Mr. Pibb Goes to Stringtown Rising Farm

Jan
5

We set off in the snow to fetch Mr. Pibb on Sunday morning. If it had been up to my driving ability alone, we would have been snow-bound. The road scares me when it’s covered like this. No snow plows come down our road. No salt, no cinders, no help. Except for 52, who did the driving. Or else I would have never gotten off the farm to fetch Mr. Pibb on Sunday.
IMG_0290
This is the part of the road I call “the scary part” even though it’s all scary sometimes.
IMG_0268
(Excuse these photos taken through a wet windshield.) See how narrow it is and how the ground drops off steeply right at the side of the road? Sliding on ice would be a bad idea here.
IMG_0269
But Mr. Pibb was waiting for us! We couldn’t let him down. And things were okay once we were on the interstate.
IMG_0363
We were originally due to pick up Mr. Pibb a couple of weeks ago, but the big snowstorm got in the way. As a result, Mr. Pibb made a layover in Virginia where another fainting goat had been delivered at that same time. We got there as soon as we could and saved him from the gang of chickens persecuting him in their hen house.
IMG_0385
I’m just kidding. The only thing scary on that farm was this Boer-cross goat.
IMG_0370
Who reminded me of this one of our Jacob sheep.
img_18271
No wonder Mr. Pibb was in the hen house! I bundled him up with a big, thick towel and sat him beside me in the truck.
IMG_0411
There and back (11-hour round trip), I crocheted two dishcloths with pretty ruffly edges.
IMG_0362
I tried to teach Mr. Pibb to crochet….
IMG_0428
….but all he wanted to do was snuggle.
IMG_0414
It was late, long after dark, when we got him home. We put him in the goat pen with just Fanta and Sprite for company. They slept in the dog house together. Though when I went down in the morning to check on Mr. Pibb, he was nowhere to be found. I thought, oh no, Fanta and Sprite ATE HIM! They looked pretty guilty, and he IS little! You know goats will eat anything!
IMG_0455
Turns out he was hiding at the back of the dog house behind them. He didn’t want to come out. Really, nobody wanted to come out yesterday and the chickens wondered why I made them come out.
IMG_0508
The goats and Poky took Mr. Pibb’s arrival well. No fussing. They understand he’s just a wee thing. Clover will wait till he’s a bit older before she beats him up and puts him in his proper place. She’s patient like that. Mr. Pibb did emerge from hiding a few times during the day, mostly to run back and forth between the goat house and the dog house in the goat pen, and once or twice to eat.
IMG_0509
He watched from afar when I broke out the Christmas ornament cookies.
IMG_0503
Wouldn’t take one step near a cookie.
IMG_0480
It snowed all day yesterday. Non-stop. This is the fifth winter I’ve lived in West Virginia and it has snowed more already this winter than the last four winters combined and I thought it was a lot of snow before. I’ve never lived anywhere that it snowed more than like once a year and then just a little bit.
IMG_0499
It’s supposed to snow all week.
IMG_0498
I’m gonna stay put and keep house.
IMG_0484
And talk Mr. Pibb into a cookie. Sprite and Fanta wouldn’t take cookies when they first got here either. But they do now.
IMG_0495
I know your kind, Mr. Pibb.
IMG_0505
I’ll win you over to the dark side. Don’t worry, we have candy sprinkles here.

Hi Suzanne! I’ll definitely be voting for you! This may sound like a dumb question, but what do you have the goats and sheep for? Milk? Wool? Pets only? I’m just curious. I have a pretty good sized pen outback. Can goats & sheep be in a pen together? How much room do they need? Thanks!

  2. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

Am I first? Can’t sleep tonight so I thought I would see if your post was up yet. You never let me down! Mr. Pibb is absolutely adorable as well as the rest of your little herd!

    (BBB)

  3. Gen says:

  4. Barbee' says:

He is so adorable!! Glad you made that run safely.

yup.. that sure does look like a west virginia road to me… and yes, i’d stay home too if it was snowy… hehehe. Doesn’t 52 have a single brother, or cousin, or great uncle or somethin’? i need me a man like that ::laughing::

  9. lisab says:

Isnt he just adorable !!!! I bet you can win him to the ‘cookie side” soon. I would be scared of the drive to the main rd too… You are way braver than I am… So far we have had cold and not alot of snow here in KY. BBB

  10. Connie Trippett says:

He is adorable. It is funny how it takes time for them to get used to the new surroundings but, when he does, he will be right there waiting for the cookies with the others.

