Apple Spice Simmering Potpourri

Remember all my apples? Not so long ago, I was overwhelmed by produce, most of it free, including apples. The fresh produce is gone–but not completely! I have so many things still to do with what I saved. So many FUN things! I put away so much fruit for further efforts. Some of it, I will be canning into wonderful goodies for Christmas gifts. But the peels and cores and even some slices–I put them away in gallon freezer baggies preparing for a wood stove and simmering potpourri.

I put the peels and cores and slices in the dehydrator.
IMG_9322
Then packed them away in the freezer for potpourri.
IMG_6696
To use them for a dry potpourri mix now, I would put them briefly in the dehydrator again because they will have collected some moisture in the freezing/thawing process. But to use them for simmering potpourri, the brief re-dry isn’t necessary. They can go straight in the pot.

And oh the pot!
IMG_6663
It is difficult to go a day without waxing sentimental about the wonderful readers that come here. This pot was sent to me by my dear reader Jo.

It is the most lovely and perfect pot. It is pre-worn, which is the epitome of its perfection.
IMG_6669
It is sweet and beautiful, just what my cranky old wood stove needs for a love match.

And it cried out for my apples. The ones I have been saving for just such a blessed occasion. (And many more. I have apple and peach peels and cores and slices for a whole winter of lovely fragrance.)

How to make Apple Spice Simmering Potpourri:

cinnamon sticks
ginger slivers
whole cloves
dried apple peels, cores, slices
IMG_6705
I used one cinnamon stick, broken, three slivers of fresh ginger, and about a teaspoon of whole cloves. To that, I added enough apple to make a heaping cup.
IMG_6711
I poured water into the pot until it was about 2/3 full.
IMG_6718
These ingredients can vary easily depending on what you have on hand, as can the measurements.
IMG_6721
I had a good fire going in the wood stove. BECAUSE I DIDN’T MAKE IT. (You could also simmer on the kitchen stovetop, of course.)
IMG_6722
My house smells like an apple pie doing handsprings. I love my mean, old wood stove. And I love the smell of apple and spices!
IMG_6727
It makes me feel happy in spite of my wood stove. I will not let my wood stove defeat me, I will not! I have apples! I have spices! I have a yummy-smelling house!

LIFE IS GOOD.

    :woof:
Good morning Suzanne–I am so happy you like the pot, it looks wonderful on the stove, and thank you so much for the recipe, I will try it in my old pot as well.

    Jo

  2. YayaOrchid says:

Oh, I can only imagine how wonderful it must smell! Love potpourri!

  3. IowaCowgirl says:

Once again I am awake at this unearthly hour because I MUST VOTE at the instant I can!

Oh, and did I tell you??? I have a pot like this one. Now I am inspired to make potpourri on the woodstove. duh. why have I never done this quite like Suzanne before??? I too have mega-fruit resources and now have an outlet for the over-ripe ones. I can’t WAIT until tomorrow (ask me about this when my husband drags me out of bed to haul corn at 7) to do this. On another note, has anyone ever made British plum pudding? I am starting this tomorrow since it MUST be made on “stir-up Sunday”…which is tomorrow.

  4. Terry Stites says:

I like your recipe. I have an electric simmering pot, and I have put cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and some cinnamon oil in it. Yummmm!

  5. Suz in the Tules says:

    :duck: Try making fire starters;
Take a muffin pan. Put papers in each cup OR
    use an egg carton.
Fill each cavity with wood chips.
In the meantime, melt parafin bars, the kind you use for canning.
You can also use leftover candle bits, especially fragrance candles.
Pour slowly over the wood chips.
The egg carton can be cut into however big a section you need.
I use these on top of the paper, under the kindling. They get it going good and hot. A lot less fuss than coddling a fire along.
    Susan

  6. Marla says:

What a great way to use the pieces of apple that are normally thrown away! Your house must smell like hot apple cider is simmering. Yum! It’s beginning to smell a lot like winter! :reindeer:

  7. AsTheNight says:

I have been known to put a small simmering pot on the heat vent when I want that fresh baked apple pie smell in the house…but that’s only because I don’t have a wood stove.

I got my vote in early today – 8169 votes. Darn insomnia.

