I love the unexpected. See it?
(Photo taken on the deck of the Cheat River Inn Restaurant outside Elkins, WV.)
On this very rare weekend away from the farm (cousins and kids left in charge) to drive around in the gorgeous mountains, I was exposed to network TV, high speed internet, and restaurants!! I was baffled and dumbfounded by network TV since I have no idea what shows are what anymore. Restaurant food made me miss my own cooking. (Though the Cheat River Inn Restaurant is lovely–if you’re in the area, I recommend it!) And high speed internet……made me want to write my congressman. (Why oh why can’t we get anything but unreliable, slow satellite “high-speed” in the country?!)
My favorite quote from this weekend: Princess spent the first night with a friend then came back over to the farm on Saturday. On the phone before she came over to the farm, she said, “I’ll take care of the animals. I guess Clover needs a milkin’.” What a farm girl! She was ready to charge back to the farm and catch Clover up on her milking! (She has never milked Clover on her own before, without me being there.) Apparently, she didn’t get my memo that we were done milking for the time being, but despite Clover’s unrelenting, stubborn, ornery behavior, Princess was going to milk her! I almost hated to tell her no. But I like Princess and I didn’t want Clover to take her down for the count so I let her know that would not be necessary. Or even smart…..
So? So? Do you see the unexpected in the picture?

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

That is an adorable back deck. Someday when my kids are old enough to stop destroying everything, I’ll be able to decorate like that. It’s so pretty!
I totally agree about high speed internet. I telecommute, so while I can live anywhere, it’s got to have decent broadband. Your slow satellite “highspeed” won’t cut it. When the mountains and back country gets cable, then I’ll move LOL.

Is Princess not THE SWEETEST daughter in the world!!!! Best daughter EVER!
I’m sorry Suzanne, but I would NEVER miss MY cooking, eating in a resteraunt. LOL But, yes, there are times we have eaten out WAY too much and I did miss a home cooked meal. I would still hire a cook before a housekeeper ANYDAY. ha! But, I am making a big ol pot of Chicken n Dumplings today and doubling the dumplings and I would miss THAT.

Our satellite was really slow and unreliable for about the first 6 weeks we had it. I kept doing the speed test thing through the hughes site. Some days it would be fast, some days slow. I finally had enough and called and complained. They make you jump through a bunch of hoops and do this and do that, but eventually they’ll figure out that the satellite is slightly misaligned. The tech guy had to come out and adjust it. Once they did ours, it worked wonderfully for the remaining 9 months that we had it. Great speed and reliable. I had someone else tell me the same thing about theirs so you might want to complain to the company if you haven’t already. Oh, and skip the first level of support people. They read from a script, can’t figure out a problem, and barely speak English.
Also, call your phone company frequently about getting DSL. We called about every 3 months or so and I guess they got tired of us calling because they extended the service to us.

I can relate the satellite internet. I recently moved out in the country and left my DSL and Direct TV behind. We are now sattelite internet and tv antenna with local channels.
Good-bye city life!