    BBB

  11. Laura in Greenwood, IN says:

My cousin had a goat when we were young. It’s name was Firecracker and it’s name suited it. It was the meanest animal I know of. It would chase us and hit us with it’s little horns. :devil2: Mr. Pibb, however, looks very sane. You should be OK! :purpleflower: BBB!!!

  12. Maureen says:

Mr. Pibb is a cutie and all the pictures were adorable. I hope it stops snowing because that road is scary. BBB

  13. Granny Trace says:

How sweet Mr.Pibb is a snuggler..I love snugglers!! What a great day 11 hour road trip with 52,Mr.Pibb and yarn!! Sounds like a great day to me!!And your picture is beautiful. Have a great day!

  14. Runningtrails says:

    BBB

  18. NorthCountryGirl says:

Good morning! Mr. Pibb is a sweety. Won’t be too long before he’s one of the gang…eating cookies with the others. Welcome, Mr. Pibb.

  19. Shelley (eastern Roane County) says:

Congratulations on getting Mr. Pibb Home safely. He’s adorable. Would love to meet your fainters one day. What is their size relative to the Nigies and do they get along well?

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

Shelley, we haven’t had a full-grown fainter yet so I can’t compare, but the fainters are smaller than the standard size goat, so I’m expecting them to not be much bigger than the Nigerians. We’ll see in a year when we get some full-grown! Sprite and Fanta are still just big babies.

  20. CindyP says:

    LOVE THE NEW PIC!

And I would be a winter hermit living on those roads, and the kids would be homeschooled until spring break — they could make their own sports up! 😆 I’m from an area where I have seen horrible horrible winters, but it’s flat, I might go in the ditch, but it’s no cliff! Yikes!

BBB!!! Thank you Barefoot Chef!! I LOVE Lady Eudora!

  21. JOJO says:

    :snowman: :woof: :snowman:
Mr. Pibb is just a lovey dovey, just the look on his face in the car when he looked up at you, it was as if he was saying,”I am so glad I am here with you and I love you very much.” He will soom get the hang of cookie time.
I am afraid if I had animals such as your, I would never get anthing done! I would just want to be around them too much of the the time. When we are out in the car and drive by animals I always just want to stop and hug them, I know–Hubby thinks I am a bit daft too!
We are having snow just about every day here in this part of Ohio but not like you are having in WV. We have family there also and it has been difficult for them as well. That strech of road is so scary, I dont know how anyone can drive it, I would be hanging on to the bushes etc, even if I was walking on it on a sunny day. I thing you need a helicopter. Scares Me!! Thank goodness for 52.
    Stay safe.

    JO
PS–Suzanne, could you do a post on making bagels? I went into the city yesterday, and the shop where I buy bagels is now up to $10 a dozen, that is too much for me. I love real bagels, not the kind you buy in the bread section of the super market.
    JO

  22. Nancy in Iowa says:

First, that road is really scary! If I had to travel that in the winter, I just wouldn’t. I’d be housebound!
Second and most importantly, Mr. Pibb is adorable. I would love to have a little goat snuggle on my lap for a day!
:sun: :happyflower: You need a goat icon!!!

  23. Diane says:

Mr Pipp is so cute. I could cuddle him.

Here in PA its been snowing since last week too. I am ready to be done with it all. No school yesterday and so far today a 2hr delay. I am so ready for life to get back to normal. But if there is no school today again I will also be keeping house for a bit. But I can get out and will later. I know I could not live in a place that I would be snowed in for days. Just cant do it. nope.

Would love the BBB!!!! Looking forward to learning to can this summer and fall.

  24. Carmen Smith says:

Mr Pibb is SOooooo cute!!!! I’m sure he’ll be taking cookies in no time at all once the others tell him how delicious they are:)

  25. Patty says:

he’s a cutie!….I’d be staying put too & we have had more snow than even to here in OK…I’m ready for SPRING!!!(BBB)

  26. skippymom says:

When I went to scroll up to see the new pic’ I was thinkng “Hey, I like the old one. Why a new one?” Then I saw the new one and um….are you sure you changed the pic’? It looks exactly the same [to me anyway] You are quite lovely but I have to agree – I, too, hate having my pic’ taken. The kids, the husband and the dogs are just so much more photogenic I think.