  8. gwen says:

we live and learn, thanks for the lovely ideas, and voted for you so………still keeping my fingers crossed
    good luck

  9. Darlene in North Georgia says:

Oh, I wish now I hadn’t thrown away my peach pits and skins! I never thought to do what you’ve done.

Voted again today. I hope that in our desire to have you win, we don’t resort to unscrupulous measures to “help”. That one or more contestants are offering large prizes to voters is a shame, but hopefully, none of us will become cheaters for your cause just because “others” are doing it. The fact of the matter is, you were able to blast past the others with our votes in a matter of a few days. Which means you command a readership that is loyal to your writing. The fact that people are being offered large prizes for votes won’t get the contestants anywhere. The SAMe people want readers to come to their site each and every day. How many people will tune in to read a blog post from the “winner” when the winner offered a chance for cash if they voted? The only reason they voted was for a chance to win the money. No money? Why read it?

Truthfully, I think offering any type of prize is going to backfire. Remember that only 20% of the vote is coming from “winning”. The deciding vote will be from the committee running the contest. They’re smart enough to realize the people offering “money for votes” won’t bring them page hits. And that what it’s all about! Revenue and SEO are hit-based. Sales are hit based. If I’m voting because I want money, I’m not coming back when the money dries up. However, if I’m voting because I read your blog and want to read more of what you’ve written, I’ll be back.

Winners never cheat and cheaters never win. Not really! So let us rise above the crowd and let the SAMe people see that you have a devoted readership that is with you because you are a good writer and not because we’ll “win” something if we vote for you!

WE vote for you because we love to read your stories. We’ll go read your blog on SAMe because we want to read more of what you’ve written.

    Ok, off my soapbox now.

  10. EightPondFarm says:

It appears to me as if the “Big money” $100 weekly prize is not going to start until and unless she wins the position — she is not doing it now. And while I agree with a lot of what Darlene says above, I am afraid the people running the contest know all too well that it is about hits and it is about money (which is why there is so dang much of it being offered). People offering money or anything else will get the traffic. How valid it will be is a question: I would go to read Suzanne on a Sam-e site, but I doubt I would ever buy Sam-e. Then again, I might be tempted by something else I saw there.

  11. Minna says:

Mmm. I must try that one.

  12. CindyP says:

Oooo, I can smell the warm apple pie way up here! What a lovely gift — JoJo knew you would put it to use right away and keep on using it!

Voted!!! We’re lagging behind just a bit, but your loyal readers and fans will all pull together to get you up there. We’re pulling our heads together, being fair and legal, of course!

I wish Sam-e knew now how big of a fan base they would be getting just by having you write their Good Mood Blog! Thousands per day! One more cuppa in the morning would not kill me, to sit back and enjoy another story from you! The motivation and inspiration I get in a single dose is huge………but 2 can only be better!

And I wonder if they understand that having a farm is a stressful job — with the economy it could put anyone in the dumps, but you persevere, keep your chin up and you give us a good mood blog every single day of the year!!

Off my soap box as well……..

  13. Debnfla3 says:

    I love that pot!

I don’t have a wood stove but I can simmer this on my stove burner. Ican just smell that apple pie smell now!

I already voted today…David is about to vote.

    Deb

  14. Heidi533 says:

Every house should smell like apples and spices in the fall.

  15. trish robichaud says:

i just voted 8262 , i read what darlene said and was just sick. i cant stand cheaters, my mother always said “liars and thieves go hand in hand” meaning they are one in the same. if thats the only way those girls can get votes , then i hope judges can see how loyal your readers are suzanne.i had never even heard of sam-e until you. if you win , i will read that blog everyday. oh well , honesty will prevail.

  16. shirley says:

I vote for you every day. I want you to win.Your kids are so blessed to have you for a mom.

  17. Berta says:

    Voting every day!
Very foggy morning here in SEMichigan, like “pea soup”…hmm…maybe I should make some today? I have my great-grandmother’s recipe. Also have her white enameled coffee pot and it’s a ringer for yours! I’m gonna put some orange peels in it right away.

  18. TXLady says:

Morning Suzanne…I love the pot and the recipe…I just voted and am sending out the emails. I’ve resorted to begging and don’t mind groveling if I have to….

Hope we can raise the tally today but I hope it is all on the up and up today too….

