We've talked of getting a dairy cow for about a year now and I'm finally getting one! I sent the check off a few days ago and will be bringing her home by the end of the month, just in time for my birthday! Hehe, you should see the crazy looks I get when I tell some people that I'll be getting a cow for my birthday.
Can you direct me to books/websites/other resources of good recipes/tips for all manner of homemade dairy products? With 3 growing boys we'll be eating up plenty of everything (they are most excited about never ending ice cream).
I am a total newbie when it comes to milking, other than I milked goats for a summer 12 years ago, by hand, and that's what I plan to do for a while until we find a milk machine. Perhaps for Christmas!
I'm so excited!

OfflinePictures will up when we bring her home. She is already named Sunshine Belle (why do milk cows have two names, I've noticed?) and I like it so I don't think I'll change it. She doesn't come with a calf, but she has been AI'd (artificially inseminated) with presorted semen, a 75% chance of a Jersey heifer calf if she took. We have beef style bulls (herferd, angus, charlette) in abundance in this area, so if she didn't take getting her bred won't be a problem.
Thankx Leah's Mom, I'll check out the farmbell recipes.
I dreamed of her last night!! And milking, and making ice cream (that's what I get for looking at ice cream recipes before bed, hehe)

OfflineYou are soooooo going to love this, but there will be days/times that you wonder where you have gotten yourselves into.
It was quite shocking for me to find out that a cow is not a goat…and my girl just freshened when I got her and I had to milk 2.5 gallon in the morning and the same in the afternoon.
It took a bit of practice before I was able to milk her out in 20 minutes LOL
The amount of milk can be overwhelming, but just keep in mind if you can't use it all, chickens will love it, so did our pig and wow what a lovely bacon (and more) did we get from him.
Just take one day at the time…enjoy and yes a milking machine is super, I will get one this winter…well I already have it, but not hooked up yet, hubby wants to make it so that the pomp is in the tack-room and the hoses go to the milk parlor…(or something like that, as long as he knows what he is doing…I'm fine with it )
But if you are able to teach yourself to milk by hand, you always have yourself as a back up in case of power failure or whatever reason there can be or a failing milk machine.
Please don't forget to post pictures.
I am so jealous! Lucky you!
I told hubby recently that I want a miniature jersey cow… first he looked at me like I was nuts, but now I think he might actually be considering it! Maybe one day I'll post that I got a cow for my birthday too!! Congratulations and enjoy your cow and all the wonderful milk and yummy stuff that you can make with the milk!

OfflineHey, guess what, me too! I get to bring home a mini jersey gal sometime in October/November!! Woot! I don't have her picked out yet. So, if anyone knows of a mini jersey cow or heifer for sale in MI, it would be great to know. Congrats on the cow that you're getting, too, AliciaN! My birthday is in October, so I guess I'm getting a cow for MY birthday, too!

Ok, I know they have mini cows, never thought about mini DAIRY cows
! how big of an area do they require? How big do they get ? Inquiring minds need to know….. oh my husband is so going to hate I found this out
But then again, he is a big time cheese lover so there could be a bribe in this for him.
Awesome Chickenherd! Birthday cows, how fun!!
flatlander, my husband has been asking if I was "sure I wanted to be married to a cow too." He grew up with a cow on the ranch and has fond memories of Swiss Miss, although he didn't have any milking chores.
We've already got people interested in milk and cream. Leppy calves are available every calving season. There's livestock auctions on a regular basis 2 1/2 hours from us either east or west and I've heard you can pick up piglets there for a good price. Not so sure I'm ready to add pigs tho…I have no experience with them either!
It's getting closer…about a week and we'll be picking her up.

"Mother Earth News" has a wonderful article regarding miniature dairy cows… from what is said in the article 1/2 to 1 acre is needed per cow, preferably divided into separate pastures for rotating.

OfflineI am soooo envious! I have been looking at the miniature jerseys for several years, but I am an older disabled female, living and farmsteading alone. I could never use up all the milk even a miniature produces, and I am not physically able to milk twice a day, every day. I grew up on a farm, and oh how I love homemade cheeses, butter and especially the fresh buttermilk and the homemade "dry" cottage cheese my mother used to make.
sigh…
