Hi I'm Stephanie and I'm from Spencer, WV.  I post on the blog occasionally but I'm new to the forum.  I am 40 years old, I have 2 teenage boys, Kyle age 17 and Alec age 14.  I am married to the most amazing man on the face of this earth (in my opinion, which is the only one who counts in this matter!) and I have one stepson at home, Lewis age 17, and 2 grown stepchildren, Charlie and Beth Ann.  I am a teacher in a rural community, where I teach reading language arts and writing to middle schoolers.  Occasionally I use Suzanne's blog as a springboard for writing in my classroom.  My students love keeping up with the daily farm activities!  I have a connection to Suzanne's family that I like to brag about… years ago when my son Kyle was only 2 years old, I used to babysit for Suzanne's cousin's son Madison…. Madison is now a senior in high school!  I was even able to spend some time in The Crooked Little House — We called it Granny Ruby's house — and at that time, Ruby was still alive.  I spent many lazy afternoons on the porch of The Crooked Little House talking to Granny Ruby and watching the toddlers play in the yard under the shade of the huge trees!

Hi I am Brandi, I live in Regina, Saskatchewan.  27 years old with a husband, son, and one on the way.  I grew up in a farming town and find it comforting that people still like the country lifestyle.  Both my husband and I miss country lifestyle so much and hope to move to an acreage within about 5 years.

I work from my home as a Remedial Massage Therapist and have recently launched my personnel wellness website.  I post articles on common things that my clients ask me about (http://www.brandiheuchert.com) and am very excited to keep growing the site.

Right now I am gathering all the second hand canning supplies that I can get my hands on so that this fall I can store away the good stuff!  Can't wait for home canned tomatoes, I miss them so much!

Hello all I am a newbie here but this looks like the place to be. I don't live on a farm or in the country. We have lived in two different country style places. I have been married for 46 years and we have a daughter who is 43.  Also a cairn terrier Maggie 11 years old and Pancho our cat who is around 3. He has mitten paws and is the sweetest thing.

I used to can a lot when we had a big garden. Now I like to do little quilts for dolls or wallhangings. I also do thread crochet mostly doilies and pot holders.

I only have tomato plants now in a little patch in the back yard. I would like to have a bigger space but no enough sun back there.

Thanks for having me.shimmy

My name is Angela.  I am 50 years old, but my mind doesn't accept that as truth yet.  I have been married to my best friend for 30 yearssnuggle and we have no children.  I have 2 cats right now, Onslo and Daisypawprint.  Both are spoiled beyond belief.

I am originally from southern AR, but right now I live in nw AR in Fayetteville.  My husband works in computers and his job has taken us to live in Dallas TX, Savannah GA, Charlotte NC, and now back to AR.  We are just waiting for this contract to end and we intend to head back east. happy-feet

I love crafts, cooking, Nascar (hence the sign-in Junebug)(other Nascar nuts will know who that is).  I live in a hotel right now, but when we move I intend to do all of my crafting and canning and preserving and drying and just basically try the frugal life.  I am fed up with prices and the quality you have to take at such terrible prices.  I like to make candles, garden, cross-stitch, embroider, reading is my major habit.  I usually have 4-5 books all going at the same time.  We love to travel and take photographs.happy-flower

I completely love this website and visit it daily, sometimes more than once per day if I am feeling down.  It makes me feel happy and brings a feeling of contentment.  Suzanne is living my life for me right now, but she has to give it back when I am better prepared to take hold of it.  I would love to talk to any of you folks.  I do not work right now and being alone gets awfully boring.  I have been reading this website for well over a year now, but just never worked up the courage to come out in the open.  I don't know why.  Anyway, would love to talk to any of you nice folks about anything you like to do, anything I like to do, just anything basically.  Look forward to hearing from others like myself.  Sorry for rambling, I just get excited thinking there may be others out there like me that I can communicate with. shimmy

I'm Patsy, age 56, a lifelong resident of TN except when following the ex-husband who was climbing a corporate ladder.  I'm an accountant, but I hope to change careers in retirement and become a farmer, nurmsery/greenhouse owner and harpist, not necessarily in that order.  I enjoy reading country living blogs and learning the old-timey skills that my grandmothers had and used.

Hi! I'm Crystal, almost 30 yr old mom of two boys ages 11 and 6.

We just moved onto about an acre a little south of Syracuse NY. For the past 6 years or so we've been making slow strides towards a sustainable lifestyle. We make our own wine and beer, I taught myself to sew several years ago, I started making cheese a few months ago, we grow a portion of our own food (now that we have some land, we'll be doing more). I really want chickens. We're really into local food and farms.

Someday I want to stay home with children and chickens and do the full time mom thing for a while. Right now my husband is the at home parent while he finishes his degree for teaching and mathematics. He plays in a bluegrass band too.

