I haven’t gotten to spend quite as much time as I’d like out in the pasture taking pictures of the visiting Dexter bull because I’m still taking it easy with my hurt knee, but we took some feed out there a couple days ago and made friends with him so I could get a few shots.
He was courting the girls down in the shady creek bottom when we interrupted them.
They all came a-runnin’.
He’s still a little shy, and sometimes I think he doesn’t know what (or who) to do first, but he’s made friends with all the girls.
So far, I can hardly get him to look at me! But I’ll keep trying. He’s going to be here for a few months. He’s mostly been splitting his attention between Dumplin and Moon Pie, so I suspect one or the other of them will be coming in first. He hasn’t paid much attention at all to Glory Bee, so I felt safe to go ahead and separate her for the next week while I’ll be milking twice a day getting ready for the two-day cheesemaking retreat coming up starting July 9.
Maybe he’ll miss her by then and pay her some attention!
I’m afraid she’s starting to get a complex!

Word to the wise from a farm guy – bulls are not pets. They are not ‘friendly’. They are very dangerous animals, especially when they are ‘on the job.’ Please don’t think this one is different. Bulls are dangerous, territorial, brutal animals. Stories about folks brutalized by their ‘bottle raised’ bull ‘friends’ and ‘pets’ are not hard to find. Where you might think of this bull as friendly and harmless, he is seeing you as someone who is no challenge and in his territory. Be careful, and let him do his work, but don’t turn your back on him!

Maybe we need to get Glory Bee a bit of lip gloss and perfum,, but then again he maybe just playing coy, I just bet he has his eye on Glory Bee, maybe just doesnt know what to say to her. 😉

We had a bull we called Friendly-for a reason- he got my dh down on the ground and played with him until he was muddy all over. When we sold him he walked right into the trailer and back out every time my DH went in and out. I told him to give me the bucket of grain he had been using and got it and went into the trailer before the bull, he closed the door and I dropped the bucket of grain and went over the top of the trailer.(Never thinking the bull would try to go over the top). We got him loaded and as we drove he tried to get out of the trailer over the top. We had quite a time getting 36 miles. When we got him delivered our nephew who bought him he was out working in the field by the fence and Friendly came up behind him and pushed him into the ground. He got up and called the butcher. Bulls are NOT TO BE PLAYED WITH.
We have one now that we HAD TO GENTLE when we got him and as we did he decided he has to be scratched on the neck when the water trough is being filled. I stand behind the fence or put a cow between him and me. Bulls are NOT TO BE TRUSTED.
