Guide To Entertaining Yourself In The Country, Tip #485

Nov

Go to the local cemetery and check out all the old names that have not made it back in style.

Where have all the couples named Jasper and Bertha gone? And the brothers America and Columbus? Sisters Emma and Amma? (Emma, okay, but Amma?) Esby? Hoy? Laxie? Rusha? Rean? My own grandfather was named Romeo Napoleon. My grandmother’s name was Olive. Got any particularly odd ones in your family tree? I bet Romeo and Olive hung out with Jasper and Bertha….

Apparently, Icie was a quite popular name. I spotted it over and over. In fact, just recently, there was an obituary for an Icie in the Charleston newspaper. Her name was Icie Box.

I’m gonna cut that out and put it on my fridge….. I’ll tell the kids, “Put the milk in the icie box!”

Or would that be weird?

We don’t have any particularly odd names in our family, but the kids have friends named Remember and Opal.

My dad’s name is Frithjof; he’s German. But a lot of people can’t say it correctly and abbreviate it to Fritz.

His mom (who actually just passed away yesterday at 96, a mercy she finally let go) was/is Gertrude. Don’t hear that one too often.

Your grandfather had quite a name to live up to, Suzanne. Romeo Napoleon? Wow. Any interesting stories about him?

So sorry for your loss, Kim A.You will be in my prayers. My great grandmother’s name was Delitha Berthina. Talk about wierd. My next door neighbor when I was growing up was Icie Anthony. As you know I’m not a young person(except at heart) so that name was popular years ago. Have a great day and  to all.

Kim, Romeo Napoleon died when he was 25. But not before he left the name Romeo Napoleon behind for one of my uncles, who also died very young. (Hmmm. An ill-fated name?) My uncle who was named Romeo Napoleon went by the nickname of Chub.

My great grandfather was Luther, my grandfather’s sisters were Esther, Hannah, Eunice & Maude. He also had a brother Hayden. The rest of his siblings names are still popular.

No it wouldn’t be weird!

Icie? Icie Box? Why DO people do that to their kids. LOL. Don’t know why, but I always kind of enjoy walking through cemetaries and thinking about the people who walked before us.

I love the name Romeo Napolean – a study in contrasts. I can see where it might be cursed though since the original owners didn’t fare so well (after a fashion).

Let’s see, I had a g.gma Zelda and g.gpa Denman. The rest of the names weren’t too unusual.

Well, there was Aramantha Grimsley Reed. And Fielding Grimsley, Gholson Stepp, Hardy Hunt, Welthy Jones, and Peter Proffer (picked a peck of pickled peppers…. :rotfl: )

Well my mom and her sister’s are named after my opa’s old girlfriends lol Don’t hear many Elona’s and Ursula’s around. Going way back though, we have an Olive, Eva, and Starr. My aunt on my dad’s side did one of those huge sites going back to the 17-1800s with all the names. I’ll have to check it out again one of these days

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
