Emergency Broadcast System

Dec
21

If this post appears, it means that we have no power and no internet access at all. This is my automated emergency backup post. Don’t worry–we have plenty of food and wood and aluminum foil.

In the best case scenario, I’ll be back tomorrow.

In the worst case scenario, it might be longer. I’ll be back as soon as I have internet access.

Rest assured, the staff is working on it!

May The Force be with you.

  2. Lisa Carper Stott says:

Suzanne, I feel for ya! I finally got out of Gay this afternoon. I am not sure if this would work for you, but I have Verizon Wireless and we get cell towers at the trailer and I hook my blackberry up to my laptop and use their internet! It’s great! Of course, you will still need to power the batteries on the laptop and blackberry! Unlike you, I don’t have a river or creeks to cross, but I have a series of large and in charge mountainous hills to go down once I am on the ridge. Thank God for neighbors! I think that they should make City folk wait for power restoration and get to the country folk first! You guys have it way bad! I learned that first hand! Keep warm!

  3. Hrist says:

But . . . assuming you wrote this a while ago and just make it *not* post every day, how did you know in advance that you had enough foil stocked up? What if last night Clover and the chickens broke into your cupboards and made a giant aluminum-foil sculpture in the front yard? We wouldn’t know!

  4. Gen says:

Too cute, I love the fuzzy butts of your staff. Here is wishing you are well and looking forward to hearing from you all.

  5. CindyP says:

Hang in there!! Have you gotten everything ready for Christmas with this unplanned break???? Not sure what can be done without electricity, but I know you’ve come up with something!!!

    :woof: :chicken: :sheep: :moo:

  6. Sheila Z says:

Oh staff, Staff, STAFF! Staff is heard singing…….

“There ain’t nobody here but us chickens
There ain’t nobody here at all
so quiet yourself and stop that fuss
there ain’t nobody here but us
we chickens tryin’ to sleep, and you butt in
and hobble hobble hobble hobble it’s a sin…..”

  7. ticka1 says:

Your faithful fans are still here. WE are waiting for your return. Stay safe and warm! Hope your power outage is short-lived and live returns to normal for you on the farm!

  8. Tracey In Paradise,Pa. says:

:snoopy: Thinking of you and your family! We too got alot of snow but probably not as much as you. Stay warm and toasty next to your fire.

  9. auntbear says:

Even in emergency mode you are the best part of my morning.

  10. Kathryn says:

Love your staff. Hope your day is better. I know you are going to be designated woodstove woman of the new century soon!

  11. Kelly says:

Oh goodness! At least this year I won’t be wondering if you are freezing (I want a wood stove really badly)!

I can’t wait to read about what you found to do while your power was down.

  12. Leah says:

Just hang in there, see you when you are able.

  13. Jayme aka The Coop Keeper says:

Sounds like fun to me! Just for a few days though. 🙂

    Enjoy your peace and quiet.

    Stay warm!

  14. Mary says:

At least we know you are prepared. Stay warm and play a couple board games with Morgan. We’ll keep the light on for ya.

  15. Mim says:

Glad to hear that you were prepared for this “little” bit of snow. The weather forcasters are not usually this lucky in predicting the weather. Maybe Santa gave them an early Christmas present. :pawprint: :pawprint: :pawprint:

  16. NorthCountryGirl says:

Good to see the staff is on top of the problem…fuzzy butts and all. Hope you’re back soon. Stay warm and have a quiet, peaceful day.

  17. Debnfla3 says:

I truly can’t imagine being snowed in!! But with food, wood and foil….everything must be okay…LOL

    Deb

  18. JOJO says:

Just think–some folks pay a lot of money to spend time such as this in the the snowy mountains to relax by the fire and the enjoy the fragrance from the candle light–now if we could just find those folks and get them uo to the farm—-just sayin!
    Take care.

Even when she can’t be here, Suzanne finds a way to get that message to us. Thank you, we appreciate it.

I made the marshmallow lollipops for the people at work. Of course, I did try one. They are great and so easy and fun to make!!!

  20. Karen Anne says:

What do you do with aluminum foil?

  21. kerri says:

I hope the staff doesn’t demand too much overtime :chicken:
Thinking of you and praying that power will be restored soon. Hope you’re managing to get through the deep snow to do the chores without too much difficulty, and that the generator is working well.
We have light snow falling this morning (which is beautiful!), but other than that storm seems to have bypassed us here in upstate NY.
Happy Winter Solstice. Old Man Winter made a grand entrance! :pawprint:

  22. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

I am thinking of all the time you will have on your hands to come up with great ideas to share with us!

Stay warm and hurry back  !

  23. trish robichaud says:

its cold here in florida too. not much sun in the sunshine state! i am with you in spirit, i know what it is like not having power. when we had our bad hurricaines a few years back, we went without power for 15 days. cold showers, standing in hour long lines just to get ice everyday for our coolers. there was one pizza place open 27 miles away, we have three sons and two of them were in high school so i would buy eight pizzas a day.after it was all over, i didnt eat pizza for almost a year. you have taught me how to make things from scratch so if that ever happens again, i, along with my generators will be o.k. stay warm

  24. Barbee' says:

How exciting… and incredibly beautiful! Be careful out there taking care of the animals. I hope they don’t think YOU did this to them. Tell Coco to be on predator alert! There are bear hunts going on in three counties of eastern Kentucky for the first time in 100 years. I hope that doesn’t chase them out your way. Lots of hungry animals out there besides teenagers. 😉 I bet those beans tasted wonderful after working and doing chores in the snow.

  25. joycee says:

So glad you are warm, have plenty to eat and the aluminum foil is under control!

