Morning at the Chicken House

One of my favorite things to do these days is to let the chickens (and ducks) out of the chicken house in the morning. They surge from the house with unparalleled exuberance. It’s a new day! They’re just happy to be alive! They burst into the warm dewy morning, eager to flap their wings and find the day’s adventures.

They make my day, every day, with this, their joyful morning rush upon the world:

I feel the same way about my geese. They LOVE coming out of the barn in the morning. If I let the chickens out before them they start fussing at me! As soon as they waddle out of the barn and into the back yard they do their morning “stretch and run”, flapping their wings as they run across the yard. It is so much fun to watch. 🙂

I got my morning farm fix!

Happy first day of school to all–and peace and quiet for the parents who get to stay home! LOL

  3. Lisa says:

Lol, your mornings are sure different than mine! When that door opens, there’s at least one bird who flies directly at my head!

  4. shirley says:

That’s how I act when I have money to spend at WalMart. :snoopy: :shimmy: :woof: :duck: :fairy: :dancingmonster:

  5. KateS says:

I loooooove  the way your place sounds.
one of my goals -to hear those sounds every morning.

  6. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

    LOL @ Shirley!

My chickens love their morning “out of jail” time too.

  7. Karen says:

How come the chickens and ducks know how to dot? That’s so funny, they greet the day with such exuberance!

Go forth, little fowl. Eat bugs!

  8. Bren says:

How do you get them all to come back i at night? I’m new to the whole chicken thing!

  9. Bren says:

Opps. Type o….How do get the chickens back in at night? I seem to have lost my ability to both spell and type. Sorry.

  10. Miss Becky says:

Oh, Suzanne, you have the best life evah! Those chickens love to fly the coop in the morning. Thanks for giving me a taste of rural life first thing in my day. :airkiss:

  11. Wheezay says:

Love..love..love that video ! :chicken:

  12. Bev says:

We should all take a lesson from the chickens and be HAPPY to have a chance at another day….good for them

  13. Christine says:

Yep, sounds just like our place. I love it when they all try to get out the door at the same time and get stuck. Too funny.

  14. Deanna says:

Loved the video, the cacaphony of sounds were music, I live in the city and perhaps what moved me most was the silence underlying the symphony.

  15. Jo says:

Oh, that is so cute! I love the sounds too! I can hardly wait ’til I have my own chickens…..waiting ’til next spring. :sheepjump:

  16. .Nancy in Iowa says:

That video was the best – it really made me smile, and Emma (the cat) is sitting on the shelf over my monitor looking a little wide-eyed at the sounds. Your chickens look like a bunch of kids when school lets out for the summer – except for the flying! But, then, they could be Hogwart students!! :chicken: :chicken: :chicken:

  17. Meg60 says:

Man, oh, man! As a southern California native, how I love West Virginia! The video instantly transports me to my daughter’s farm up in Tyler County. Same GREEN!…the filtered sunlight throught the trees…the scent of damp grass. I can just feel that mild West Virginia humid early morning sun. I love hearing all the animals, and the bugs buzzing away in the background. You people out there are blest! West Virginia is magical. Thanks for posting the video!

Sadly, my kids sold the farm to a natural gas developer 😥 Very profitable – they reserved the mineral rights – but we’ll never get to rock on the enchanted front porch again. And probably no-one else will ever want to, with all the gas wells and the trucks.

  18. trish says:

I loved the video too. I had no idea a farm was soo noisy. It was really great. Was that Coco barking in the background? It definetly sounded like a big dog barking. The flying cracked me up as well. You sure do have the life. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all.

  19. Grace says:

I can’t believe how noisy it is at your place. I live in the 5th largest city in BC and it is so quiet here compared to your place. Nice sounds, though. Give Clover a hug for me.

  20. monica says:

They dot just like sheep are supposed too! If they haven’t figured it out yet, the chickens could make some extra money on the side.

  21. Terry says:

Hey Suzanne, Loved your video. My “girls” can’t be let out as we live inside the city limits, but I move their pen every day or three, so they have fresh grass. I gathered my first egg the other day. My sister gifted me 7 hens and a rooster this summer. The grandkids are enjoying them so much. We have a chair near the pen so we can watch them. I also made Grandmother bread in the bread machine last nite. I don’t think I will be sharing very much of it,LOL. Take care and have a great day,
    Terry

  22. becki says:

How many chickens do you have now?

Since your oldest graduated, does that mean you have to take both kids to school?

My house cat has taken to going on the back porch with me early in the am. While she was minding her own business taking a morning nap in the sun, a mocking bird swooped down and attacked HER. The bird is fine, our cat has a bird-beak puncture on her neck. Ugly.

  23. Carol Ann says:

My dogs LOVED hearing your morning sounds! I live in the West Virginia countryside as well, but we don’t have chickens. We also gave your dog an answering retort! Did you hear it??? :woof:

  24. sarah w says:

awwwe happy chickens. it”s things like this that make me smile.

i want to have chickens and goats in the near future.

thank you for writing all of this.

  25. catslady says:

Loved it!! As an aside: one of my daughter’s friends just had a baby girl the other day and guess what they named her?? guess?? ANNABELLE!!!!! I am still laughing. Besides your Annabelle, I know someone with a cat by that name. What were they thinking

  26. sondra says:

Chickens are such interesting little things! I sure miss having a few to care for. A friend of ours had a neighbor that had several dozen chickens. Every afternoon, when he would go out to feed the chickens, he would go into his small barn and the chickens would run around the barn until he came out. They never went into the barn, just ran around and around. It was always so fun to watch!

    I enjoy your posts!

  27. cranberry says:

Just wonderful – when i’m an old lady i’ll be doin’ this!Gotta get out of the subdivision first! ugh!

  28. Estella says:

They are definitely ready to spread their wings!

  29. Maggie says:

Becki, I think you cat was lucky that is all that happened, poor baby. Last summer I was hanging out on the padio with my dog and cat when a hawk swooped down aiming for my cat. She made a dash to hide behind some pallets that we had up against the garage. Meanwhile the hawk landed in the nearest tree and watched her intently while he planned his supper. I grabbed her and did my best to cover her and put her back out side. I haven’t alowed her outside since.
I just Love the symphony of county sounds. Just wonderful.

  30. Maggie says:

Opps, I put her back inside, safe and sound from mr hawk.

  31. ML says:

That was great! It was like morning rush hour complete with honking (aka clucking). Thanks for sharing!

  32. Barbee' says:

Thank you! Thank you! for the video!!! Coco surely has her “big dog” voice, now.

  33. The Retired One says:

I registered some time ago, but it acted like the registration was rejected. I just tried again and it said I was already registered?
Can you check for me that I am indeed on the list to get the newsletter? I really would love getting it.
    Thanks so much!
    Joan (The Retired One)

  34. Di says:

Well, where did they all go, and when do they come home? LOL Seriously, where did they go?

  35. Gerry says:

I love your pictures and videos–just discovered your website today! Years ago we had chickens, turkeys and rabbits and we enjoyed them so much. Unfortunately we now live in a place with restrictions against any animal other than dogs and cats. Now I can enjoy the chickens and roosters through your site! Thanks so much for sharing.

  36. Tina says:

I am watching your video from my son’s hospital room. I can’t be home to share the “morning rush” with my own girls so this will have to fill the void until I can. Thanks