Mr. Pipp is a cutie. I love him on your lap. 🙂 and the dishtowels are adorable. I want to learn how to do this…argh.

Sorry about the snow. Hopefully after this week it will be the end of it. At least you are all stocked up. Enjoy.

  27. callista says:

hes too cute!! i love the way hes smiling in all of his pics.

suzanne can you post the pattern you used for that crocheted dishcloth? i cant knit to save my life and the one you made looks adorable 🙂 pretty please with cherries on top??

  34. Joycee says:

What a cutie! I’ve been talking about you again on my blog…you just have so much to share on here!

  35. Chic says:

Mr Pibb is adorable!!! I bet he’s out and about in no time at all. If I was still living in British Columbia and driving my big old truck I’d be fine driving your roads…but now that I’ve lived in Kansas for 10 years I’ve become a sissy! I’d love a BBB book!!!! :hungry2:

Mr. Pibb will be a handsome fella’. I thought your other picture was fine. Sure we can tell how the children developed their shyness. So many things to be passed on from a parent. I opt for shy, good, honest, loving, humorous, and smart, just any day! Please BBB me.

Please enter me in the BBB drawing. Thank you.

  71. UlrikeDG says:

    Awww. He’s so tiny!

I hear you on this year’s strange weather. Normally we have snow, but it melts in between storms, and the worst of it doesn’t hit until after the New Year. This year, no melting, just snow on top of snow on top of snow.

    BBB, please.

  72. Patty says:

I would love one of the books! Mr Pibb is so CUTE!!

  73. Miss Becky says:

wow, that road looks treacherous; I would be a white-knuckle driver on that in the winter for sure. Mr. Pibb is so so adorable, I can’t wait to see the photo of him eating his first cookie! I also love the photo of the Boer-cross goat. Wow, what a cutie! I hope Mr. Pibb adjusts to his surroundings real soon, he’s a keeper I tell you!

  74. Miss Becky says:

Mr. Pibb is just too cute. I’m so wanting goats right now! Gotta get my chickens first, though.

I’ll be voting for you in the contest. Just gotta figure out the other two blogs to nominate. Yours is the only one I return to again and again.

    BBB

  76. Phyllis Wilson says:

Suzanne, BECAUSE OF YOU I have pigs, BECAUSE OF YOU I have chickens and fresh eggs everyday, BECAUSE OF YOU I have two loaves of fresh Grandmother Bread sitting on my counter top right now, BECAUSE OF YOU my family has been eating very delicious ‘made from scratch’ meals including desserts, and loving it! BECAUSE OF YOU I WANT ONE OF THOSE GOATS!! AND BECAUSE OF YOU I REALLY WANT THE BBB!!! OMG, I WANT TO BE YOU !!!! LOL

  77. Melanie says:

I would like a BBB please! Love the blog Suzanne. Still my favorite! : )

Mr. Pibb is freaking adorable1 What a perfect addition to the farm.

  82. Flatlander says:

Your brave to get another male.
After loosing 3 of ours..I gave up.

BBB day again?? please put my name in 😉

  83. Valerie says:

Mr Pibb is just too adorable. And he’s a snuggler to boot, that’s wonderful. My donkey babies don’t eat cookies til they are about 6 months old, it’s like they know it isn’t right to eat them, or their system isn’t ready for them. Once they make it to about 7 months, they line up at the fence, just like your animals do. I just adore the pics of the goats, dog and donkey getting their gingerbread men.

  84. NorthCountryGirl says:

I don’t think I would be brave enough to drive on that driveway. Looks mighty narrow in spots. I have to tell you. I just made your home-made Hamburger Helper using the chili mac recipe. I used less chili powder because my husband gets heartburn, but I also substituted a bit of Curry powder. Was that ever good!!! Thank you so much for coming up with that. I want to stock up on Baggies so I can make a bunch of batches up. It was really good. Definitely a “no leftovers” meal. Thanks again!! Please put me in for BBB. Have a great day!

  85. mommafox says:

That road looks some we travel on when we visit West Virginia. Big difference–we visit in August :sun: The ones that are twisty, turny, I call kiss your b—t turns. Being an Iowa born and raised girl, I didn’t see any of these roads until I married DH. Glad you made it there and back with your precious cargo. Put me in the draw for the BBB.

