Hi!

My name is Susan.  I am a 39 year old stay at home mom to three great children my two dd will be 7 and 5 real soon and my son is 1!  I am a wanna- be homesteader/ farmer and I have managed to talk my huband into a few chickens.  He is not at all interested in being a farmer!  He loves fishing and hunting and doesn't want to be tied down with critters.  ( Although he really does seem to enjoy watching the chickens doing their silly chicken things!)   I enjoy reading blogs and magazines that have to do with homesteading, gardening, chickens, recipes and such when I do get the chance!   I am happy to have come across this site!  Looking forward to checking it out!

2 Mini Donkeys, 1 Great Pyr, 1 Australian Shepherd, 2 yappie house dogs,

3 Straight Egyptian Arabians, 1 QH mare, 1 fine old pony, and 2 Rescue Arabs

Hello everyone, I'm a homeschooling mother of 3 little ones, 8, 6, and 5. My husband and I have lived off the grid for 10 years now here in Arizona on our 60 acre ranch.  We are so happy with the country life you would have to drag us kicking and screaming back to town!

We raise goats, muskovy ducks, chickens, and plenty of dogs and cats too! I love cheese-making, soaping, homeschooling, canning, and just learning new self-reliance skills all together.

Great blog with wonderful folks and information here, glad to be aboard!

I realized (after going through all thirty-something pages! ) that I never did this thread!  So here's a little about myself.

My name is Dana and I live in Georgia.  I am married, have a daughter and son both just graduated from college.  We live in the burbs, but have a little cottage in the mountains where we can enjoy the woods,  hikes, and beautiful scenery.

I have one quarter horse, two kitties, and one chocolate lab….and we're getting a beautiful new english shepherd puppy next week!

I'm currently in graduate school getting a masters in personal financial planning as I love love love to help folks with financial literacy.  Over the years I've owned a nanny corporation, volunteered as a master gardener, substitute taught in schools, been a room mom and then some, taught sunday school, gone to our church's ministry school, been the pastor on call, and volunteered in our ministry counseling center and learned to make traditional pearl jewelry.   Life has been busy, but I'm looking forward to the next phase of using my financial skills, and enjoying hopefully grandchildren to come!

I love to cook from scratch, enjoy my animals, take fun weekend trips, collect antiques, host people in my home with cute little goodie baskets and homebaked goodies, nurture friendships from my past, take pictures, and listen to celtic music.  I love my life, love my family and love having the opportunity to reinvent myself.  God has been good!

Hello to all,

Mother of two , grandmother of 2  here in Arkansas. Trying to move my family into the more natural way of eating. Making my own bread, cereal, and most things we eat. It has been a learning experience but, I am getting there.  See, you can teach an old dog new tricks.  Have started buying fresh raw milk, grass fed meats, chickens, eggs etc. And any organic veggies I can get. What a great site this has been , I am so glad I found it.

Hello from Texas -  I'm new here & looking forward to meeting some of you and learning more and more about all things "farm-y"!  I've always been a country gal, and so has my husband. We've had our own farm/ranch for about 3 years now and have been gardening, canning (for years) and I've always known how to sew. That's all going well, but I'd like to add chickens, some beef cattle, and I wanna learn about becoming more self-sufficient.  Crafts like soap-making, etc., I wanna learn, too.  So I might be picking your brains all about those things – and whatever else strikes my fancy!wave

Hi everyone! I thought I had posted before, but my post count was at 1 and I hadn't logged in last since October 13, 2009! So I  figured I should post a newbie post.

I am Jessica. I am a 32 yr old SAHM. I am married and we have two kids who are 10 and 6. We live in Colorado in the Rockies in Jefferson County. We have a 5 year old Great Pyrenees, his name is Bailey. And we recently got a Pom-Chi who is quite the little stinker, her name is Nutmeg. (I say stinker because Bailey was so much easier to train!) We have three cats, they are Brighton, LadyMoon and Twinkle, and a little rabbit named Clover. Hubby is wondering if the next pet will be named cinnamon or ginger. wink On that note, I love to bake, but don't know how to cook, well at least not without instructions, even then I make hubby check my food to make sure it's okay. He is the cook, and an excellent one.

I love to do crafts, a wide variety of them. I love to cross stitch. I love aprons and want to be little miss homemaker. I don't think I am one just yet. Been praying a lot about that.

I love Suzanne's blog. I grew up with farm animals in a canyon in the boonies of southern California and miss living the "country life". Here in CO we are at 7200+ feet (which makes baking a challenge sometimes) and have wild animals all around us, it's almost like the boonies but not quite. The house we rent is in a neighborhood with zoning laws so we can't have farm animals. Someday I hope we can live in something more farm like.

I have a blog at http://www.beforethedawn.org/wpblog/ I don't post a lot though.

wave Greetings!

Short bio:  I'm Kelly, I grew up on 10 acres in a very small town in Middle Georgia and I couldn't wait to get out of there.  Now, a mere 8 years later, I'm dying to go back.  We visit every chance we get, but there is no way we can move back anytime soon unless we win the lottery or something.  ;)  My husband and I have a 14 month old daughter who is the light of our lives.  I crochet, bake, cook, and try to sew/quilt when I have time.  He loves plants and gardening, as well as woodworking/building.  We both work full time, however, so there is little time for much of that stuff.  I have long been fascinated with ChickensintheRoad, but have never really read the forums until now.  Now I'm hooked!  :D  I'd love to make new friends here.