I've been a fan of the blog for a while, but haven't checked into the forums yet. A crisis in cream cheese making led me here today, and I'm sure I'll be stopping in more :)

Hi, I'm Johanna.  I live outside of Cincinnati near Kings Island.  I don't remember how I found Suzanne's CITR but I've been hooked ever since and like most of us, I visit every day.  I found CITR earlier this year and since that day have gotten others hooked.  I think I'm driving my associates crazy with the recipes I've found on "Chickens".  Thanks to Suzanne and y'all, I've made a lot of bread, lots of pop tarts, hot pockets, cinnamon rolls, Kahlua, yogurt and cream cheese.  My friend who has a condo nearby has planted a "small" garden in my side yard and I'm looking forward to helping him (if he lets me) can this year.  Unfortunately, I learned that my flattop stove cannot be used for canning, so we'll have to haul the produce to his house to do the work.  He's canned apple butter before and knows how to do it.  The only thing I've "canned" is putting instant powdered pumpking spice coffee mix into pint canning jars…there's no processing.

My first divorce was 10 years ago and I was bulk cooking to save money.  My 3 children were all under the age of 5.  Every Sunday we sat around the kitchen table making our lunches for the week.  I had a loaf of bread for each of us (pbjs and pbs) that I stashed in the freezer to pull quickly for daily lunches.  We also made "emergency breakfasts", which were grab and go baggies of cereal to be eaten at daycare.  My girfriend would make fun of me because she would stop by and find me bulking…standing at my table cutting 10 lbs of potatoes for fries.  One time I even wrapped potatoes, all 10 lbs. of them, and baked them…ran off to a football game with one in each pocket to keep me warm…and then I ate them!

Since the 2nd divorce, "hurricane" and a job loss a few years ago, I started looking into "just add water" food but I didn't want processed chemicals.  I now have beans, Suzanne's long grain and wild rice mix, homemade gatorade, instant pumpkin spice coffee, coffee cake in a mug and anything else y'all want to send my way…I want chickens and a cow but it is just me now and these here city folk don't take kindly to livestock.  I'm just thankful I don't live in an HOA neighborhood or I'd be run out of town!!!

Hello, Hello – My name is Cyndi and I'm new to posting to the forum here.  Though I have been lurking for quite some time around here.  Anyway, here's a little about me…I am a mother to an 11 year old boy – he's quite awesome, especially when he does what he's asked and I have a husband – again, pretty awesome.  I work full time outside the home, but spend most of my time at work daydreaming about one day owning a small sustainable farm…

Gardening – we are taking a year off this year to rebuild a home that my hubby's grandmother used to live in. Gutting it and redoing the entire thing – with the job, I just really couldn't do both.  I did talk to some good friends with gardens and while we'll live off what I canned last year, there are a few needs and they are going to "cover" me.  but next year – watch out – I'm already planning that baby!

Cooking and Canning – used to love it, then didn't, now I do again.  I'm striving to keep us out of restaurants and enjoying food that much at home.  Right now I'm working on breads. I need it to take look and feel like store bought – I have an 11 year old and picky is putting mildly his food issues.  At any rate, I enjoy cooking, canning, and pretty soon steam juicing (my new toy is on it's way to me – Thanks Dad!)

Crafting – it has to be useable. But I do enjoy it.  This year we are moving to a homemade xmas – at least we are going to try. I'm kind of the rebel in my family on this.  They like to buy in the store.  Anyway, we are working on the rest of our family.

I think that's it.

Hi, I'm Ms. Donnie.  Yep..that's my real name!!   I've been reading this wonderful site for over a year…it's almost a daily "meeting"…me, my coffee, and all the goings on at Suzanne's farm.  Love it!

I'll soon be 65 (yeah, Medicare)!!  I semi-retired about 4 years ago and supplement my income by doing transcription work for several TV production companies, via the Internet.  Money is good…but it's sometimes a grueling task meeting deadlines, etc.

After more than 25 years of widowhood, I met a wonderful man about 3 years ago and he has become the "light of my life".    Who would have thought it?   lol

Al loves to garden and is constantly trying to make it bigger and better.  If he keeps up the current pace we will soon run out of back yard!  Hmmm….no mowing…but the garden work is much harder (??)   Check out our garden under the "Share Your Garden" forum.

I gave up canning and preserving years ago..but got back into it last year.  Had to re-learn a lot!!  This year Al will be around to help more and we're looking forward to stocking our pantry with everything from the garden and local farmer's market.   He has high hopes of getting some venison this fall.  Then we'll be busy learning new recipes.  Oh,  I forgot to mention, he loves to cook and actually does most of the cooking around here.

