Hi, I'm Dianna, 31 and 10 years married. We have a 6 year old daughter. We live in Bakersfield, California in a normal house, mabey well get property when were old and senile (cost is crazy here in CA). We have 2 dogs now (as one got lost on Jan 1,2010.. , no luck finding her!!!!) three cats, one guinnea pig and one hampster. I have just began looking into food storage, canning and hopefully gardening. I am a teacher when I have a job (thanks to state budgets), this year I began teaching 2 months after school started so yippie! I am hoping and praying that I keep my job next year and can be perminant….Only if hired next year with in 2 moths of school begining. I carry a multi-subject credential (k-6 grade), masters degree in education, and finishing up a single subject credential (science/english 7-12 grade) eventually this year. It's a sad world when teachers need another field of work! Anyhow, I love this site and am going to use as much information I can find! Hobbies; I occasionally sew, make bread, watch movies, LOVE books, outdoor things, and hanging with friends.
Anyhow, this is me! HELLO fellow chickens in the road!

Hi, my name is Rose. I'm 53 and live in rural Staffordshire in the UK. I have been married for almost 32 years, and we have one 28 year old daughter. We have a spoilt rotten cat called Sid! We have lived in our home since we got married and it's kinda grown with us.
I am a housewife with iinterests in crafts, gardening, cooking, do-it-yourself, collecting all sorts of things and furniture restoration/upholstery. I try and recycle as many things as possible, and garden with out the use of chemicals.
I found this site from a link someone posted in the UK.
Nice to meet you all.

Hi! My name is Kelly and I live in California. I love this blog – the pictures are just incredible!
I have three children and a wonderful husband. We have a small hobby farm (purchased May 2009) with two horses, three cats, and five pygmy goats. I have no idea what I'm doing – I just "do." I love to garden but am not that good at it.
Nice seeing everyone here!

Hi, I'm Diane. I'm 41, married, homeschooling mom to six (ages almost-one to 16). We live in the wooded hills of southeastern Oklahoma on a couple of dozen acres with hogs, goats, chickens, dogs, and cats galore. We've had sheep a couple of times but, wow, they were just Darwin candidates so we gave up. We're looking for a family milk cow to add to the zoo.
I'm a gardening maniac, going completely nuts in the spring and summer. In fact, GardenWeb is where I first found out about CITR last fall and have been lurking around ever since. Nice to "meet" you all!

Hi there everyone!
My name is Barb, I'm 42, married and have a 22 year old son. I'm also in the Canadian Forces and have just returned from a 10 month tour in Afghanistan so I'm getting back into the home routine. We have four acres in Alberta, Canada and raise King Shepherd dogs (we're expecting a litter any minute now – keeping a close eye on her!)
The military is moving us to Kingston, Ontario this summer and we've already found the perfect farm. I found this site by accident three days ago and have been hooked! I've gone back to the beginning and have been reading all Suzanne's blog posts in order to catch up. I recently read the posts about spinning, has anyone else ever tried spinning dog hair?! I've been teaching myself and using our dogs hair with some success so far, now I just need to learn to knit! The King Shepherds have some Great Pyr in their background so their underhair is perfect.
Anyway, nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to learning so much more from here and hopefully contributing too!!
Take care eh!!

Hi! I'm also a Deb (my generation seems to have an abundance of them.) I live on a 5 acre farm in north central Iowa. Our farmhouse is 108 years old, so we really relate to Suzanne's posts about her farmhouse. We raise trees, kids, chickens, ducks, peacocks and dogs right now. My husband keeps bringing up ideas like raising goats, or llamas, or his latest; water buffalo. In summer I have a big garden and sell baked goods and vegetables at local farmer's markets.
I've lived here for 5 years, but just got remarried last year and my husband and I have many ideas to fix up the place. Orchards, a pond, maybe even a tent bed and breakfast are in the works.

Hello! My name is Jen and I've been reading this blog for years (I just haven't had time to make it to the forums!) I'll be 26 in a few days and I am married with "three" children. My 17 year old brother, my 5 year old, and my 3 year old all live with me. My husband and I are in the process of becoming foster parents as well (just waiting for our license!).
We live in a small college town of 2-4k people in Iowa. Living in town, we are currently not allowed to have chickens, bees, or any other kind of livestock – but I do have angora rabbits. I grow as much of our food as I can and try to live as sustainably as possible (i.e. for food, we eat deer a lot, buy grass-raised beef from a local farmer, and don't get meat products at the grocery store).
I love the idea of small-scale farming and urban ag, and have been reading Suzanne's blog since before she moved into her house/farm! I've been watching my dreams come true for her and it has given me hope that someday I, too, may be able to have my land with my goats and goat cheeses and chickens and eggs (and more!).
I'm so grateful for the wealth of information people have been gathering here and I have been using some of that information in my home, and now I'd like to share some of my tips and tricks too. :)
Thanks for building this community, Suzanne!
Jen R.