I live in Savannah, Georgia, which is not very rural, but my house backs up to a horseranch that hasn't been developed (yet), so I have a nice view and get to hear and see the horses, goats, chickens, and peacocks on a regular basis.  My family (and hometown) is only 2 hours away, and we visit often.  Dad just hatched his first set of chicks in an incubator, and they are so cute!

Currently, I am fascinated with making cheese (but haven't tried it yet!).  I've been reading everything I can get my hands on, and I'm asking Santa for a cheese making kit.  Husband thinks I should ask Santa for a cheese press, but I told Husband that Santa shouldn't have that much faith in me yet…I need to practice with the easy/soft/quick cheeses before I go investing in a press!

My job gets in the way of all the work I'd like to do!

Hi, I'm new to the posts. I have been reading and enjoying all of the fun farm life. Suzanne has a wonderful way of seeing things in a different light. I grew up on a 40 acre farm in NC and wish my kids could have done the same. We live in a rural area now, but not a farm. (The area was a dairy farm years ago). I enjoy baking and cooking all kinds of recipes. I did bake once upon a time, but I have gotten out of the habit and really miss it. I found this site when I was looking for homemade hamburger helper. My husband loves it, and I really don't like it. Preservatives!! I got hooked on the wonderful farm stories and really great recipes. (and the homemade hamburger helper is so much better than store-bought)

I'm also a primitive folk artist. I have participated in lots of shows, but I am taking a break now. I have returned to school to get some "learning" so I can compete in today's job market. I recently lost my job of 18 1/2 years due to the slowdown in the economy. They say you are never to old to learn, but they didn't tell me it would take me so long to learn at this age!!

Looking forward to some good recipes and advice.

Hello ~

My name is Shannon, and I grew up in Rural Southern California (Sounds like a joke right?).  Growing up we had no phones, and no power.  Then I met the love of my life and we moved to Montana (that's where he's from) and I got modernized!  I'm now a stay at home mom to my 7 year old daughter, and loving life!

We live in rural Montana, and my husband is a Railroader.  I enjoy reading, gardening, hunting, fishing and just being outdoors.  We live on a bit of a hobby farm, there's chickens and the occasional cow, donkey and horse.  Things here are never boring, there's always someting going on!

I'm looking forward to finding new recipes and meeting new friends  happy-flower

Hello everyone. This is the very first time I have ever posted anything on a blog. It has always seemed so intimidating, but everyone on this site were so nice, I figured "What the heck?".  So here it goes:  I am 48 years old and live with my female partner of 17 years.  We have a 6 month old mini poodle puppy who is just the best little dog in the world. Our 23 year old niece recently moved in with us to attend college locally. She moved from Las Vegas to upstate NY and is still getting over the culture shock. The snow we had yesterday did not help.

I grew up in extended farming family. My father was a beef farmer and my uncles were dairy farmers. I even have an uncle who is a farm equipment salesman. I now live in the hub of suburbia, but only about 15 miles from my parent's farm. I have been sewing and cooking all my life. Recently I have gone back to my roots and started canning like my mother and grandmother. Making butter too! I think  I will skip the slaughtering that my grandfather used to do in our yard. It is amazing how much these early lessons stay with you and how comforting they are later in life. Despite not living in the country, I believe I have been able to maintain many of the values and lifestyle issues that I was raised with. We belong to a local CSA for our local organic produce and also have a garden at my parent's home.I do not want to return to the farm, so the life I have now is a hybrid of the two worlds and it works for me.

I am looking forward to learning more about making soap and always canning and cooking.

see that wasn't so bad

Hey, y'all! That is my very proper Alabama greeting! ;) My name is Melissa, I am 30 years old and am a single parent to a very cute 5 year old little girl, Lilly Karen.  I grew up as an Army Brat, but I would say Alabama is home.  I have lived in Europe and Hawaii, so my influences, while tinted with a Southern accent, are quite varied. :) I ran across this site while searching for recipes and I'm so glad I did!

Right now, our biggest adventure is…. Kindergarten!  Here she is on her second day of school.  My well-adjusted child jumped into school with both feet and hasn't looked back!  It turns out, I had a harder time adjusting!

Hi, my name is Carol. I am 25 years old and just started going back to school full time for a communication design degree. I have been a farm girl all of my life, growing up with horses, cattle, chickens, rabbits and the list goes on. 4 years ago my other half and I purchased a small farm in Bedford County, Virginia, close to where we both grew up. We have horses, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, rabbits, a llama and a pair of emu. But our main passion is raising Nubian and Lamancha dairy goats. And not to be forgotten the usual assortment of farm dogs and cats.

Growing up I loved every minute of the farm life, except helping out in the kitchen. I regret that now and I am trying to learn everything I can about cooking, canning, freezing and everything else that goes on in the kitchen. I'm a pro at the garden and processing our animals but when it gets to the kitchen I have no idea what to do with it. Luckily Mom is just a phone call away!hug I came across this site in my moosletter from New England Cheese Supply and have been hooked ever since.

I look forward to learning and exchanging information with all of you.
