Chickens don’t like the cold.

They haven’t driven in weeks.

They don’t even know where their car keys are.

And they don’t care.

They’re too scared of the snow to drive.

They stay home and impatiently count off the days on the calendar till spring. Hasn’t it been winter long enough already?

Was it ever warm? Will it ever be warm again? IS WINTER ALL THERE IS AND ALL THERE WILL EVER BE?

Spring is but a cruel dream! A heartless myth! Spring will never come, never! O, happy dagger, where art thou? They are so dramatic sometimes.

THEY ARE SUCH BIG BABIES.

Oh wait.

That was me…..

Maybe all the chickens should have a crotched dishcloth to use as a shawl – then they could get warm (and look likke they came out of a Beatrix Potter book!)

I love the duck in each photo! The duck reminds me of the “Where’s Waldo” books that my brother had as a child. Maybe the chickens would like winter more if they snuggled with the Giant Puppy!

GOOD GRIEF!!! After seening the pictures of that one section of icy road, I would be chicken too! It still makes me shutter! I am scared of ice on flat, salted, roads with flat fields on either side.
Yep! If you’re a chicken, I’m a chicken too!!!!!.

It’s nearly 3am and we are still waiting for our first snow even to start. Most school systems are closed in anticipation. I’m nearly 46 years old and I still watch Snowbird to see if our county is closed!

Stay warm and safe. Spring is just around the corner!

I remember when you challenged ole man Winter this past Autumn. Oh we both were brave and looking forward to him coming into our world then….both of us are tired of him now and like most visitors, whe really do believe he has overdrawn his stay. Makes you long for a soggy, dreary, green, Spring morning for sure. We will survive ole man…just don’t hit us with your best shot yet. Please? It is now 20 degrees on the Mountain…a regular heat wave with a forecast of 3 to 6 inches of snow to fall in the next 24 hours. What fun that should be.

I haven’t been anywhere since last week. I’m not ashamed! When it snows and the roads are covered we are supposed to hibernate! I’m positive it’s written down somewhere. It might be in chicken scratch, but it’s written down! The little car that passed by this morning at 6 a.m. doesn’t know that, but my SUV does!

Well, when you have to get in the car to go to work, you pretty much have to get in the car to go to work. Though I wouldn’t want to go around that bend on your road! Can you go down there and shovel it really well, then spread something for traction, so it’s less slippery looking?

And I think Miss W was right — the chickens need hand crocheted shawls. Then they’ll be happy!

I can only stay in for so long. Snow on the roads do not bother me but ice is another story. I had to drive on bad roads for years when I worked in town. So there would be nights I would be out on them at 2am in the morning. Just go slow. So it still does not bother me. Ice on the roads is another story. Then it is time to stay in. Cant drive on that crap for nothing. lol. I think a good project for your road is to get a gard rail along that bad area. OMG my heart just stops seeing you have to drive past that.

The duck with those chickens looks funny. He looks like the strange kid who is trying to fit in with the popular kids at school. Just an odd duck. lol.

We don’t have snow but it is twenty two degrees this morning and I have to get out to feed hay to the cows. Then it’s back to the house to hibernate. One thing that helps me pass the time is to practice gratitude. I am grateful for Chickens in the Road and You too Suzanne, and all the kind people who are here commenting everyday.

Good morning!

The first day it snowed here, I had to go out and hand gather all the hens to put them to bed. They absolutely could not walk through all that awful white stuff up to their coop door!

Yes, I used to have 40-50 Muscovies! This was way back when I lived in Texas and we had a couple acres on a lake though it was really a suburban neighborhood (it just had big yards). I kept Muscovies and LOVED them. I want to get some Muscovies in the spring. They are much better free-range ducks because they can fly and escape predators. I still need some more “regular” ducks though because I love the quacking and Muscovies don’t quack!

