A Miracle

Feb
12

About 20 minutes after I got up this morning, the power went out. (And it just now came back on.) It was dark. I lit a couple candles, then took a flashlight and went back to bed to read. When it was light outside, I came back downstairs. Casper was sitting at the door on the back porch like usual. He got up and ran around the side of the house for a few seconds, then came back and sat down again. I thought I should do my routine check on the front porch, feeling kind of hopeless about it. It’s a glass-paned door, so you can see right through it. There was a big mound of white fur on the other side of the door. I couldn’t believe my eyes. IT WAS COCO. I ran out there and threw my arms around her neck, crying and blubbering and everything.

Morgan had spent the night at her friend’s house up the road. I got Coco inside, and started trying to call, but I had to wait till I guess they got up and plugged in their non-electric power outage phone. I had them go wake her up to come to the phone. I said, “Morgan, guess who I have with me right now?” She said, “Coco?” She came home as fast as she could.

The only vet I could find open in the area is the emergency vet in Charleston. They told me all they do is stabilize animals until they can get to their regular vet. Coco was walking on three legs, holding up an injured back leg, but she appeared perfectly stable and alert and fine otherwise. I called my cousin, and he and his wife, Sheryl (who is a nurse) came over. Sheryl brought her nursing supplies and checked Coco over and did some tending and pronounced that the wound I thought looked horrible actually looked pretty good to her. Coco’s leg isn’t broken, unless there is a hairline crack or fracture that isn’t evident from examination. I’m sure the vet will do an x-ray, and her wound will need sutured. Morgan is going to stay home from school tomorrow to help me get her to the vet (and into the car, ack). Coco is eating, drinking, and acting normal other than walking on three legs. She walked around and around in the house for about half an hour on three legs till she finally laid down and took a nap. She is tired. I suspect she wore that injured leg out running on it because there’s no way she raced down the ravine out of the pastures and up over the ridge on three legs. She didn’t bark when she came back, by the way. I had no idea she was out there until I looked. I think Casper did know, though, because when I checked on him on the back porch, he got up and ran around the side of the house, then came back and sat down again. I think he was just keeping tabs on her.

I’ll be keeping her in the house until she’s recovered, then she’s back behind the fence. We’re still planning to get a Pyr puppy here, thinking a companion for Coco will make her happier behind the fence. (I can’t put Casper in with her with the goats and sheep. He isn’t aggressive at all, but he harasses them plays with them. Only his idea of fun doesn’t match up to theirs.) But, that is for another day. Today, I have my sweet dog back. I can hardly believe it.

We’ll never know where she’s been or what she’s done for the past five days, but when she got done doing it, she came home!!!!!

Thank you so much for your support! (I’m sorry it took hours after she came home before the power came back on so I could tell you!)

Oh friend I know and don’t know. I am happy your puppy is safe again and with you. Your post made my day better as we lost our beautiful Annie (golden retriever) after a courageous battle with health related issues. It was on the same day your Coco got hit. On that evening had come to CITR for a diversion and read what happened. At least I knew my Annie was at peace while you were battling with the unknown. Our animals enrich our lives. Thank you for sharing your heart.

  47. Sue, a Florida Farm Girl says:

Must be the day for power outages. Our coldest day of the winter (high 20’s overnight and only into the 40’s today) and we lose power in the wee hours of the morning and don’t get it back until nearly 2 p.m. No idea what caused it.

  48. sal says:

I am so relieved. I’ve never met Coco, but I know fully how devastated we’d be if this happened to one of our dogs. And it easily could–we’re fronted by a road and backed by countless miles and miles of uninhabited state forest.
Please keep us posted on her treatment and recovery–as the spouse of a small animal vet, I want the details!

Immense relief and joy for Coco, Morgan and you. I believe you said accident happened on the access road that runs through your property. Can you post signs to encourage (I’m trying to be nice) the drivers to slow down. Casper, one of cats, chickens could be next. May I send you some of the ‘Dog xing’ or ‘Cat xing’ or whatever I can locate to post along that road? I’ll even look for a Chicken sign.

Did you call the neighbor who hit her? It sounds like he’s a good guy and was worried too. …I’ll bet he’s a lot more careful even though from what you said he wasn’t being crazy or anything.

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

BuckeyeGirl, yes, in fact Morgan was spending the night at their house (the man who hit Coco)–it’s their daughter who is her friend. He brought Morgan home and came in to see Coco and was so relieved, too. He had searched with us the first night. He didn’t mean to hit her, of course, and was very worried, I know. (THAT has to be a terrible feeling, also–having hit a dog, or cat.)

I knew before I read this that CoCo was back. As I was getting ready for work this morning I wondered if I had time to check my email, etc., then your blog came to mind and I knew instantly that Co Co had returned. I must be psychic!

How Wonderful!!! So strange..when I was about to open this the feeling just washed over me that this would be the case…you would tell us that your dear Coco is home..Praise Be!!!

  132. joeyfulnoise says:

How wonderful! I had been praying that at the very least you would know for sure what happened to her. Praise God that you not only know, but that you have her back!

I’m SO glad she came home. It really is amazing – and no broken bones!

Oh, thank the Lord! Checked yesterday morning to see if Coco had come back, but…nothin’. Then I got no blog reading time until just now. What great news. So happy for everyone, especially poor Coco, who must feel particularly loved with everyone so happy to see her.

I got online just to check and see if there was any word on Coco. Got excited when I saw the title! So glad she’s back.. Happy for all of you, including the poor guy who hit her. Tht must have been really hard on him hitting one of his daughter’s friend’s pets. I mean it would be hard hitting any pet, but when it is your own kid affected and their friend you see a lot, well, that would be really hard.

I am so happy for you and just happy, period. This is such good news! She probably was shocked by the event and just kept running. But, she’s home now, safe and sound. Our prayers were answered and I feel your relief all the way here!

That has to be the best Valentine’s Day present ever! Horray!!! As far as putting Coco back out when she’s fit, I had a thought: instead of a Pyr puppy, how about a Pyr old boy? Every once in a while folks in my area give up their farm and offer their Pyr guardians to good homes. It would seem that maybe she will feel more relaxed in the company of one who more than knows the ropes and would enjoy having a beautiful friend like Coco to show off to? Just a thought . . . . If you asked the folks who watch CITR to keep an eye open for likely candidates, I’ll bet you’ll find one in no time!

This news made my day πŸ™‚ May Coco heal fast and well.

Re. the “critter crossing” signs folks suggested earlier– we have one at the bottom of our drive that reads “Old dog, young dog, several stupid dogs–Please drive slowly.” Describes our canines to a T!
