Shimmy I have just come across a song called “A Country Boy can Survive”.Which mentions West Virginia.Replace Boy with Girl, and you have got yourself a theme song.

Check out "Almost Heaven, West Virginia" , Chris. First one was by John Denver – hundreds of others have done versions of it since.

LOL!

Well, do you want me to try to fix it again or do you want to just stick with the new registration?  Hopefully, nothing weird will happen again.

Suzanne, I saw on one of your older blogs your cousin selling freshly ground corn meal. Your posted pictures were the first time I have ever seen freshly ground corn meal (we get ours here in the poorly colored box – often the meal tastes similar to the box itself).

Does your cousin sell his cornmeal online?

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to order some…

Happy farming!

Hey, Kelly!  No, he doesn't sell it anywhere but locally at art and craft fairs and festivals.  You should be able to find some fresh cornmeal (which is wonderful!) somewhere locally via a farmers market or natural/whole foods store.

Hi Suzanne. I was wondering how you keep your dog from chasing your chickens. I have a bunch of free range chickens that I love and my hubby wants to get a dog.Can the two go together or are we asking for death and destruction unless we pen the girls up all the time?

Our dogs have worked out well with our chickens.  Though in the beginning, when we first started free-ranging the chickens, we had to watch them closely.  It really depends on your dog's personality.  Assuming you're getting a puppy, expose him to the chickens at first where the chickens are protected.  Like let the puppy see them in the chicken yard.  After a few days or a week, then let the chickens out and take the puppy around the chickens while you supervise–maybe on a leash.  Once the puppy is used to them walking around, he'll probably pay no attention to them.  That's the process I used on our dogs and chickens.  There is the occasional bit of excitement and one of the dogs will chase them just for fun, but not too much and they haven't ever hurt any of them.  Same as with the cats and the dogs.  If you start with a puppy, the dog will always be used to having chickens around.

Hope you don't mind if I add something to this…

Beside training them as Suzanne explaines, also look into the breed of dog you are getting, if you say buy a Jack Russell..or a Retriever or any kind of dog used for (duck)hunting, you might get in trouble.(

I'm the owner of a Jack Russell and a Retriever and that is why my chickens are in a 1500sq ft run, so the dogs can't get to them.

Because they will..no matter what I do.

Yes, breed is very important to think of – as well as age.  Rescuing is great, but if the dog has a history of herding or chasing or killing moving objects its going to be VERY challenging.

Google 'livestock dogs' and see what all comes up -there are many – hardly any as cute as Giant Puppy but…

Early exposure while you are there to supervise – long lines are good for that  – is good.   Keep a whistle or some kind of noisemaker handy too – to startle them into attention if they get that glazy 'prey!' loook  in their eyes…'focus on me, baby dog!  Silly thing you are!'

tie the leash to your belt loop while you are doing chores – the calmer and more matter of fact you are around the other animals – the calmer doggy will be also.  let dog sniff around and check things out,  but you have that security of knowing you are in control.

So fun!  let us know what you get – and while I'm not Suzanne – I train 40 hours a week – so will be glad to help breed info or training tips.  Smiley Puppy

Hi,

We had two Labs and two beagles along with 24 chickens.  We never had any trouble.  One beagle would chicken bowl every now and then.  She would just get excited and start running and run right through the flock and they would fly and squawk.  Funny sight to see, but no one ever got hurt.  We had the dogs before we got the chickens.  You just have to watch until you see how your dog will react.  Same with the cats, they were here first, ; except for the few drop offs  that show up.  They all run from the chickens. It's like they know they are going to get in trouble if they mess with them.  Good Luck