    Ruthie

  19. Johanna says:

Heck, I always toss the apple peels and cores to the chickens! I guess what they don’t know won’t hurt them, I’ll keep some in the house to make it smell all delicious.

  20. Cindy says:

I have the woodstove and a pot but hadn’t thought to use apple cores and peel–thanks for another great tip! :airkiss:

Uh oh…cash for votes…sounds like they are taking their lead from some in our present gubmint … :hissyfit:

  21. Cecelia says:

Oh, I do love that pot!!! I do not have a woodstove though, my Mom does..I have gotten her to read your blog so hopefully if she uses her woodstove this year she can try that. I only have a gas fireplace and if I had gas it would be on this morning….chilly…brrrr.

Up and voted, now off to fix breakfast for my youngest and his sleepover buddy.

    Cece

  22. Gypsy says:

    Hi Suzanne

I am dropping by from Golden to Silver Val’s and I must say I think this is a beautiful blog. I will definitely be back and will be voting for you as often as I can.

    Good Luck.

  23. Carmen Smith says:

That sounds wonderful! I love the pot too, it looks so old timey sittin’ on your stove:) Going over to vote now….GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

  24. debbie says:

Is your freezer that well-organized that you can put in what other people throw out, find it again and turn it into something beautiful? I tell ya, people, she’s a seven day wonder. Now, tell me what you can do magically with kitty litter, ’cause that’s the only kind of garbage I have plenty of.

  25. Mary says:

I have a collection of those old coffee pots. I have made and served apple cider from them in the cold months…starting now. I wish I had been saving scraps for the potpourri. I’ll have to get started. Thank you for the great idea.

  26. gagirl says:

mmmm apple spice …. must go peel apples right now!

voted this morning… Suzanne is behind by @100 votes…

  27. Amy says:

“shame” my sister sent me a potpourrie pot years ago, I have no idea where it is. If you’re going to soak everything in water on the stove, why would it matter if the apples collected some moisture from the freezer? Can’t you just put them right into the water in the pot?

  28. Ang. says:

My similar pot has always been used for decoration. I have never actually USED it! What a novel idea…using it! Thanks for that idea. 🙂

  29. Joanna Wilcox says:

I’ve got ya on my blog.

Nothing better for me than the simmering combo of apples and cinnamon.

  30. jason says:

Glad to see the voted stayed very close thru night…usually lose more ground than that. Should be able to pull ahead today!

  31. Abiga/Karen says:

Blessings to you this Sunday! My daughter was just asking yesterday if we still had mulling spices for apple cider. Have you written about that for the holidays? We usually buy a packet but after seeing the potpourri I’m thinking it can be made by ourselves. What do you think? Going to vote….

  32. Celia says:

Ummm, sounds great! My family loves Russian tea in the winter…and the smell of it simmering is out of this world, too! Found out you can vote on each browser, each computer, but never could get the voting link to pull up on my cell phone…always had a location error…grrr! I’m not voting for any prize…this blog is enough prize for me… :shimmy:

  33. Berta says:

….would like to add that my favorite use for this style enamel pot is for steaming asparagus…which stands upright in an inch or two of water,…bottoms cook thru, tops perfectly steamed.

  34. Valerie says:

Good morning everyone! I need me a dehydrator! Maybe I’ll post on Freecycle. I DO have a pot like yours, Suzanne, in cream and green. Now all I need is a woodstove. We have one of those old stoves, pretty decorative with a finial on top, not the kind that is flat on top. Gotta do my simmering on the regular stove top I think.
I agree with Debbie, who said your freezer must be well-organized. I can’t even find the stuff I put in there yesterday. Have a wonderful day.

  35. Judy@daily yarns says:

I’m going to have to try this recipe out. I love my wood stove and this would be great simmering on top of it this winter.

  36. Lish says:

I bet your house smells wonderful! I can’t enjoy things like potpourri. I’m allergic to cinnamon..for one.. hives = no fun. And my husband has odor induced migraines. Very few things we can use around here! What I wouldn’t give for that smell in my home!!!!

  37. Leah says:

Good morning Suzanne! M.S. doesnt make a home any cozier than yours! I’m off to vote….