Glad to be part of the group!!  wave

Hello, All!  I've been lurking around for quite some time now too!  Absolutely love Suzanne's blog….really feel like I'm missing something, if I don't check in each day!!!  Anyway, I'm Sandra and I live in upstate SC.  I will be 50 this year….I am married to a wonderful man….he brings me coffee and the newspaper every morning…and I have an awesome 12 year old (soon to be a teenaged) son!  I love to cook….homemade food is the best….and garden…homegrown food is even better.  I used to smock and sew alot and I'm trying to get back into that because I do miss it…..I have lots of boy baby things that I made so I told my son I have to make some girl baby stuff….I may be too old to see how to do it when/if he has children!!!  I am fortunate enough to be able to work part-time so that I can be with my son in the afternoons….and to tend my garden.  I do square foot gardening and for two years now have been amazed at how much I can grow in such a small space.  I would love to post some pictures of my garden….if someone will tell me how to attach the pictures….I see the little picture icon in the task bar above, but it asks for the image url….it doesn't seem to let me browse my pics for one to insert….please help.

Thanks!!!

My name is Kay.  I have been married for 32 years.  I just turned 51. Yikes where has the time gone.  I have 4 children (3 girls and 1 boy), and two cats (Kate – my cat & Charlie – my husband's cat).  My girls are married and my son is 17.   No grandchildren yet.  I work at a technical college in Information Technology/Technical Support.  We just finished our yearly refresh (replacing over 400 systems).

Listening to George Strait's music, baking bread, reading romance/romantic suspense novels, baking bread, and loving on my sweet cat Kate are therapy to me.  I collect cookbooks and go see George Strait at least twice a year.

I enjoy cooking and baking but everyday meals are difficult after a long hard day at work.   I do more cooking on the weekends especially when my girls come home.  I have a sourdough starter so make bread most every week.  I've enjoyed searching and reading this site.  I hope I can get some good ideas on things I can make on the weekends to make the weekday meals easier.

Hey there! I'm Janis, born and raised in West Virginia. I left the state at 18 when I went to college, and returned in 2005. My husband & I live out in the sticks with our golden retriever, chocolate lab, basset hound, two indoor cats (Lily and Joe-Pye), an outdoor cat (Mona), and an African grey parrot who has been on an egg-laying kick this year.

I would love to more sustainably live off the land, but I work full-time and have a long commute, and my husband is in school, that we don't have the time right now. In addition, we may not be at this property in the mid-term; either we want to sell and move a little closer to town (and after the winter we just had, to better-tended roads because my Prius just can't hack the snow), or, we may end up moving away from West Virginia again because my husband can't get a decent-paying job where we are now. hissy-fit

Anyway, I've been lurking a bit on this site, and Suzanne, I just love it! Lots and lots to explore! I look forward to reading all the intros and posting more.

Hi everyone, my name is Shawna. I stumbled across this website
looking for goat info. Looks like it is a great site with lots of
information. I am a nurse by trade, but prefer to be at home with my
husband, 2 boys and all the critters. We have a herd of commercial meat
goats but I also have my dairy girls that I enjoy milking and turning
their "white gold" into cheese, ice cream, fudge and sometimes soap (if
I'm really energetic).

I look forward to talking with you all, learning a lot and offering
whatever I can.

Just when I thought I could not love you more, I discovered vegetarian and vegan recipes! I can "veganize" just about any recipe, but imagine my joy in finding delicious sounding treats that need no changing at all.

Honestly, this site is just a little slice of Heaven, and I'm thrilled to have found you. It's rapidly becoming my go to place when I need a break from the stress and noise of city life.Thank you.

Hi!  My name is Amy and I am 25.  My husband and I moved to Oklahoma last year from my childhood home in Kentucky.  We're both Ph.D. students at Oklahoma State University – he studies Botany and I study Professional Writing.  We have a big garden, chickens, and a love of making whatever we can ourselves.  We like to can, make jam, sew, build things, etc.  I love to try new craft projects and I have always been into the visual arts.

I was really excited to find this website and I look forward to exploring it further.

Hi everyone,

Let's see, I am 41 years old and have lived in GA for the last 19 years, before that I was from NH. I have always been fascinated by the idea of self suffiency. I guess because we were quite self sufficient when I was growing up. So here on our little acre, we have fruit and nut trees, a small garden (need to expand it), chicken and more chickens, quail, ducks and one lonely pheasant, dogs and cats. I have been working full time this summer so haven't gotten nearly as much done as I would like to but this weekend we are putting in a water catchment barrel and hope to be doing a little cheap solar system soon. I love to craft but don't seem to get a lot of time to do it lately. Phil and I have been together 13 years. I have three children Buddy is 22 and in Germany in the Army, John is 19 just went into the Army and broke his ankle on the 3rd day of Basic. They are sending him home next weekend to recover. Michelle is 17 and I am homeschooling her.

I think that is about it. Very interested in trying several things I have seen on the site already.

Becky