  26. 5kathleen2 says:

Looking forward to your regular post. I am sure you are all up to something. Take care & stay warm.
You’ve got the fire, pantry full, generator, aluminum foil! :snoopy: :snowman: :snoopy: :snowman:

  27. Claudia W says:

I guess I should never complain about being without electricity again! I can at least get out and walk to the store which would be on emergency generators.
I hope that you areokay there and having fun doing what you do best. You are in my thoughts and prayers that everything goes well for you!

  28. Melinda says:

Enjoy the break and try to stay warm and fed! Hopefully, you will be back online shortly…..if it takes a few days, rest assured, we will be waiting!! :sheepjump:

  29. Claudia says:

I bet you are keeping that fire hot!

  30. rain swazey says:

  34. Euni Moore says:

Hang in there, it won’t last forever; only seems like it. Use this down time to unwind from all your recent activities and recharge your batteries. We will all be here eagerly awaiting you when power is restored. Hope and pray that all your staff, goats, sheep are staying warm and cozy. Finished up the twig stars yesterday; too clever for words. Thanks for the idea.

Could this be natures way of saying Susanne slow down you’ve been too busy? Love & Hugs

  37. Mary says:

    8) Hang in there and be safe. I can’t wait to see the wonderful pictures of your winter wonderland and find out how your critters fared.

  38. Christine says:

My staff won’t even come out in the snow. Lazy buggers.

  39. Michelle Natale says:

I hope you get your power back soon!!!
In the meantime, glad you’re warm and safe.
I wish you a truly blessed Solstice! May the coming light shine bright this year for you and yours!

  40. Box Call Charleston WV says:

You would think that folks opposed to coal fired power plants would tell the electric company to go away. I love electricity. Went without only one day so to those still out I feel for you.

  41. ChrisUK says:

Like Karen-Anne.Im slightly baffled,Are there any vitimins in Aluminium Foil :help:

  42. Mittened Paw says:

I miss you and I hope that you are back on line as soon as possible! Stoke the wood stove, make some hot cocoa, dream of things you can make with aluminum foil and keep your staff warm and happy. Merry Christmas!!!

  43. Gail says:

We are snowed in here in the mountains of Virginia, but fortunately did’t lose power. There is just no getting down the driveway.

You have such a dedicated staff.

Stoke up the woodstove, find a comfy seat, a nice warm cup of something good (you know, with rum or brandy in it), Kitten and Little curled up on your lap, and a good book to read. Doesn’t get any better than that!

  44. Cindy says:

By now you’ve probably found that being without electricity isn’t so bad when you’re as well prepared as you are! Our biggest issue is water and your early storm reminded me that we don’t have any 5 gallon buckets filled up and stored yet and I should get more gallon jugs of water to store too. We have the wood stove and oil lamps and plenty of lamp oil and all the food preserved from the garden plus meat in the freezer. We also keep a single burner propane camp stove for quick coffee with our Melita one cup filter system.

The hard thing is withdrawal from the internet! :bugeyed: But after a few hours I settle down in front of a window to read.

Hope you are enjoying your adventure and looking forward to your return, Suzanne!

    Cindy in Indiana

  45. BuckeyeGirl says:

Chris, Don’t you remember the storm last year when Suzanne was running out of aluminum foil? No one will let her forget it, and one of her friends brought her a super-duper commercial-sized box of it to last summer’s party, so she’s got plenty. Here’s the link to that story… (though I think she linked to it above too) https://chickensintheroad.com/blog/2009/01/28/snowed-under-send-aluminum-foil/

Last we heard, Suzanne’s got the generator running at least part time so the well pump will run, and plenty of wood piled on the porch, and plenty of foil. I too hope she’s tucked up on the couch with a hot toddy and a good book, or maybe a board game with the kids, or some knitting, or other crafting. Oh, let’s not forget a nice pot of soup or such warming on the wood stove (though I believe she’s got a gas range in her kitchen).

I must say I hope she snaps lots of pictures too! We’ll all have a lot of catching up to do after this!

  46. Miss Becky says:

well I am looking forward to the tales you will tell about this snowstorm, and of course the beautiful photos that will most surely accompany them! Hang in there, be warm, and enjoy the stillness ~ it only comes around every now and then

  47. Blessings says:

Silent Night Wholly Night all is CALM, ALL is Bright!
Merry Christmas from our home to yours!
Happy to know your prepared for the Winter Solstice Season!
    ~~HUGS~~

  48. Jodie says:

I hope all is well with everyone except for the power outage. At least you have a couple of backup options: wood stove and generator. Take care. I’ll be thinking of you all in the WV woods all snug in your house with the animals all wanting to come inside where it’s slightly warmer! LOL

  49. Arlene says:

I have faith in the power company!! :snoopy: :snoopy: but just in case have a great Holiday!!!! We will miss you so much!!! Wooo hooo!

  50. Laurie says:

We look forward to hearing from you when the power comes back. You are a true pioneer and know you will be fine. You have winter under control, that I have no doubt.

    Laurie

    Hope it comes back soon!!!

  52. farmershae says:

Hi, My name is Shae. I am a Suzanne-aholic. I’ve gone without Suzanne for 19 hours. I don’t know how much longer I can go without a fix…. :bugeyed:

Just kidding, I’ll live without – it’s tougher for you folks in the snow then my going through withdrawls! Be SAFE out there!!!!

  53. Melita says:

Ha ha! Love the pic of your staff running around like chickens with their, Yikes!, never mind! I can just picture the chickens having meetings about everything, ha! Miss you Suzanne, but I know you’ll be just fine…you have plenty of aluminum foil. Can’t wait to hear how things have been.
