Sorry,  I forgot my manners!   My name is Susan, (screen name - Patchkat).  I'm married, employed outside the home fulltime.  4 Grown and gone from home children, 11 grandchildren, 4 house kitties and 13 outside kitties.   This is known locally as the Burkett Cat Rescue facility.  We purchased our little bit of TX heaven (3 acres) in 2003.  We spent 3 years using this as our vacation home.   We've lived here fulltime since 2006.  We've left the land as it was until 2007.  Since then, DH has cleared, cleaned and leveled parts of the acreage.  We've had gardens every year and now we're ready to branch out into fruit trees.  We're canning, drying and freezing garden goodies.  This has been a major learning experience.  Other than the fact that we're not spring chickens, it's a pleasurable endeavor.   I quilt as much as possible.  Garden, read, bead and scrapbook when I"m not in the kitchen.

Hey to all , my name is Bev and Im a 53yo [wow] young old hippie. I am a mother of 3 grown [sometimes questionable] kids and 7 grands ages 7-17. I live in north MN on a hay farm, moved here from Georgia 3 yrs ago and I love it. I am a burnt out nurse of 25yrs . I don't work off the farm but keep very busy with 3 veggie gardens, one being  raised beds, goats, chickens and working in the fields haying. I love the simpler life, working on being as self-sufficient as possible. I love cooking from scratch [i do at times cheat] baking [which im blaming for this added weight] canning and also any and all crafts. I generally have 4-5 crafts going , bouncing back and forth between them. I attempt to make all my Christmas and Birthday gifts , doesn't always work out that way. Hopefully some day my grands will cherish the love put into these gifts and I will loose the title of cheap Grandma…not sure if that's what they think but I often wonder. I happened upon this site and have been lurking for a bit, I absolutely love it!

Hello!

My name is Gen and I live in florida.  I really don't like it. It's flat and hot.  My goal is to one day move to the Mountians with enough land for a few animals, and a bigger garden.  I have an 8 by 20 garden that I play with while learning.  I have gotten real good with lettuce, tomatoes, and okra, and onions.  I also have a pear tree and blackberry bushes.  Most of the time I just go various farmers markets and get what I need.

I am also learning how to can or preserve as much as posible so we can quality foods year round and not break the bank.  Plus it tastes so much better than the stuff at the store. I do want to say, I made the plain grandmother bread this past weekend and it was gone in nothing flat.  It was so easy and even my picky (about bread) 17 year old ate it up!

It's nice meeting yall.

Hello everyone!  : )

I'm Evelina.  I live just outside of Ocala, Florida.  I'm 52, two darling daughters, 23 and 27, and one darling grandson, 19 months, and the two fantastic men my daughters are blessed with.

I was an Army brat, then a Navy Spouse for 24 years or so.  I finally moved back to Florida leaving the abusive x behind.  (With the Navy's help.)   Live is sweet now.  Yes, it gets tough, but it is EASY compared to what it was.  **shudder**

I have lots of dreams, and lots of hopes.  But, I find that I am living that dream right now – you can't ever go back and reclaim that lost time.  So you make the best of NOW.  I have fibromyalgia and there are lots of things I can't do sometimes – but many things I can do plenty of times!   I'm one of the few lucky ones in that I've had it for so many years, and it crept up on me so slowly – since I was 19, that I have adapted my life style to accommodate without even knowing it!   I have a very understanding man in my life, Charlie – who is the greatest Grandpa my grandson could ever have!  : )

I've always made my own babyfood – so of course that has extended to my grandson.  He simply loves my cooking, and well, that just makes me GLOW!  He sees me standing at the stove and insists that Grandpa pick him up so he can peek into the pots and let grandma give him a taste of what's cooking.  The cutest thing he does now is that when he see me starting to cook or heat up something for him, he gets a big smile on his face, and says,  "Mmmmmmmmmm"!  **laughter**  Of course, my girls constantly raid my pantry, and the first thing they do, especially my youngest, is open the fridge door to see what there is to eat.

