Hi everyone! My name is Jenn Thomas and I have been enjoying this blog for sometime now. I especially like the theme and esthetically pleasing topics. I moved several years ago from the suburbs of NYC, where I grew up, to a rural village in Western Maryland called Leitersburg. It is 5 miles from Pennsylvania, 15 miles to West Virginia, 20 miles to Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and somewhere in the Cumberland Valley near the Appalachian Trail. I can attest to the merits of country living. We have more cows and corn here than people and I love it.
I live in a 1897 Parson's House in the square of the village. I teach art history at our local college, have an antiques and garden business and blog on my website. I also love chickens, animals, cooking, vegetable gardening, canning and buying and selling antiques and collectibles. I have enjoyed the animal stories, especially the crooked little chicken love story.

Hello, my name is Tina Gold. I have been visiting this site for a short while now. I found it accidentally but it has become my favorite. I have tried several things that I have learned from this site and am so excited to try more. I live in Arizona, not in an old farm house or anything like that though that sounds exciting to me, but I do live rurally in a farming community. I have chickens, goats, horses, dogs, and I love to garden. I am interested in anything that will bring my life back to the basics. I am so inspired by the stores and all of the helpful hints, recipes, etc. I am excited to start making soap, candles, and all of the rest.
The pictures and wonderful stories are so enjoyable. I look forward to more.

Hi all, my name is Karen. I live in Trenton, Ontario. Right now we are in town :( but hope to move to the country soon. We want to have a little homestead; raise animals, garden, get off the grid, etc. The best we can do right now is going to spend Christmas in a cabin in the woods (on 96 acres) and look after the cows and pets while the owner is away for the holidays. We're sooo looking forward to it. We homeschool our 13 and 15 year old boys and have an older girl and boy who are off at university.
I just came across this site today and have enjoyed it so much. I was looking for how to make fire starters (for the cabin next week) and came here. I look forward to getting to know you all in the new year and spending some time with a big cup of tea looking around.

I just found the forum not too long ago myself. I am a home cheese maker and found the forum through a cheese supply & information company that has a blog that I subscribe to. They had done some interviews for the blog w/Suzanne and I usually check out the web sites of the folks they interview. I really enjoyed this forum and the rest is history. I just wish I had more time to read through it. I work full time so that kind-of puts time hard to come by!
And…we're looking for a little "farmstead" ourselves. I'm from Northern Indiana where there are LOTS of Amish folks and a good amount of farm land. Most of the smallish farms are being farmed but occasionally they come up for sale. My dream is to be able to get a property debt free so we own it outright, and I'm thinking of 3-5 acres…just enough to be able to do a few things without it being too much to care for.

I found CITR after google-ing (what's the correct way to spell this new verb?) for recipes in which I could use my 10 lb. bag of macaroni…up came a recipe for homemade hamburger helper (fantastic BTW, my modification was some sauteed onions and ground venison), and I've been hooked ever since, really, I can't stop reading. Soooo, right now I'm home with the kids 'cause it's a snow day in Durham, NC, and while I should be folding clothes or baking (I cant wait to try the drunken rum cake and the coconut-oatmeal-walnut-rum pie, but those will have to wait for my Xmas guests…the kiddos don't like alcohol in their baked goods), I'm whittling away the hours (literally) reading this site. While I consider myself a bit of a crafty person, I am not of the caliber of your other readers; nonetheless, I enjoy the posts. And while I am also not a stay-at-home mom, in fact, I work quite a bit, I prefer to make home cooked meals for my family. Recently, my husband appears to have developed an allergy to beef (at least the store bought kind–that's a story in and of itself–as a phone call to the USDA proved quite illuminating), so since he hunts, we are trying to switch to venison, and make more of our own foods rather than eating out (hence my search). We even had a wild turkey that he shot for our Thanksgiving meal, and being determined to make an entirely homemade turkey pot pie from the leftovers, I appear to have conquered my arch nemesis…pie crust! Yippee!! The recipe I used was from "The Joy of Cooking", my personal cooking bible, but I am going to try Suzanne's recipe, since her crust looks amazing :) Well, that's enough of my babbling for now, I look forward to all the unread posts, and to hopefully posting a few of my own fave's, including an amazing recipe for meatloaf, with venison of course!

