I have a special surprise for you today! BuckeyeGirl from the Chickens in the Road forum is providing Putting Food By, a huge (454 pages!) resource on canning, freezing, salting, smoking, drying, and root cellaring. This is the latest, updated edition with the newest canning and preserving instructions and techniques. Tons of recipes!! It’s like the BBB times three.

The first edition of Putting Food By was a gift to BuckeyeGirl from her mother years ago, and in her honor, she wants to give the new 5th edition to one of you!

B.G., I read the post and I like your mom! She sounded like a “Don’t sweat the small stuff…” kind of gal.

I, too, had an original copy of “Putting Food By” but loaned it to someone many years ago and have long since forgotten to whom. Hope they are using it in good health. Of course, it could have been returned and just stashed on one of my bookshelves that I haven’t dusted in ages. Oh yes, I identify with your mom. At any rate, I am sure much has changed since those days. Early ’70′s, as I recall. A new, updated copy would be most welcome.

P.S. I’m just glad I got to check in while the contest is still running, instead of being “a day late and a dollar short” and missing it like I have been lately.

Sounds like I would spend days, weeks just sitting and reading this book whih is what I love to do. It is getting colder here so I love to curl up with hot coffee and a good book. Heck it might even teach an old dog a new trick! What fun : )