Here in Iowa we are expecting wind chills of -20 to -30 below and it’s been snowing now overnight on top of LOTS of snow from last week and the week before. I have a 25 mile commute each morning. I want to be a chicken. I WANT to be a chicken in a pen who doesn’t have to drive and can just admire Mr. Goose. cluck cluck cluck

I don’t blame you one bit for not wanting to drive that road, it looks treacherous. And anyway, why SHOULD you go out, you have everything you need right there in your house. I, too, am sick of the cold and snow already. At least it’s above zero today, it’s 3 degrees right now. And I am also counting down the days til spring on my Clover calendar. Love the chickens with the one duck. Evidently he thinks he’s a chicken now.

We have mixed Muscovies on the run-off pond down the road. Every day they fly or waddle down to our house for corn. Since it has been so cold they are going through a lot of corn this winter. I think it might have been a mistake to challenge WINTER this year. We are having the longest cold spell in Florida. Possible snow tonight. Maybe we should all apologize to WINTER and she will go away.

I’m too “chicken” to drive too! We got about an inch more ice last night. Been home all week and you know, I love it…that stay-home-from school feeling is still inside me!

I love the duck standing in the middle of all that drama with a “HEY…DID I MISS SOMETHING?!” look on her face. My hens are big babies, too. I have to sweep the snow off their yard so they can see the ground or they won’t come out of the hen house. They are my babies.

Totally stocked up and all the tinfoil a woman could want? I’d say the chickens are good for a few more weeks. It seems as though, to me – winter just started mere weeks ago and although I am no fan of cold I do enjoy the heck out of the snow and the ability to layer and wear winter clothing.

You’ll be surprised chickens – Spring will be here before you know it and then you’ll be lamenting the heat, lack of rain [or too much rain that flooded the road] and/or the dead garden.

Suzanne…one of the things that I love so much about your blog is how your chickens have so much personality! I have had to bring one of my hens in for some rehabilitation. She’s LOVING it in the house and I may never be able to put her back in the coop. The whole chicken diaper thing is a fiasco though. I thought you might get a kick out of seeing my hen Helen dressed in her diaper, watching TV..it’s on my blog now. Stay warm girl! We are getting socked with a foot of snow today. I love it, but I’ve no where to drive right now….so I can just look and enjoy!

do you suppose your duck is trying to convince herself she’s a chicken? Dixie, I’m in SW Iowa and still loving the snow. However, I don’t go out willingly. But after being snowed in for 10 days around the holidays, got some guys to dig/hack/shovel out my car and ran errands.

I dont like to drive in the snow either Suzanne. This a.m. when I got to work the parking lot was all ice! I found this out when I fell as I was getting out of my car! Good thing, I saved my coffe. Didnt spill a drop but my side hurts! Be careful and enjoy being home.
To everything there is a season. Winter is the season of snuggle, wine and woodburning stoves. Oh yea. And staying inside, looking out and saying,
“Isnt the snow pretty!”

Ah, it was -13* this morning! But the wind has died down so it’s not really bad; face hurts kinda wind! The sun is shining making the snow sparkle like diamonds! Just gorgeous!

The chickens are pretty and cute and all, but it’s the duck that adds the punch line to the photos! Miss Scarlet (O’Ducky) could have her own fan club, I think.

Woohooo! We’re finally getting our snow!
We have all of, oh, 1 1/2″. And of course, the schools are all closed and the town has closed down “because of ALL the snow!” lol

Truth be told, since the snow sticks so infrequently, it’s cheaper to close down the town than to buy and maintain snow removal equipment. Though the Yankees surely do mock us for it.

My 12 yr old son has had a saying since he was 4 or 5 when it is cold outside he says “It’s freezing chicken cold” I believe these chicken are freezing chicken cold!

It’s a very smart chicken that’s afraid to travel THAT road in THESE conditions, lol! I finally got my votes registered for the Weblog, too…yay! I put my goats in a stall in the barn with a heat lamp…and still worry about them. Next time I post, they may be napping in my laundry room… Love Mr. Pibb, too! You are so blessed with wonderful animals.

I hate the snow too, unless I can stay home through it all, of course! My ducks LOVE the snow and rarely will go into their house. Why are they so crazy??