Hi everyone! My name is Brenda and I recently found this site and am addicted to it!!! We live in SW Michigan, raise Rocky Mountain horses, chickens for meat & eggs, started a 4 member CSA style garden/farm plan last year and want to expand on it this year. Right now we rent at one location but want to move to our 37 undeveloped acres with one of those old houses that probably should be torn down but we're hoping to be able to stabilize the old girl and make her liveable once again. At only 920 sq. ft. she is definitely on the tiny side and very, very "needy". You know…she "needs" a new roof (5 layers on shingles on one part), she "needs" insulation, she "needs" new wiring, she "needs" new floor joists under the kitchen (currently round logs complete with bark and dry-rot), she "needs" a wrap-around porch to help stop the basement from flooding, and the list goes on, and on, and on…
I started canning again, love wood heat in the winter time, want to learn how to make soap and cheese, get a milk cow, use a wood-burning cookstove once again, and share what I learn with others. I think I'm in great company. Thanks everyone for your sharing your wisdom and thanks Suzanne for this wonderful site!

Welcome Brenda,
Mother had a hybrid stove on the farm. Solid fuel on the left and four burner propane on the right with a dual fuel oven. Used the wood stove in the winter and the gas stove in the summer.

Hi! Jenn Thomas, our new chick, could you please post your blog name I'm currentlyso I could read it. I,too.buy and sale antiques and old stuff. I love civil war era and stories and currently restoring a 1900 farmhouse here in PA.
Brenda-Sounds like you have a diamond in the rough with your "old house". They are alot of work, but they old houses have alot of charm. Our first house we bought had no running water or furnace or bathroom, but we got it pretty inexpensively. We sold that house to our daughter 4 years ago, and moved down the road now to our farm. There was alot of work we had to do, but we love it here.

Hi everyone, my name is Lisa. I live in Arcata, CA. A small rural town in the very north of the state. I live on a small, 10 acre, farm with my husband and two kids. Lauren is 13 and Nathan is 15. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 horses, a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats, chickens and muscovy ducks. My son is the bird whisperer and takes care of the flocks. My daughter is very involved with her horse Dallas and also makes a great midwife to our Nigerians.
We currently are milking 4 of our does and it was last Spring that I came upon Suzanne's site and loved it. I had made cheeses such as chevre, fromage blanc, ricotta, and ricotta salata. It was Suzanne who inspired me to try chedder. It turned out fabulously. I have since been working on a washed curd cheese, following the Goulda recipe from Ricki Carrol's book. I love all the pictures and humor.
Our place is a work in progress.

My name is Lisabeth and I live in Yankton, Oregon, iust outside of St. Helens. We don't have a post office here so we have to have a St. Helens address.
My BO and I have been married 3 years tomorrow and have a small farm with beef cattle, dairy cows I milk, pigs, a donkey, dog and cats (3).
I got started here because Suzanne made cheese from the New England Cheese Co. and I get their letters every month. I got HOOKED on CITR immediately and made Suzanne's and Cindy P's Velveeta. BO liked the Lactic cheese and the Velveeta was very good also. When BO likes it it is a hit! Since Velveeta is his favorite I had to make it, so now I have to make his favorite Velveeta and Rotel Dip for him.
Thank you Suzanne for the recipes and I have to say thank you to Cindy P for the Velveeta recipe. I had wondered what I was going to do for one and here it was. I especially like how Suzanne tells you when she does things different or spells thing out so you can do as you please. It sure makes recipes easier to make.
Anyway I milk cows, sell milk, eggs, cheese, and butter and I teach new cheeses, too. So, when I learn something I pass it on to my prior students.
I am planning to start sewing classes after the first of the year. There is such a shortage of good seamstresses out there. Not many schools teach the professional techniques. I went to a school called the Fashion Academy in Costa Mesa, California years ago and need to pass along my knowledge before it is gone for my head also.
BO and I have a house that was built out of recycled wood from an old Grand Stand in St. Helens at one of the middle schools back in the 70's. We are working on rebuilding it from the top down. We have a huge house and I would like to make the downstairs or upstairs a rental, but what do you do with all the family stuff from the past. We have given away more than we could think and still have lots. When you put together three households it is HARD! Then who wants someone living that close in the country?