I'm learning how to cook all sorts of things, and trying to learn whole grain bread making.  I found this website searching for info about making my own bread booster/enhancer at home.  So, grandmother bread it will be. (I love that tradition!)  I have cooked with whole grains in the past, when my girls were little, but only as far as commissary supplies were available.  It is wonderful now that I can choose from various grocery stores, or even order online!  Wow!  amazon is like my best buddy for hard to find stuff.  : )

I love the feel of this forum, and the website.  Oh, boy, I sure would love to do what you all are doing, and well, Florida is so FLAT!  I miss mountains.  But, luckily Ocala is a little "lumpy" and not quite that flat.  I sure would have loved to live on a farm like my paternal grandparents did.  And the life my maternal grandmother and my grand aunts had – everything made at home – down to growing your own chickens.  I yearn to capture this past and bring it forward and make  food from scratch myself, too.  (Okay, about killing a chicken for dinner – no – too much of a wuz for that…)

Growing my own food is out – I give up between the squirrels and the rabbits.  But, I still try – growing herbs, and currently trying to grow ginger.  Yum!  The point is, I try.  : )  And I'm starting to succeed a little more each time I try again.   My best success to date – rosemary – on it's third year, (after several tries). And a chile bush that lasted two years, (till we had a hard, unusually cold winter, with a deep freezes in between odd overly warm spells that made everything start to bud early this past season).

And I have the smallest kitchen ever, it seems.  But, I love it.  Mainly because it is all mine.  And there are not very many steps between stove, fridge, and sink – which really makes it easy.  Just not enough prep room.  But, I make do.  I keep all my appliances on shelves in the garage, and the majority of my pots and pans and household supplies, (soap, cooking oils, etc.), that can withstand the heat of the garage out there too.  I keep my kitchen envy in check when I see a beautiful big kitchen on TV or in someone's house by just thinking of how hard it must be to keep such a big space clean and neat, (OW that would hurt!) and all that WALKING carrying things to and fro!  **laughter**

I have even more concern about cooking from scratch NOW than ever before.  The amount of HFCS in foods is horrid, and what they do to a body, especially the children of America, is awful!  (You tube's, "Sugar, the Bitter Truth", and "Children of the Corn Syrup" really opened my eyes wider than before).  I've always been into natural, wholesome foods, and meat occassionally.  But, realize I must further control what I use as ingredients.  The realization of what my Grandson is exposed to in his food is frightening.  Especially when his dad and paternal grandparents think too much organic stuff can kill a person. (I haven't figured that out quite yet…won't bother to) They are those type people that soda is more necessary than water, and sugary sweets are okay to feed babies; my ex-sister-in-law was that way too.    I've lived in my own little bubble for so long, I never realized that the majority don't eat healthy, wholesome foods.

I enjoy reading all about your successes and projects.  It is wonderful!  And the cooking – oh my!  I'll be lurking mostly.  Reading and enjoying your posts when I can.  It is such a pleasure to be able to do so.  Please excuse me if I don't post frequently, often coping with the fibro and day to day things gets in the way. But, that doesn't get me down – because I can still READ!  : )

Big HUGS to all!

Evelina : )

Good Morning All– My name is Judy.   I am a nurse in Memphis, but daydream of living the rural life with chickens and goats.  I even have their names picked out, but for now we must live where the work is.  I am married with 6 cats and four nieces,  lots of extended family back home in Alabama.  I enjoy cooking, canning, gardening, and various types of crafts.   Thanks for letting me live vicariously through all of you for now, and you can be sure I'll be learning as much as possible so I'll be ready for the "someday" farm of my daydreams.

I'm Debbie, I live in a small town in central Illinois.  A few years ago, I started to can and have been canning everything I've gotten my hands on since.  New this year, fermenting cucumbers.  I have a small yard but a lot of rural friends so I'm an urban homesteader, I suppose, with resources.  Every year, I'm blessed with more and more.  Raw milk, farm fresh eggs, organic beef and pork.  I'm blessed for sure.  It's awesome to look at your archives and see folks interested in the same things I am!   I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

I finally logged in to the site today! yes   I live in the city as a lot of you have commented.  Looking through this site (or is it a blog?!)  I can't help but smile and break out laughing.  It makes me so happy to see the sheep bouncing around as she chases the little dog.  To see the young lady paint the photos of the donkeys is inspiring.  I love the chickens, cows and garden.  I guess I should say everything about this site is right up my alley.  So I will try to comment in the forum and communicate with those who enjoy the same type of things as myself.  Take care and talk to you soon!!   wave

Greetings from beautiful (and HOT) Iron County, Missouri.  I have a little 2 acre plot high in the Ozarks, with 20 chickens, 3 dogs and a cat.  I love to garden (veggies and posies), cook, swim, and I am an excellent porch sitter.

I have 2 grown boys and one absolutely perfect granddaughter born last October.  I work for U of MO Extension–I do 4-H, but I am also a Master Gardener, and self proclaimed chicken expert for the office.

I just haven't been the same since that house fell on my sister.

Hi, I'm Christy and I LOVE THIS SITE! Since I've been a country girl for 34 years it suits me just fine. Seeing all the knowledge passed between you(us) thrills me. It won't be lost. The fun of trying new ideas and recipes and being reminded of the old ways delights me.

My husband and I have 7 kids, all grown. We have been foster parents here in Va. for 21 years. Retired a few years back from that when hubby retired from truck driving. God blessed us with 104 children coming and going from our home over that time period. The stories I could tell……….

Canning everything is something I've done all the years I've been married. We put out 2 acres of garden and enjoyed the bounty. Now, the two of us just plant a half acre. It's sufficient and so much easier to weed.  :) We go to the eastern shore in July to the potato farms and get their culls for free. That gives us about 150 jars of potatoes. Now, the farms sell their culls to the Vodka makers and we have to buy the fifty pound bags. $6 a bag this year. Not too bad.

Oh, I am a grandma many times over and a great-grandma once. That's enough for now.  It is true that as a grandma you have time to enjoy the small, treasured moments with the kids. Taught them how much fun you could have cooking, we laughed ourselves silly over our mistakes and messes. Lets  do it again, Grandma is the word of the day. I am an avid quilter and seamstress so, natch I have a BIG box of scraps. The fun those kids have with that box astounds me. They played in it one day while I was stitching away on a quilt. Then, I heard them holler for me. When I left the sewing room I was transported into another world, full of color, strings, and amazing shapes. Those darlings had tied or wrapped ALL my scraps around everything in the dining room and living room. They were so proud. So, I guess I had to be too. We ended up having a picnic under this beautiful arbor of colors.

We bought an old farmhouse and rewired and plumbed it ourselves. Rebuilt some floors and laid floors. Then, roofed, windowed, and sided it ourselves. All of this ,of course, with help from family and friends. Too old for that now.

We raised cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, and pigs for years. We got our hay very cheap from our farmer neighbors. God saw to it that we never lacked. No more animals now,my husband says. I miss them though.

Glad to meet all of you here and hope to get to know you better. Christy

Hi everyone. Glad to have found you all.  wave

My grandkids call me Grammy – and while having six children is wonderful – being a grandmother totally rocks! sun2

As a family, we strive to live a simple life – sometimes we succeed, sometimes not. But we try. Since there's always room for improvement/learning – I thought I'd join you all. :)

Getting goats and chickens is top on our list. Been wanting them for years, just haven't actually done it. My simple living consists of sewing, soapmaking and bargain shopping. ;)

Hope to get to know everyone.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

We have 3 acres of land, and even though 2 of the 3 acres is wooded, I figure goats wouldn't mind that and we do have a great spot for both a chicken coop and a barn for goats.  Our property actually backs to a state park and hundreds of wooded acres of land.

As we have a LOT of wildlife where we live, we're looking at a coop with a large covered run. Too many birds of prey, fox, possum, etc…. to risk letting them free range. Even during the day.

Hello everyone, I just subscribed today but I've been lurking for months.  I've gotten some really cool ideas from this site and some great recipes!

I live in Bartlesville, Northeastern Oklahoma.  Hubs and I just moved from our home in nearby Dewey, where I had my entire back yard in raised bed vegetable gardens, to a house that's on the edge of Bartlesville on 1.6 acres.  I'm looking forward to developing gardens here but there's a lot of limestone so there's a challenge for you!  Heh.  At least there will be none of those pesky moles, who certainly took a toll on my garden in town.  I have my fall beans up and growing, some transplanted pepper, pumpkin and tomato plants that are struggling because of the drought, and a few little cabbage seedlings.  That's about all that I can manage, what with moving and all, for now.

I am 63 years old, fat and somewhat crabby at times.  I raised two children and two grandsons.  I have canned, pickled and preserved since my kids were little.  I do genealogy and I am a quilter.  I love to cook and bake.  During my working years I did all kinds of things, from being a secretary for attorneys, financial advisors and at Phillips Petroluem Company (now Conoco/Phillips) to designing billboards for a sign company, to working as office staff at a workshop for the mentally disabled, to being the transcriptionist at an ophthalmology clinic.

If you want to, you can find out more about me on my blog, which is at http://www.visitwithgrandma.blogspot.com .  It's not a money-making thing for me, I just do it because I like to talk.  You'll see what I mean.  Heh.

Anyway, I don't know how prolific I'm going to be, post-wise, but looks like there's a pretty good bunch here!

Thanks, Ilene

Hi everyone, Brenda here from Central Texas.  As my call sign implies my mom (as well as her 5 sisters) was a Home Economics Teacher.  Learned much from her and my aunts.  Mom, two aunts and I would put up a 1/2 acre garden each year filling a cellar and 5 freezers.  I have been out of the canning business since my mom passed away back in 2001, but have found my way back this year and remembering what fun we had and what I was missing.

I love this site and it has rapidly become my favorite blog in the 2 weeks I have been hanging out here.  Already Suzanne has me ordering soap making supplies (just sounds fun) and busy with my crochet hook and threads for dishcloths…having the time of my life.

Hope to get to know each and everyone of you better as time passes.

Hello everyone, My name is Suzy.  I live in rural New York state with
my hubby and a couple cats.  I am 50 something and have 3 grown
children and 8 grandkids who are the loves of my life.  Six  years ago,
after being single for over 20 years, my first love, a boy I met at the
stable where we both worked as teens,  actually knocked on my door after
38 years.  We were married in 2006.  There are 6 kids between us and 14
grandkids.

I live in a renovated 134 year old farm home that had been in my
family many years ago.  We were blessed to be able to move back to our
homestead 30 years ago.  We live on a creek, so there is a lot of
wildlife here.

I love anything to do with nature, baking, sewing (wool felt is a
favorite of mine to work with), gardening and animals. We like to go to
farm auctions in the fall, more for the atmosphere than to buy
anything.

I am a pretty simple gal and love the simple things. I look forward
to meeting others with my outlook on life and living in the country!happy-flower

happy-flowerHey! I finally figured out how to get to this page!!

I recently found this site and I think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread! It has such a homey feel and Suzanne, you have an amazing talent for reeling us in and making us feel like we're right there on the farm. I am really enjoying all the posts. I can't wait to try Grandmother Bread and SOAP!

I am slowly building a farm with the help (sometimes reluctant) of my family. We have 29 laying hens and one lone, rather mean rooster named Russell Crow (he's a scrapper just like the actor) and I am hoping for goats and a milk cow soon. I have a hundred or so blueberry bushes and about fifty young fig trees. Right now I'm growing herbs, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and greens.

I work as a race track photographer and sports correspondent on weekends and my whole family likes to drag race, but I really just want to farm.

I really look forward to getting to know everyone here!

Take care!