  38. Mary says:

Happy Sunday Suzanne–love the pot;love the blog; love your video–and especially love Clover.

  39. Crystal B. says:

Hi Suzanne. Thanks for the recipe. I love the smell of apple potpourri.

  40. Claudia says:

Apple cores and peels are horse treats in my house! I like the smell of oranges, cinnamon and cloves too!

  41. Yvonne says:

I usually buy my mulling spices and simmer them in apple cider. Not any more though, I will be trying your recipe. Thanks.
I can just smell your home now, yum!!

I just want to say that Suzanne does not have to resort to buying votes because all of us love her and this blog. It’s so obvious by your vote count, whether you are up a few hundred votes or down a hundred votes. You will never have to offer us money to come here or to vote for you sweetie. So sad that people resort to this type of behavior. This is my “pick me up” place to come every day. Keeps me in a good mood. You ROCK Suzanne.

  42. Laura says:

Girlfriend, you are in the lead again! HAPPY DANCE! :dancingmonster: :snoopy:

I am so lovin’ that pot! We have a wood stove and I do the same thing. A toasty warm fire and the scents of fall/winter is just AMAZING! You can get the aromas of baking and not have to lift a finger!

    Blessings to you, Suzanne~

  43. linda says:

I wish i had the time to do all that you do i bet your house smells really good I have been voting for you every day i know how much you want and need the job

  44. Rebecca says:

Mmmmm. I can smell that wonderful aroma wafting its way across the state line… thanks for the recipe.

  45. ataylor says:

If I close my eyes I can smell the deligh here. I have always used a old pot on the wood stove but I am so in search of a pot/teakettle like that now.

  46. Chic says:

Love your coffee pot Suzanne and what a nice gift from Jojo. I need to buy a dehydrator …we have the fruit trees but there was a freeze this spring that killed the blossoms so no fruit by the time we moved here. Next year I’ll do this for sure…and I even have a pot similar to yours that is sitting on our woodstove filled with water and cloves and cinnamon and ginger and even a little allspice. I need the apples to be complete! I voted and you’re ahead again…YEAY. We want YOU Suzanne…no one else will do for that job!! :hungry2: (pitchfork!)

  47. IowaCowgirl says:

I certainly second what “Darlene in North Georgia” posted. Well done.

  48. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

I bet that smells so good!!! I love that old pot.

    I voted!

  49. Renita says:

:duck: great idea of putting the potpourrie on the woodstove. think I will do that today. It will be great with our Montana snow.

  50. Darlene says:

I voted! And now I want a wood burning stove! In the meantime I’ll just use my potpourii warmer.

Just wondering…..have you ever made pocket bread? (I’m looking for a recipe as I love to put my salad in pocket bread. The store variety is so bad now I don’t buy it at all.)

  51. Moi says:

Why have I not thought of this? *forehead slap* Oh, the years of wasted peels and cores just tears at my frugal heart!

    Thanks for the incredible idea!

  52. Nancy in Iowa says:

At least you didn’t make me drool on my keyboard today – I have a hard time keeping it clean. But now I swear I smell spicy apple pie throughout my apartment – must be the magic computer that brings me your blog each day!!!

  53. Lynne says:

Keep a firm hand on your fireplace poker as sometimes that is the only way to show a stubborn stove who is boss. I’m also being “heat with wood stove ” challenged but I know I will overcome and so will you…. I used to heat my home in the mountains like this for years… i can’t have lost that many brains cells between 40 and 55…. can I.
    Have a sweet day!

  54. Cheryl says:

Apple pies doing handsprings?! Sounds like it would smell delightful. Love that old coffeepot. It was made for that wood stove!

  55. trish says:

I was 8860 and I will go to my desktop again today. I have been putting my 2 votes in everyday. Fingers crossed!!

  56. Moi says:

    An idea just hit me:

When not dealing with gobs of produce at once making it worth firing up my dehydrator, I bet I could just keep an old cookie sheet on top of my woodstove on which I could toss occasional peelings & cores to dehydrate. Free dehydration plus adding to the aroma of potpourri should I have some going. I’m going to give it a try.

  57. Patty says:

I think you need to figure out a way to provide us with the wonderful smell of your home through the blog!!! Dang that sounds awesome, wish I had a wood stove to do that with.