  86. NorthCountryGirl says:

Suzanne: Just wanted to let you know I voted for three blogs (yours included) AND I also voted for you for Blogger of the Year. I entered it. It accepted it. I then verified it and it went through. I didn’t know if others knew you can also nominate Blogger of the Year besides your three entries. Good luck!

  87. WvSky says:

We are FINALLY experiencing a typical West Virginia Winter! It used to be like this pretty much every year. Then, along 1993, things changed. It stayed warmer in the winter. I knew this year would be a doozey because of the bird actions back in Oct. (the week of Oct 12th to be exact).

As far as your new photo: MUCH better than the old one!

  88. Estella says:

    Mr Pibb is so cute!

  89. Lynn says:

    What a cute little guy!

  90. carol bellamy says:

Love the pictures and the little one. It is so cute!
Please put me in for the BBB.

    Thanks

  91. Pastor kathy says:

I LOVE Mr. Pibb and will be praying for his well-being and safety whilst being initiated by Clover!

I have not made a comment before, but I want to let you know that I voted for you every day through the previous contest and am one of your most devoted “lurkers.” I drove through your area at Christmas time and my, what a lot of snow!

I am a knitter, but am determined to learn to crochet this year. Would you consider sharing your pot holder pattern on the blog? It looks like a good one to start with.

Blessings to you and your family, and stay warm!

  92. Billy says:

BBB for ME ME ME! Welcome home Mr. Pibb

  93. Sharon Gosney says:

Mr.Pibb ia adorable….glad to see the girls like him. Enter me for BBB, thanks.

  94. princessvanessa says:

What category should I nominate you on? I want to be on the same page as all the other nominators. Help, help.

    Vanessa

    • Suzanne McMinn says:

Vanessa, most people have told me they nominated me in multiple categories–the ones I listed in the post (Best Photography, Best Writing, Best Food, Best Humorous). Some also told me they nominated also in Best of the Year. If you nominate in multiple, it will give me the best shot. Thank you!!

  95. Sandra says:

Suzanne, loved the pics today. I don’t see how you get anything done around there with so many cuties to play with.
Oh, and I would love to be entered in the BBB.

  96. marymac says:

AWWWWW, Mr. Pibb is so cute. it makes me want a goat that much more!!! You wouldn’t consider adopting a 62 year old woman would you? Your life sounds so interesting. BBB

  97. RosieJo says:

I love to read your blog and enjoy it every day, but there is no way I would ever live where I might have to drive on a road like your in conditions like those! Ever!! That is one cute little goat you’ve got there.

  98. Sheila says:

    Good Evening Suzanne,
I love your blog, have been reading it for a few months now.

I grew up in the country and our family always had a variety of animals. Only remember having a baby goat for a very short time, but remember bringing him into our kitchen and feeding him milk from a baby bottle. Your stories bring back so many good memories of living in the country.

Can’t wait to hear & see how Mr. Pibbs blossoms!
    Sheila

  99. debbie says:

Gosh, Mr.Pibb looks so cute and shy. Please don’t let Clover be too rough on him.

I live in town and hate to leave the house in the winter. It would only be the chance to bring home a goat that would get me down that road in the winter. Bless 52 and his driving abilities.

Am I the only one who thought Suzanne’s old photo looked a little like Martha Stewart? This one looks (I’m assuming, going by your film)more like you.

Going now to see if I can figure out that voting thing. BBB, please.

I would like the BBB and a goat, but the hubby says no goats. We already have dogs, cats and horses. My neighbors have chickens so I get those great fresh free range eggs. Can’t beat em.

Thank you, Suzanne, for steering me to the “right”, or should I say “write”, categories. I used my 3 e-mail accounts and nominated you in multiples.

If I had paid better attention I would have seen, for myself, that I could nominate for a multiple of categories. Perhaps I can join your “staff”, as I do tend to run around ‘like a chicken with “shh” my head cut off’. Hope they didn’t hear me down in youe hen-yard.

Welcome Mr. Pibbs! You are a woman of great wisdom and restraint. I’d be SO tempted to make him a house goat.

Can you please post the pattern for your dishcloth? It is lovely!

    Thanks,
    V

With all that snow, I’d stay home and keep house too! Mr. Pibb is so sweet. I;m glad you got him home safe and sound. Please include me in the give away for the BBB. Thanks

Awww, Mr. Pibb is such a grownup name for such a small fellow, but he’ll grow into it!
I’d love to win the BBB.
And for ONCE I made it on time!
