Riding

This weekend, I went to Soggy Bottom Farm and rode the trails with Sheila on my old friend, Sierra.

We rode out around the pasture, past the other horses.

Then onward to the steep trails.

Steep trails are a challenge to my balance. Sierra is a good “robot” horse, though, and she always makes me feel safe. The only thing she likes to do is try to turn back to the barn at every opportunity, but don’t they all.

If you don’t remember, Sheila is the wife of Mike Trader.

She kindly offered for me to come out and ride more often, which I think I will! I need the practice and it was good to have a friend to ride with. I haven’t ridden since early December. I was SORE the next day! Now that the weather is changing, I am so ready to get my Shortcake out and take her on my own trails. I need more riding practice to become more confident, and I want to get more of that practice on Shortcake here on my farm. I’ve been wishing I could get someone to come give me riding lessons right here, and it occurred to me that my hired man, Adam, is an experienced horseman so I may offer him the job.

Sometimes I try something new, and just trying it is enough. I’m always curious to learn about new things, tackle new adventures. But this horse thing……

It’s here to stay.

Sierra will not be successful as a punk rocker until she adds some color to that mohawk. Perhaps ROYGBIV?

I’ve often heard that horseback riding is good exercise. Suzanne, you mention how sore you are. I don’t know what muscles you use when riding. I’ve never ridden a horse. Maybe you could tell me, or a reader. I’ve learned so much from your blog. Thank you for sharing!

I hope that Sheila is doing OK. I know it must be difficult adjusting to a new life without her husband. Please let her know that your readers are thinking about her.

Also, is there ANYTHING that your hired man Adam CAN’T do? I am so impressed with him.

I am glad that you and Sheila can ride together.. What better way to continue Mike’s teachings and honor his memory by continuing and applying what you’ve learned. Plus… It’s FUN!

I’m so glad that you went riding with Sheila. Both of you need the friendship. Please let her know that we do think of her.

Yeah, so is there anything Adam can’t do?? Does he cook and do laundry, too?

    Granma2girls–
You use ALL your muscles when you ride! Doing it well is a fabulous workout. It’s great cardio as well–try working a horse at the canter!
Consistent lessons from someone who’s experienced are the best way to get started. Not only will your strength, riding ability, seat (the ability to stay properly positioned in the saddle at all gaits) improve; but you’ll enjoy trailriding more and feel safer doing it because you’ve built a solid horsemanship foundation. Enjoy!

Kdubbs- thank you for your response.. I guess sitting on a moving horse must require a certain amount of muscle if you’re trying to maintain balance. Not like sitting astride a chair. I’m a town girl and have only been near horses once and I was terrified of them.

Good for you, and you have such beautiful country in which to ride.