  58. NorthCountryGirl says:

That apple/cinnamon potpourri must smell wonderful! I wish I had my wood stove…moved and had to leave it behind. I can simmer apples and cinnamon on the stove but I still miss my woodstove.

Well, I voted and checked to see how things are going. Ahead for now but it’s so close and back-and-forth that I don’t think the votes will be that big a factor. Suzanne’s talent; faithful followers, extraordinary accomplishments, and downright sweetness will shine through. And that is really what matters anyway. We’re all behind you, Suzanne!! She’s our SAM-E!!!!

  59. Cranberry says:

Well now I have to peel an apple just so I can do this!! Breakfast!!!
    :pinkbunny:

  60. DebbieInMemphis says:

I love winter. I miss having a wood stove. There is nothing better than sitting near the wood stove watching snow falling and having your house warm, toasty and smelling wonderful.

  61. Brenda says:

I have a similar looking pot that my mom bought me when I lived in Florida during 2004- 2005 and all the hurricanes ( we survived Charlie) we didn’t have electric or water for 6 days. So my mom bought me the pot to make coffee on the grill, bless her heart.. she knew I am addicted to coffee. She is gone now but the pot is still with me. Thanks for the idea to make potpourri… She would be happy to see me use it. Too bad I didn’t save all my apple peels from the 27 quarts of apples and apple sauce I canned this year although the deer sure enjoyed them.
Looks like your in the lead with sam-E… Keep up the votes, lets keep Suzanne in the lead!

  62. Tracey In Paradise Pa. says:

:purpleflower: Oh the treasure!! The pot and the imagined smells.lol Love the fall!!
    Granny Trace

  63. Ms E says:

Does this mean we (you!) are a step closer to a detante with the wood stove?!

  64. maryann says:

I tried the reopening a browser and revoting but that didn’t work for me. What did was using a different computer. So now I can vote a couple of time a day for you.

  65. smilingcow says:

:chicken: I voted for you again today – and thanks for the potpourri recipe! In the past I’ve made a mixture of dried apples and dried oranges with cinnamon for my family for the holidays – and it was always a hit. I may do it again this year!

    Beth aka oneoldgoat

  66. Amber says:

I can imagine how wonderful that must smell! Love the enamel pot too!

  67. Stacy says:

Now I want some hot apple cider. And a fire. And I can’t have either right now!

  68. Pete says:

Great idea for the potpourri! Guess what I’ll be doing with all those pits and peels in the freezer that WERE going to be peach pit jelly… 8)

  69. Jean says:

That is absolutely the perfect pot for a woodstove potpourri!

  70. Kristen says:

Thanks for the memory, the reminding me of things I no longer do but that can change. 😀

My daughter says give Clover a cookie from her (the daughter is lobbying hard for goats).

  71. wvhomecanner says:

NICE! I have a old coffee pot like that only it’s blue and white swirls. Sits on the top of the hoosier collecting dust 😮
No woodstove here but the stove will work …..

  72. Val says:

My gravatar worked! Yippee! Thanks for the info on signing up for it.
I voted today using Firefox, then Internet Explorer, then I downloaded Google chrome and voted a third time. DH has the first 2 browsers, so I used them, too. Fervently hoping you win, and totally addicted to checking the vote. Now I’m going to make some Cranberry Sauce from your recipe. :hungry:

  73. M.J. says:

I didn’t read the comments section yesterday, so I was flabbergasted when I looked at the vote count today. I am just appalled that other finalists are trying to buy their way into the Sam-e job. If the corporate folks have any integrity at all, they are aware of these shenanigans–and of the authenticity of your reader love and support. You bring such moments of joy to our days, Suzanne.

And now everyone: KEEP MOBILIZING THOSE FACEBOOKS AND ADDRESS BOOKS AND TWITTERS AND BLOGS so that Suzanne maintains her rightful place at the head of the pack!

  74. sidneysmom38 says:

Great Idea.. I love to simmer spices this time of year.. voting every day.. good to see you had pulled into the lead..

  75. YayaOrchid says:

I just found I can vote again in Firefox. Someone on one of the other blogs mentioned they could vote again in their laptops. I don’t have a laptop, or else I’d go and vote there too. We’ve got to rally and keep voting for Suzanne.

  76. Euni Moore says:

Late start today, but my vote was 9196 and DH’s was 9208 just a few minutes later Love the post with the old coffee pot and the apple potpourri but do have my mothers 70 year old teakettle. Gotta get it, clean it up and simmer away some potpourri.

  77. JenniferB says:

I love the smell of potpourri, but I am severely allergic to cinnamon — what would you suggest as a substitute for this purpose?

  78. KATIA CRISTINA says:

I LOVE THE OLD POT AND THE RECIPE TOO.
    I AM VOTING EVERY DAY!!

  79. Melody says:

I have found the best fire starters. Save lint from your dryer and put in empty toilet paper rolls..They work very good..

  80. catslady says:

    😥 Brigitte is ahead 😥

  81. Brenda S 'Okie in Colorado' says:

I vote everyday and pray you win. I would be here regardless of a contest. I love your blog and your down to earth personality. Just wish we were neighbors. Thanks for being here.

  82. Jessica says:

That is such an awesome idea. I want my house to smell that yummy too! ;D

    Been voting for you daily!

  83. Amy says:

Yep, she’s ahead, but its a very narrow margin. Suzanne is by far the better blogger. She has more writing experience.

  84. Sharon Gosney says:

Oh no…your second!! I have to go and get you more vote. With the wonderful smell your kids must be looking for the apple pie.

  85. Estella says:

    That old pot is awesome!

  86. Anne P says:

Wow… your house must smell glorious!!!

  87. Michele Messier says:

I love apple spice Potpourri too.

  88. Andrea says:

I love ideas like this that don’t let anything go to waste!

  89. Jo says:

Oh, Suzanne, I voted on Friday before I left for the weekend but couldn’t find a way to vote on Saturday! I tried on my phone but it wouldn’t let me! I voted just as soon as I got home today. Missed your blog terribly.

  90. Pam Helle says:

:fairy: I just love reading your blog and all the cool ideas you have. You make my day! I am hooked.

  91. 5kathleen2 says:

Hi Suzanne! I love your new pot. Thanks for the great ideas. I have voted and feel if the Sam-e people know what they are doing you will be the winner! We all love you and your blog.
    Kathleen H

  92. Patty says:

Oh, I love that pot! I’m going to have to go browse the local antique shops and find something like that. It would so great in my old fashioned kitchen! I can’t wait to try this potpourri! I can just imagine the smell in your home. 🙂 Voting as often as it lets me!

  93. Deb says:

Thanks for this recipe….I’m in love with smells (not farm smells but potpourri smells!) 🙂

  94. Jenny S. says:

I absolutely loved this post. Reading your blog always brightens my day! How would you go about making dry potpourri with similar ingredients (smells :))?

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

I would do it pretty similar for a dry potpourri, though I’d re-dry the apples after taking them out of the freezer (just a little bit, to get the moisture from thawing back out) then probably also add some potpourri oil to bring out more scent.

  95. Hrist says:

So what do you do when it boils down – add more water, or start all over again?

In a stupendous feat of procrastination, I just watched all 20 videos . . . There’s maybe two or three people you need to be worried about, but that’s all. And yours is by far the best quality video.

  96. Kim W says:

    MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Thank you! :shimmy:

    Blessings from Ohio…

  97. calamintha says:

I voted for you because I moved to West Virginia from a city, love to cook, wrote a romance novel (a really bad one), spin yarn, make soap & wish I had goats and chickens. I live vicariously through you on this blog, because I’m not very good at any of these things.

Good luck on the SAM E job. I’ve been voting and crossing my fingers for you!

  98. Janessa says:

That pot/carafe is GORGEOUS. Where did you find it? I love your site and keep up on it as often as possible.

  99. joycee says:

There you again, making my day wonderful and now my house can smell all down a country road-snowy day-apple pie yummy! Thanks Suzanne for sharing these great recipes for Home Sweet Home!

I really enjoy your blog-I can’t sleep lately at all. I’ve got something wrong with my Right arm and I’m going to get a second opion tomorrow from a surgeon. I’ve got 2 of my friends turned on to your site. My one friend, Holly has ordered a chicken coop and is now looking for goats.Love you recipes, especially the breadmaking. Keep warm and keep up the good work! Alanna
