Wyandotte question

Hi,

I am new to Chickens in the Road, and pretty new to chickens also.  Grew up on a farm, a few decades ago, like, five.  Now live in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virgina, that would be about 15 miles west of Martinsburg in beautiful Back Creek Valley.  Have 27 ladies laying beautiful eggs since November, got as chicks from McMurray.  Core group are Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks that my friend and co-chicken tender Larry has good experience with, but also have 6 Wyandottes, 4 "Easter Egg" Ameracaunas, and 4 Anconas.

Here's my question.  Someone is laying light brown eggs consistently on the ground.  And we are now getting one at least pecked and, gulp, probably one eaten, a week.  Need to nip this in the bud.  We are suspecting the Wyandottes since we see them hunkering down more often in area of ground egg.  Does anyone have any input on this?

Thanks, Sandy

Welcome Sandy! (sthomas) We're happy to have you here and hope you enjoy visiting here with us!

I can't say for sure which of your girls might be laying outdoors or eating eggs, Wyandottes are one of my favorite breeds and something I considered getting more of before I chose to go with mostly Buckeyes… They're usually easy to get along with and very mellow, not big egg eaters, but that's not saying they can't be!  I've found most egg eaters are either the most aggressive hens, or the most nervous and picked upon ones.  Again, that's not hard and fast!

All i can suggest is that you sit back and watch them some time, take your coffee or tea out on a fairly nice day and watch some "chicken TV" for a while.  That's good advice anyway so you can see what's going on with the girls.  Plus it's very relaxing!  laugh

Thanks for the reply.  Yeah, it's not a precise science, which is why I enjoy chickens.  You're right, I need to just hang out some more with them.  I think when the weather is better, and they can enjoy more time outside, likely the problem may diminish.  Thanks.

I have had wyndottes for about 2 years. They do lay a lighter brown egg.  Our wyndottes are the most agressive bird in our flock. Although they lay fairly consistent, they are not the family favorite. We recently down sized our flock. We had 40+ birds and gave a neighbor 10 of our birds. 7 out of the 10 were the wyndottes. They definately are a beautiful bird, but like I said, seem to be more agressive.