Hi, All!!
I was drawn to this site, first by a receipe for cheesecake cookies, and then enticed to join by those great pics and stories of chickens and goats……. reminds me so much of my childhood, growing up on Grandad's farm!!
Me and my 'old Man' (husband), are basically retired to our 'farm' now. We are located in NW Georgia, have lived in this area most of our lives….( yes, we've gathered much moss ). I have a back ground in 'home ec' and art, he was a machinist, till he permanently injured his back at work. Now we garden and otherwise generally 'putter around' a bit.
We presently have a couple of dozen chickens, mostly hens, ( that are laying mountains of eggs, even after slacking a bit when the temps went into the teens for a couple of weeks)… three cats, one grandog (a Boxer mix), and two grown children. (Oh I almost forgot….and my husband's pet tractor, lol!)
We did have horses, but we got too old to ride, they got too old to be ridden. They lived to ripe old ages and are now buried in their favorite sunny spot on the back fence line. The rest of the pasture now belongs to the aforementioned pet tractor, which will be plowing up some of that pasture for more gardening space.
I look forward to gaining some inspiration from you-all…..

Hi all, I just enjoy Suzanne's blog so much that I had to join the forum! I'm 67 and live in a 160 yr. old house. I'd love to have a horse property because I am boarding my 3 horses and it is getting soooo expensive! I have an English Pointer named Rocky and 2 cats, Squeaker and Ellie.

Hello all! I'm very "wet behind the ears" when it comes to posting on forums…my apologies! I was introduced to your wonderful "space" by a truly wonderful woman, whom I've never met; she has been so very kind to me….and I felt it only right to take a peek at the site.
I'm knocking on 30's door; I hit the big 3-0 on February the thirteenth….not a Friday, though I think I might have been born on the day! I am a survivor…I had a brain hemmorhage when I was eighteen and lived, without living like a vegetable! I've spent fifteen of these thirty years with one man…the love of my life. We haven't any living children, yet….I've heard that your thirties are when you begin your family, so who knows….. I do have a wonderful little man who thinks the world of me: A nephew, Isaac. He's my little partner in crime:). His mother is my baby sister, she is ten years younger than me!
I love to crochet and I am self-taught….now to tackle knitting! Really, I'm pretty boring, but I've found life is too short to spend it racing! If anyone has any pointers on how to knit and purl, please offer them to me.
Thanks:)
Hollie

Hi. I am the commentor on "Chickens in the Road" formerly known as Debbie. I wanted a more interesting name so came up with "lavenderblue" for the forums. Wanted something that had to do with herbs, 'cause that's one of my passions. Now that I hear it in my head, it sounds a bit like the name of a stripper. Oh well.
I'm 50-something. Suzanne, what are you doing hanging out with all us old folks? I am married to a great guy who at this age in his life is studying hard to become a teacher. Mid-life crisis, don't ask me! We have two teenagers, a boy who wants to be a rock star or play Irish folk music and a girl who wants to be a lawyer but should really be an event planner, everything is a party.
Not really sure how this forum business works. Is the bio on the register page separate from this? What is with all the name spaces, not sure when to use my real name or my made up one. And I really logged on here to get some suggestions on what to do with yogurt that didn't set up. I think my yogurt incubator is dying. I'd appreciate help with either of these delemmias, meaning either the yogurt question or the how to work the interwebs questions.

Hey you all! I just came across this blog/forum and LOVE it! You all truly speak to my heart. I'm Laurie aka laurieann. I live in a small logging town in NW Oregon with my dh Mike, 17yo dd Bonnie, and our oversized lapdog Duke. I work too much and play too little…this year my goal is to find better balance. Although I have not always lived the life, my heart has always been in the country for as long as I can remember. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you like-minded sisters!

Hi all
I am Kristina mom of 2 boys 10 and 7. I think I am a farmer but unfortunately I live in town and can't even have chickens. I fooled them though I have rabbits and many babies, a dog, fish, and a bird. I have maxed out my yard, garden wise and have moved on to my front yard. My neighbors are all old and just love me. LOL
I do rent land at a local farm so I intend to expand this year. I believe in doing what I can for myself. I am an avid baker and cook and love the science of canning. I look forward to making friends and learning a bunch.

Hey all. My name's Heather, I'm 31, and I live in Aurora, CO. My family owns & operates a working cattle ranch in rural Colorado, and I am there 8-10 times a year helping out. I have a very good working knowledge of horses, cattle, sheep, rabbits, chickens, peacocks, dogs & cats, and several types of local wildlife. The ranch is at a pretty high altitude, so we never were able to do much gardening due to the short growing season, but I'm trying to remedy that deficit now by experimenting in my back yard. I'm teaching myself the ins and outs of container gardening until such a time as I have a better gardening site than where I am now.
I got married about 6 months ago, and I'm trying to impress my hubby with homegrown food, homebaked bread, & I even plan to start canning this year. We prefer to know where our food comes from, and to rely on others for our food as little as possible.
I work full time as a police officer, so my homecrafts are a big source of stress relief & comfort for me. Looking forward to being here!

Hi,
My name is Sandy. I live in W.V., but am from Summerville, S.C.. I have two kids 20 and 23. I have been married 27 years. My parents laugh at me and say they spent years trying to get off the farm and I have spent my time trying to get on it. We have two pygmy goats that think they are dogs, they have such personality. I have a flock of chickens, Buff orpingtons and Americaunas. I get beautiful brown and green eggs from the sweetest girls.
We have apple, plum and peach trees along with blueberries, blackberries, and red raspberries. I hope to plant some yellow raspberries this year. They are so sweet, we have grapes too. I live out, but also close to town. I am truly blessed to have the best of both worlds at my disposal.
I am looking forward to chatting with everyone,
Sandy
