I was blown away by the comments yesterday about what you would do if you won the lottery, what incredible, generous, stunning thoughts you shared. The people you would help, the causes you would support. So many first thoughts that were so selfless.
And there I was, all depressed because I have no money, pounding away at my book so that someday at the end of the rainbow someone will pay me, and buying lottery tickets. (I didn’t win.) And there you were, with all your sweet, awesome, amazing comments about the selfless, generous things you would do if you won. Which reminded me that, hello, I’m not the only person in the world who needs money, and hello, I’m NOT THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD. And that I’m really pretty lucky.
I wish I could highlight all the beautiful comments, but then I would just be repeating all the comments–and you can read them here–but this one from Carol especially touched me.
A woman in front of me in the grocery line was $40 short on a very large grocery bill. She was really stressed about what to put back, her kids were getting whiney and she was getting teary trying to put back, and I just said “will you let me help you pay this” and she cried and I cried and the grocery checker cried and that was the best thing ever and no I didnt have an extra $40. It was totaly spontaneous and the Universe just worked it out. Maybe I would hang out in grocery stores and just do that.
Sobbbbbb!!! No matter what we see on the news every day, we live in a wonderful world with wonderful people. And the most wonderful people in the world are the ones who have no money. The best things in life are free.
So, since I didn’t win the lottery this time, I’m going to spend the weekend with this stunningly ridiculous and ridiculously stunning girl. For free.

I was trying to take her picture, but she wanted me to answer her question first. No picture unless she had an answer!
“Okay, okay,” I said. “What’s your question? Now let me take your picture!”

“You know those tiny airplane bathrooms? What happens to the poop? Where does it go?”

I have no idea why this question was so pressing or why it even entered her mind. She’s like that. Inscrutable.

And beautiful.

And when I took enough pictures, I confessed, “I don’t know where the poop goes. And that is too an answer!”

And she said, “Go to your room.”
She cracks me up. For free.
What do you get to enjoy this weekend for free?

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

Many years ago, when I was in my early 20s, I was quite down and out (unknowingly clinically depressed, though that’s another story) and spending a winter collecting what was at the time municipal welfare. My winter boots had holes in them and I had no money for a new pair. A friend of mine, who went to a prayer group on a regular basis, asked for a pair of boots for her friend (i.e. me). When the session broke up and everyone was leaving, one person gave her $5 toward my boots and another gave her $35 toward my boots. I took that $40 with deep gratitude and humility and also some shame and bought a new pair of winter boots that kept my feet dry.
I have *never* forgotten that kindness of strangers. And while I am still broke most of the time, struggling to make ends meet from paycheque to paycheque and racking up credit card debt, I know I am deeply blessed and very, very lucky.
This weekend I have errands to run, which won’t be free, but if the weather is good on Monday, I might get out and take pics (long weekend for us in Canada), which is therapy of sorts for me, a true joy. And being entertained by my cats is always free!
Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

I guess what I am saying is – we dont need the lottery (but it would be nice  ) to help others. Simple human kindness goes a LONG LONG LONG ways.

Today, for free – I’ve already done one of my favorite things…it is 20 minutes until sunrise but the Continentel Divide sits to my east, but the sky is light with pre-dawn and I’ve been out with my dog watching the light, listening to the birds and sipping my coffee.
It is also grocery shopping day which I happen to love doing, time to mow the grass for the first time – not so much something I love, but it always feels good to get it done and then sit on the porch with a cool drink and admire…not that I have a “lawn” – it is more of a woodsy grassy, weedy but green patch…
Happy Saturday to you Suzanne and Princess!

Simple blessings: a father in law who likes me, a father in law I like, a parent figure whose opinion I completely trust, being in a position to even discuss the possibility of buying a house, dinner, family, love.
It’s important to remember how rare and special those things are.

I got to spend some time with my parents. This really doesn’t sound like a big deal, I’m sure, but it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to hang out with just my Mom, Dad, Brother and myself.

My weekend of free is consisting of helping my Princess get ready for Junior Prom tonight. Taking many many pictures and going to prom for the first thirty minutes of fun.

Then we graduated, got jobs, car payments, a mortgage, and more mouths to feed (pets and our Princess). But we remembered where it was we came from, and kept up the tradition. On some of those Friday nights now, there is a homeless man who sits underneath some trees near the Whataburger we go to. My husband always asks him if he’s eaten, and gets him the same thing. Why do we do this?
Because one time when we were starving students in Lubbock, I was at the United grocery store and saw a lemon meringue pie in the bakery. I only had about $20, not enough to get the pie and what we really needed. I told the clerk, “next time”. I checked out and put my groceries in the car. As I had my back to the parking lot, I got tapped on the shoulder. One of my professors had seen me debating the pie. He had already chosen a pie for his family, and decided he’d choke on it if I didn’t have one also. So he grabbed one and paid for it (leaving a cart full of groceries—I had seen him shopping) and brought it out to me. A simple gesture, but one I never forgot.

What I get to enjoy this weekend for free? Enjoying commenting on people’s posts and the use of free wireless internet to do it. My landlord has me hooked to his wireless service so that I can enjoy the laptop that my dear brother gave me. Both are true princes in my heart. Carolyn xxoo

My husband helped a neighbor cut wood for next winter and the gentleman is tasking us to dinner tonight. I don’t have to cook and we don’t have to pay!

Tonight my daughter and her fiance come in from out of town for more wedding planning and tomorrow my niece’s 7th child is being baptized.
Oh and tell Princess that I would guess “it” goes into a holding tank until they land and it can be emptied. Otherwise it would be raining poop from the sky :fan: I think they use to dump it over the oceans :drowning: but I hope they don’t do that anymore.
