Bringing Green Inside

May
7

Get out there and get some green! Not putting the gorgeous wildflowers down for a minute, but in between vasefuls of their showy splendor, give the green some love.

Look, the chickens will even go with you.

They might not be real helpful, though. But they’ll keep you company.

Go out in your back yard or into the woods, stop on the side of the road, it’s everywhere. Cut leaf-filled branches, long ones, short ones. Look for different sizes and shapes of leaves. Different textures. Don’t forget the grasses! I love this tall, tall grass near our pond.

Shorter grasses are good, too!

It may look like a clump of weeds now–

–but there are probably florists in New York City who charge high-end hotels $100 to put a single clump in a vase just like this.

You can fill your house up with green and it won’t cost a thing.

Give ’em water, and the grasses and leafy branches will last several days or a week, depending on the variety.

And when they’re fading and limp? You can just go get some more. Spring is very generous!

I don’t have chickens, but my cat follows me around the yard. I have to be careful not to trip on her. hahaha

  2. Lisa says:

Oh how I wish I could bring green inside! I’d love to make flower arrangements too, but alas, the Sassy Cats would just eat them and then I would be cleaning up vomit from all around the house. Guess I’ll just have to go on more walks in the yard and enjoy it right where it grows.

    Very nice!
Just make sure, if you have a lot of poison ivy in your yard like we have at the farm, that you don’t choose that!

    Have a beautiful weekend! 🙂

Love the ideas and it made me laugh, yes the cat would LOVE it but those little gaks are so gross and my hubby is just so allergic to poison ivy/oak. I’ve always wondered if the owner of the fields north of us would mind if I ‘borrowed’ some of his wheat or corn. I felt guilty for a while about taking some cotton a few years ago.

I like to make arrangements with the wild grasses and those soft, fuzzy weeds that look like wheat. Even though they are just weeds, they look very pretty in a vase on the table.

  6. Diane says:

Very pretty. We have a lot of neat trees and grasses around my house too. But never thought to pick some and put them in vases around my house. Good idea. Free is always good.

  7. Nancy in Iowa says:

This reminds me of my Mom, who would bring home shells, driftwood, sea grape leaves and other goodies from the beach to put in arrangements. She was also great with pinecones, rocks, anything! Especially something with berries. She would have loved your ideas! Thanks for the memories….

After reading today’s blog, I braved the wood ticks and crossed over the ditch to pick some Lilacs. I hate wood ticks but love Lilacs.

  9. CindyP says:

I love the tall grasses, too! I wish I could get down to the creek easier…..all sorts of pretty grasses down there!

  10. Judy says:

What a neat idea. I’ll have to wait until the rain stops to go get me some green.

  11. Margaret says:

Great idea! I’ve been bringing in grape hyacinth, lily of the valley and lilacs, but some of the green plants are just as pretty. Keep up the good work on this blog, I look forward to reading it. My daughters love the pictures of the giant puppy.

  12. Eliza says:

I’m sure the chickens were excellent, vocal company. They probably wished you were digging the green up, though! Thanks for the reminder to enjoy everything plants give us in spring… I’ve been overdosing (is that possible?) on the roses this week.

  13. CherShots says:

Great idea, time to do that again! Thanks!

Beautiful idea! And best thing, I wouldn’t have to pick my flowers which I’m always loathe to do, even to deadhead them for more blooms!

  20. Window On The Prairie says:

Never thought about bringing in some green along with the posies. Great idea.
