Hi everyone,
I have been perusing this whole website for a month now and it has actually reawakened an appreciation for my childhood. We used to live in the busy and crowded San Fernando Valley in California but my parents had a few chickens and a vegetable garden in the back and lots of flowers in the front. My dad comes from a farming background and my mother from a fishing village but I lived in the suburbs for most of my life. Now I'm thinking about purchasing some land and raising animals and growing our own food. I'm planning on getting a couple of chickens next year and starting on a bigger vegetable garden. My parents manage to grow some vegetables in the high desert of Southern California, and I'd like to help them expand it. I can't wait to learn more from this website…it's a real inspiration!

Good evening, everyone.
My name is Sherrie Branson and I currently live in Lexington, KY. I've been perusing this site for about the last two months, checking in every morning to see what is new with Chickens in the Road.
I love the camaraderie here!
I grew up in Tucson, AZ but am a native of western Kentucky. In Arizona, we had a small ranch and I grew up with all the outdoor chores of feeding chickens, raising rabbits, riding horses….and then the putting up of chickens and rabbits…. Best years of my life, though.
I'm a court reporter and work long and stressful hours and enjoy disconnecting from my job to do the things that make me most happy: cooking, do-it-yourself projects (you name it, I want to learn it). Problem is I usually work seven days a week and hardly have the time to relax doing the things I enjoy.
When I first got married I canned, baked bread, donuts, bagels…you name it. Then I became a court reporter and it has ruled my life ever since.
I'm pining the simple life again, but until I can accomplish that, I'll live vicariously through this wonderful site.

Hi! My name is Charmaine. I'm 33 yrs old and have two beautiful daughters, and a little one on the way. I also have an extremely wonderful supportive husband. We live on just under 3 acres in Northwestern Ontario in a pretty remote area in Canada. I am aspiring to become more self sufficient and have found HUGE inspiration in this blog!! I have many interests such as knitting, crochet, crafts, cooking, baking, housework and general puttering around the place. I love being outside and hope to have a small farm someday. I love spending time with my family and I am truly blessed as I get to stay home with my children while hubby works hard to support us. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

Hello Everyone,
I can't believe that I am finally on line here. I really join months ago, but somehow my password got messed up (maybe operator error) and I have been locked out. Don't even know how to combine my original sign on, so will just have to forget it and try new.
I read this site everyday, wanted to reply to so much.
I live in NW Florida with my DH on 5 acres of land. No one around, this is mostly farming here and with all the trees you couldn't see anyone if you tried.
I make soap, have a large garden, love to can and dehydrate. I am a homebody…no where else that I would rather be, except maybe here..

Good Morning All! I guess it's time I introduced myself. I have been
hanging around here more and more each day. I love living in the
countryside of beautiful New England. My life is filled with animals,
canning, making everything I can from scratch, and enjoying this season
of my life. I am in my fifties, my husband is recently retired, my
daughter is in her last year of college, my son has graduated and is
traveling the world. I had a sewing business, working for decorators. I
actually have made curtains for some celebrities. But my heart is always
in the woods. We heat with wood, and I have a vintage cookstove in my
kitchen that is not connected, just for decoration, for now. I look at
it and think of the original owner. Did she bake alot of pies, or bread,
like me? Yesterday I took a walk on our property with our two elderly
golden retreivers. The two barn cats were running around us, excited to
have company. I could smell the wood stove and hear all the many birds I
feed. Checking on the frozen garden, I could see my leeks still waiting
for me to pluck them for a recipe. The parsley and chives were a little
frozen too. I headed back to my cottage in the woods, peace within me.
Bread dough waiting for me.
Have a wonderful day!

Hi Shabbysewer and welcome!!
What a wonderland you have written about. It's chilly here too, I'm in Canada south of Detroit Michigan. No snow, sunny but cold.

My name is Lyz and I live in Rochester, NY. I've been enjoying Chickens in the Road for about a month. My mother taught me that do to more with less was a better way to live and in today's world, a necessity. I've been making my own bread for a while, so it is a natural path for me to learn to make my own laundry soap, household cleaners, soap, candles, etc. I suppose I could find how to do those things anywhere on the Information Superhighway, but this blog does it nicely and I enjoy the pictures.

My name is Ross and I am married to Nancy for almost 44 years. I am the 4th of eight childern. I was born in Connecticut and learned cooking initially from Mother. I learned meat cutting from a German butcher in a neighboehood A&P store. Presently we are living in Maryland and have since 1971 so maybe we will stay. I am self employed when there is home repair work to do,
I have done almost all of the cooking and canning since we married. Nancy helped me raise my two boys from my first marriage.
I bake all of our bread, pies , cakes and cookies. I make the jellies ,jams and preserves that we eat and give as gifts. My garden is only for fresh seasonal food.
I think that I will enjoy it here.

Hey Ross—–good to see you here. (There aren't very many of "us" here that we know about. There's Jim in Colorado and a couple of others I can think of—and, of course, Pete.)
Just so you know, I sometimes go into a stupor when "they" start talking endlessly about some things—-like the fine details of knitting or crocheting. I've learned to get away fast when I feel the stupor coming on.

@ 52 HA!
You're very welcome here Ross, I suppose 52 may have a point or two about how "we" go on about some things… but the men in our house always had to do at least a few basic things in the kitchen, and I grew up learning how to use at least a few basic tools and such as well.
My brother even demanded to learn how to crochet, be cause he was fascinated by how that single strand became 'more'. It didn't last long past a few basics for him but hey!

I've been peeking in, and speaking up, for a couple of weeks now, but haven't introduced myself as of yet.
So, hi, I'm Deborah. I'm the mother of a 19 year old, amazingly intelligent and beautiful daughter. I have the greatest boyfriend on the planet. I have worked many jobs in my life, but found my calling and became a chef almost 20 years ago.
And I have a kitten named Freddie.
And I really like it here.

Hi Ross! Great to have you here with us
@52…I don't think we've done much crocheting or knitting lately, actually :) That's a winter time project here!
Nice to finally "meet" you, Deborah!
