Having a party? Go to the “free store” — woods, gardens, creekbanks, roadsides. That’s where all the best stuff can be found! Why pay for decorations when Nature so beautifully provides? Put branches with colorful leaves in vases. Cut wildflowers and late garden flowers. (Weeds are wonderful!) Grab pumpkins and gourds and fodder shocks from the garden.

The Chickens in the Road party is today! If you’re coming– Welcome! If you’re not– I’ll have pictures soon.

Little’s already hiding. He’s never been to a party before!
P.S. If you’re not having a party, decorate for yourself! Get outside and capture autumn. It’s waiting for you!

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

I love those colourful, bumpy gourds. Did you grow those? DSo you save your own seeds for next year? I’d be interested in trading you for seeds from those, when the seeds are ready. Wait until the gourds are finished and almost rotten, then cut open, wash off seeds and dry well. Plant next spring early indoors on the windowsill. Save some dried ones to trade with me
Is that a massive squash at the bottm of the front steps next to the pumpkins in front, or a large gourd? If its a squash, I’d LOVE some seeds from it too!
I’m a seed junkie and I admit it, but I really will grow those, really I will! (Its even worse than my need to collect shoes.)
