Thar She Blows

I was out a good bit yesterday. We checked on Beulah Petunia a couple times in the morning. Then we were all gone. She’d been standing near the gate by the road when I left. She was still standing near the gate by the road when I came back. About an hour later, I checked on her again and she had moved to the back of the pasture. We’d closed off the far field so she couldn’t move too much out of view. Next check she’d moved across the creek. An hour later, next check, THERE WAS A BABY.

Obviously, she had no trouble with the birth and accomplished it pretty quickly all by herself. (We brought her water with molasses right after, thank you for the tip.) She was licking her baby, and the baby was already trying to stand and rooting for its food source. Mostly we let BP have her space, but I petted the (wet) baby a little bit and let it smell my fingers. I want this baby to get to know me and love me.

THIS BABY IS A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baby, working on standing.

Seriously, that baby was in BP? And it came out that little hole? And it has hooves and everything!!!!

I can’t even describe what it’s like to see and touch a newborn calf. It was just amazing. I will be back with good daylight pictures this morning as soon as I can. (It was hard to take pictures last night!) And also back with the winner as soon as I track down who was closest!

I’ve been lying awake thinking of your beautiful calf! You wanted a girl so badly that I thought of Thankful as a name, then gave up on sleeping, came to the computer and googled Puritan names. There it was – Thankful!!!

That’s wonderful; an easy delivery and a heifer to boot.

Of course a bull would have meant meat in the freezer. The best we every raised was a Jersey bull left on Momma’s milk until almost the end.

You just can’t go wrong with a calf IMO.

I’m gonna be smiling all day thinking about your little calf. Congratulations. :cowsleep:
