Hi, my name is Elaine.  I've been lurking for several months. I found the site while looking for a recipe for cheddar cheese. I've been making my own bread, canning and preserving fruits and vegetables (the vegetables from my garden; my miniature orchard hasn't amounted to much yet), sewing and crocheting for years, so this is just the kind of information I was looking for.  In the last year I've gotten into making cheese and was amazed at how easy and inexpensive it can be.  While I have no desire to live on a farm (too much work! I'm too lazy!) I love reading Suzanne's wonderful stories and all the forum members' great information as well. Thank you all for sharing your experience.

Hi everyone. I've been watching this site since I found instructions on building a cheese press. So nice to know that there are others trying to live simply and sustainably.  I am a single mom of two, one is 18 at college, one is 10 here with me. We have 10 acres in south central New Mexico. I have regestered LaMancha and MiniMancha Dairy Goats, 30 laying hens, two roosters three cats , two horses and a dog. I like to garden, can, cook and make cheese.

Hello Everyone!  My name is Sherie and we have just moved to the country in Southeast Illinois.  I am 60 – wow!  Four grown children, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grand baby on the way!

I was always a farm girl, but away from the farm for a long, long time.  My husband is a city boy/Air Force brat and knows nothing about farming.  We will be having to HUGE gardens . . . . any ideas?  We put in a few turnips, lettuce and snow peas for a late crop.  I would like to plant something in the biggest garden that maybe I could earn a little cash from (again, any ideas?) . . . I am on home kidney dialysis, so I don't get around as well as I used to, but I have grand plans.

We hope for chickens in the spring – if I can get a fence built.  And maybe, later on, a goat or two.  My daughter has them for pets.  I was thinking more along the line for milking and weed control.

We have two city dogs, who are learning about country life.  Sophie is a 5 yr old Lhasa-Poo and Quincy is a 5 yr old Shih Tzu.  They're learning to adapt to the country way of living . . . . if we can keep Sophie from "planting" her babies (toys) in the garden!

I have learned so much from this site and laughed even more.  This is just what an old woman needed – CITR and a place in the country!

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or play with it, Just pee on it and walk away

Hello!

My name is Larissa an I live in Phoenix, AZ.  I have 2 beautiful sons (2 and 5) and am married to most wonderful man in the world.

I am lucky enough to live on a piece of horse property right in the middle of the city.  So, we have enough space for some chickens, turkeys, dogs, tortioises, and a garden—but I still put on my business suit and play professional.

I look forward to learning from everyone!

Hi all… long time Lurker, first time Poster!

I am a 46 year old single Mom of two wonderful kids, (Son, 21, Senior in College and Daughter, 18, Freshman in college.)  I have a very wonderful Significant Other who is an over the road truck driver, because Michigan, where we lives stinks for job prospects and the economy.  So, left at home are myself, the Wonder-dog Skye, who is half Border Collie and half Australian Shepard, and WAY too smart for her own good, and the daughter's chincilla, Chi-chi (that wasn't allowed at college.)

Prior to this "quiet" life I am living in now, I was married for 18 years, had a farm, was Founder and Key Leader of a 4-H club, and had my fingers dipped into everything from crafts, cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, spinning, and every smaller farm animal you can imagine.  We ran the gamit from lab animals like rats and hampsters to Angora Rabbits, Shetland sheep and Llamas.  Sadly when the Ex walked out, the farm had to go.  But someday I hope to get back into a lot of this on a small scale.  I had a beautiful Angora pet, Bella, who has passed… but would like to get some chickens and another rabbit.  I continue to can, freeze, spin, knit, sew and now Scrapbook.  Our other passion, when time and money allows, is doing Renaissance Faires and Pirate Festivals.

I think this is a wonderful site, I want Suzanne to be my neighbor (for real, not just in my head,) and I have "met" some people on here I consider to be wonderful friends, even though it is only online.

I am a first-time poster.  I just read Suzanne's article about Glory Bee, her new calf.  She was talking about trying to determine if it was a boy or a girl.  Having been new to farming some years ago, I also faced this dilemma.  My husband's solution was to sneak up on the calf and try to physically check it out.  My solution was much simpler.  I just waited until the new little one had to tinkle.  If it came out from underneath, congratulations, it's a boy.  If it comes out the back, congratulations, it's a girl.  My husband's method had not always been 100% accurate but I can confidently say mine has been.

Suzanne, I love your articles and am happy to be a new member.

P.S.  My name is also Suzanne.

Hi, I'm Patricialynn.  I've been taken lately with the idea of urban (and suburban) homesteading.  I've done a ton of research and some of the research lead me to Chickens in the Road.  Now, I know Suzanne is doing actual farming rather than urban homesteading, but it's still instructive – not to mention entertaining.

My household consists of myself, my fiance' Sean, and my sons – Jonathan (13), James (8), and Jacob (7).  We also have two cats (Ayla and Gryphon) and a hamster (Hamtaro).  We are foster parents for a local animal shelter and are currently fostering and rehabilitating a young Siamese named Sapphire.

As far as space goes, I don't have much, but I plan to make it work.  We rent, but the landlord is gracious about my gardening plans ~grins~.  Sean and I measured the property today and discovered that we have 7200 square feet of space.  Some of this space is taken up with the house (which is an even 1000 square feet), the driveway, and a covered carport.  I've spent all afternoon drawing out everything on graph paper and playing around with possible layouts.

Sadly, it sounds like our township won't allow for poultry – but I do hope to be able to have a hutch for rabbits.

If anyone has any advice or words of wisdom for me, I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.  I've been told I have a "green thumb" because my houseplants always thrive – but other than planting wildflowers one year, I've never actually gardened.

Hi, my name is Renee Crick all my friends call me Cricket no explaining needed.. I moved from northeast Ohio to southeast ohio..a world away!!! I bought land and have started on a new adventure here.

we have 3 goats, one pig ,and to our suprise, now 7 piglets!! Also 149 chickens… 100 of which will be in the freezer soon..  I have 3 sons 1 is still at home with his mommy. he is 17. I wish I could say I make soap or something nice like that but, I am to busy trying to get this land to pay for it's self. I grew up in the country but have forgotten more than I can remember.  I still have my house in the city for the simple fact that the home I bought is so in need of work I can't bring all my belongings here till I get things done.  At this point we have no hot water and heat only with wood. This oven don't work, windows let more air in than light, more dirt on the driveway than in the garden, more eggs laid in the thorns than in the coop, and a pig and 3 goats coming in the house through any opening they can find!! Am I happy?? Do I miss my nice house in the city??  NOT ONE BIT!!!!!!!!! I LOVE it here.  but a looong HOT shower would be nice!!!!

Hey Y'all!

My name is Annette Yu, i'm 38 years on the planet. I'm married to my own Jet Li & we have a wonderful son, Kyle, who is 9 years old.

I've lived in Northest Ohio most of my life, but moved to Kentucky for about 10 years after highschool. I attended college there & met the most wonderful & amazing people. After moving back to Ohio I met my husband & we began our family. I still miss the simple ways of the people I know in KY & love to visit whenever I can, but until then I simply cook & sew here in the Buckeye state.

I love reading CITR, it really helps me stay in touch with my country ways!

Okay… First of all , I am writing this without my glasses.. Kind of hard to wear them with the bridge broken.. I have been on here for a few months commenting here and there, under Susan M. i had trouble registering the first time around, so I did it again.. Thank goodness it worked !

I hope this is where I am to introduce myself…  I am 55( for a month or so) and have been married for32 yrs and have 5 kids – 3 sons and 2daughters…and a 4 month old grandson !

The only time I was ever on a farm was when I was a 16 yr old girl and I haven't forgotten how wonderful that experience was for me! i love to learn anything and everything there is to learn about farming!  I taught myself how to bake bread, can jams and a few other things and how to grow vegetables, though my love for gardening started as a teenager, literally right before I went to visit my aunt and uncle on their farm.  When I was a young mother, I just wanted to have a bigger house…. now, all I seem to think about is buying a small farm so I can raised a few goats, and chickens and a cow or two..And garden to my hearts content ! Suzanne writes such hilarious stories on here and once I read a few of them, I was hooked ! In fact, everybody on here sounds like they've been buddies for years !

So anyway, there you have it from the new kid on the block !sun

Hi there! I’m Terrie Mac, almost 57, have 3 adult children, 5 grandchildren and 2 dogs.  Unfortunately no chickens.  My husband and I have spent most our 37 years together dreaming of a life in the country but commitments prevail. Instead of losing heart and giving up a dream we’ve decided to live like we already live there to whatever extent we can.

Things I enjoy doing seem a bit extreme to folks around here – like making laundry soap, butter, prepping, preserving, composting and hanging clothes on the line. It feels good to put in a full homemade day, to be tired not bored, to create not vegetate.

For years I produced and co hosted a community cooking show, retired, and recently began producing and co hosting an emergency preparedness series for our city.  Like the work not the politics.

Ha! Just got a call from my husband who is crushing grapes this morning for a friend, he wants to know if I want the skin and seeds for the garden soil…guess I better do some research.

I’m looking forward to learning and being inspired by the posts I read in these forums!

I'm Joann.  I'm in my 40's and have a passion for all things homemade and natural.  I get teased that I was born 100 years too late, but I have to admit that I like electricity, air conditioning and indoor plumbing too much to agree with that statement.

My dog is Daisy and I spend my days working at a hospital to support my canning, cooking and crafting habits.

I'm so glad that I found this blog/forum!
