!  Duh!  If given their space, they seem to have no problem giving me mine.  I can't blame one trying to protect it's turf when startled.  So, I just learn their habits and adapt to them in order to avoid problems with them.

You know that skunks also like to eat cat food. So your all fortunate that it has just been raccoons and opossums and no skunks.LOL

So true, Linda!  Don't know why there aren't more of them around here.  Everything else makes an appearance eventually, but I'm not complaining…   Cool   (Watch a skunk show up this afternoon!)

We shouldn't have been talking about the critters. I had a skunk here at the house the other day. My neighbors beautiful golden retreiver chased it under the house. Yes, it sprayed. Now ever time the hvac kicks on, I smell the skunk. Not terrible, I went out and sprayed tomato juice all over right after it happened. Has this happened to any of you? Suggestions are appreciated.

Pete, aren't you lucky that you're animals are so peaceful? I've been "in the sticks" for over 30 years now and while I love the wildlife, birds, squirrels, deer, I do take more caution than you do. By the way, I wasn't suggesting in anyway shape or form that you were stupid. Just alerting folks to the possible harm to their pets from possums and coons.

I saw the neatest saying the other day, if anyone could help me with the author, or the correct wording, I would be grateful. It goes something like "a fact that goes unheeded is still a fact". Thanks everyone.

I don't live in the "sticks", just on the outskirts of town, and I was rather taken aback by the big black bear that greeted me in the yard this morning.  I think he was the same one I saw last week running into the park at the end of the road.  I had called conservation about him ….. wonder if he has come back or if he is the same one.

Kathy, you don't mean this quote do you?

Denying a fact is the easiest thing in the world. Many people do it, but the fact is still a fact. (Isaac Asimov)

When I lived in the mountains and skunks liked to have babies under our house and sometimes died there, we got something called Neutroleum Alpha or something like that from our local extension office.  It worked pretty well but has a unique, though not bad, odor all its own.

I'm told bleach or hydrogen peroxide work, but of course you wouldn't want to mix those.

Dawn dishsoap is supposed to work on skunk smell, it neutralizes it.  My sister, after being sprayed by one that she was trying to get away from her chickens, used it and swears by it — washed her body, hair, clothes, everything in it.  Is there a way under your house without crawling on your stomach?  I would get a weed sprayer and dilute the dishsoap down enough so it flows through the nozzle easy enough and SPRAY everywhere!!!!!

Yep, Shells!  A bear in the yard certainly will get your attention!  We know there are some in our woods, but so far we have only seen casual evidence of their prescence.  I hope to never meet one face to face, or at least be able to run faster than whoever is with me…

Yes, that's the saying! Thank you so much, I've looked everywhere I could think of.

Thanks too for the info about the skunk smell. Yes, I can get partially underneath the house on the back side where the yard slopes away. I have one of those plastic zip suits and a shower cap and a great sprayer. The Dawn dishwashing liquid makes sense doesn't it? That's what they use when washing wildlife caught in an oil spill. I will call the extension office tomorrow and inquire about the Neutroleum stuff. At this point, I am determined as we have a cool front coming in tonight and tomorrow when the heater kicks on, well, let's just say I don't think heat will improve anything.

And as far as bear, holly smokes Shell! I worked one summer in Yellowstone and the rangers always used to refer to black bears as the "small" bears". That applies until you're standing 20' from them. Which I did on a hiking trail. I will readily admit that's the most afraid I've ever been. If they're small, I never want to see a grizzly.

Will let yall know how the spraying for the skunk goes. Have a good weekend.

Shells that was a regular occurance for us in Revelstoke BC when fall hit. We had fruit trees so the bears would come around and test them for weeks before the fruit started to ripen. We had a mother and a cub on the back porch one evening…she even stood up and put her feet on the glass window to the dining room! Good thing she never pushed!!! I know bears are creatures of habit so if he/she found food somewhere around your neighbourhood he'll keep coming back until the food disappears. As for you…you're lucky you don't see any cougar around where you live. I know they're pretty bad on the island. Please be careful.
