The Boom Has Left the Building

Mar
31

It’s almost two years ago now since Ross brought Boomer home from the parking lot at McDonald’s.
img_91041
Ross was a senior in high school then, engaged in his pre-Navy fast food career, and Boomer had been hanging around the McDonald’s parking lot for days. They’d been feeding him French fries. Eventually, Ross brought him home and said, “Happy Mother’s Day.”

We named him Spot. Because, of course, he was staying. Or, we wanted him to stay, but he had other ideas. He promptly ran off. We were lucky enough to get him back a few days later.
img_9274121
He was renamed Boomerang, aka Boomer, aka Boom Boom, the Boom, and assorted other endearments. Most often, he was simply known as The Supervisor. He was on-site for every farm task, large or small. He wouldn’t miss a milking for the world.

He thought he was as big as anyone, and would frequently harass the sheep and the donkeys and even Beulah Petunia. He’d eat a cookie right out of Clover’s mouth.

Some more favorite Boomer photos:

IMG_8072

He was a travelin’ man, which caused all kinds of trouble. He would follow us down the road for two miles until we’d have to pick him up. He always threw up in the car.

He was a little terrier-type tyke and could get out of anything you tried to put him in.
IMG_6195
Because he was such a travelin’ man, I was hoping some happier ending to this story might come about, but Boomer has been missing for weeks now. We have looked and talked to friends and neighbors and called the pound and everything we can think of, but there’s no Boomer. At the time he disappeared, we had high water and flooding conditions. I wondered if he’d gone across the river ford and couldn’t get back. But the water went down and there was still no Boomer. The same week Boomer disappeared, both of our new lambs disappeared. We wondered if the lambs had been stolen, but a few days ago, Coco brought us one of the lambs out of the woods. Or, what was left of it. The lambs were stolen, but not by something on two legs. We do have foxes here and have seen them on our farm. We’ve never seen a coyote, but they are in the area. Around this same time, a neighbor from a farm a few miles away told us they saw a coyote run out of the woods in broad daylight and steal a chicken right in front of their eyes. It’s not the first time they’ve seen a coyote, and they had the wildlife service come out and set traps on their farm. The coyote population is increasing here, but we’ve never seen or heard a coyote on our farm. We know something came and got the lambs, but we don’t know that the same thing happened to Boomer. We only know that the disappearances were close together. From a farming perspective, the lambs were worth money. We were going to sell them. That is not to say that we don’t care about the lambs, but it is different. We hadn’t gotten to know them. Boomer was our buddy, and his value could never be counted in dollars.

And as much as I’d like to continue in the fantasy that he will boomerang back, Boomer knew his way home, and other than that one time when we first got him, he was never gone even 24 hours. He loved home. He loved his people and his Giant Puppy and his supervision of the farm. If Boomer could come home, he would be home. He has been gone too long.

When Coco and Casper walk down the road with us, there’s no Boomer leaping up and down trying to be as big as the big dogs. There’s no dairy supervisor in the milk stand. And Annabelle has no one to bounce around the hay shed with her anymore.

He was a good little dog and we loved him. Wherever he is, I hope he’s eating French fries.

πŸ˜₯ I’m sorry for the loss of your furry friend. This is very sad. I’ll miss Boomer. Hugs to you, and to Annabelle.

  4. KC Hobgood says:

I know exactly what you are saying. We have a coyote population here in south Louisiana as well. I have seen them crossing the streets in the evening right in he heart of town. I have lost 2 of my four pawed, furry kids to them. (both cats) I have a small dog also and he is a part of my family so we keep a closer eye on him now. My condolences on your loss.

  5. Mandy says:

Awww πŸ™ I was getting more and more anxious as I read this, reading everything in past tense…I’m so sorry for your loss. I hate the feeling of an animal going missing and not ever really knowing what happened πŸ™

  6. bRose says:

Ross brought him home and you and your family gave Boomer love and a happy life. You shared him with all of us and we fell in love with him, too. He will be missed.

A farm life is hard to live I think. Not like this is to hard of work, but hard life experiences. A lot of Love and prayers coming your way.

  9. NANCY H says:

I am really sorry for you. The not knowing what happened to him and when to give up hope of finding him must be very difficult. It hurts so much to loose a pet, I can not even begin to imagine what it must be like to loose a child. I am so happy that Boomer was loved and able to be a carefree, fun loving dog. You and your wonderful children gave him that.

  10. Lindsay says:

Oh Suzanne (and family of course)…I’m so, so sorry. I can’t say I won’t be praying for a miracle, that maybe some nice family did the same thing your Ross did, or that he won’t just come trotting home one day like nothing ever happened.

I’m sorry for the loss of the lambs of course, but as a pet owner I understand the feeling of not being able to find your furry friend. I wish I could give you guys a hug right now

  11. Snapper says:

    Awww….that stinks Suzanne, I’m sorry.

  12. Sonia says:

I will keep my fingers crossed that he will eventually come back home. He looks like a jack russel mix, and they are very resourceful, and when you give up, there they will be on your door step. I hope they same happens with you.

  13. MaryB says:

This is a real heart breaker. I am so sorry. Here’s holding out hope the lil guy makes his way home soon.

I’m so sorry about Boomer’s disappearance. It’s so hard when you just don’t know what happened. I’m also sorry about the loss of the lambs. I hope coyotes aren’t becoming a bigger problem in your end of the county.

  19. Johanna says:

So sorry for your loss. What a character Boomer was. Thanks for sharing so many wonderful stories about him.

  20. CindyP says:

So very sorry to hear this…both Boomer and the lambs. I hope nothing as tragic as a coyote happened to him and he’ll still coming trotting up the long winding driveway.

  21. Sharon Cave says:

Sorry to hear about the loss of Boomer (and the lambs).
Coyotes are becoming a major problem here in the east. Out west they were a lot less brave and a lot smaller.
I hope they stay far away in the future.

  22. Diane says:

This made me cry. Boomer was such a neat dog. He made his home with you. If can get back home he would. Sorry for your loss and the loss of the sheep as well.

  23. northcountrygirl says:

I knew as soon as I saw the past tense that something bad happened. I’m so sorry that he didn’t come back. When the kids were little and something bad happened to one of their pets, we would tell them that their pet went to “Puppy Heaven.” Take heart. IF something bad happened to Boomer, then he’s running free in the meadows of “Puppy Heaven” …probably chasing Mean Rooster.

  24. Anita says:

I am just so sorry and sad.

  25. wickedgoodshari says:

My thoughts are with you and your family. Poor Boomer.

  26. Mechele Armstrong says:

So sorry to read this. I always enjoyed Boomer stories. Sorry for your loss.

  27. Ellen McBryde says:

I am so very sorry for the loss of dear Boomer.

Country living can be very challenging for small dogs.
I lost my dear, sweet, Hurricane Katrina Survivor Pomeranian, Juba in October to the unknown.

My heart goes out to your and your family.

  28. Anke says:

I am so so sorry about Boomer. Loosing an animal is hard enough, but I think not knowing exactly what happened must be even worse.

  29. Deb says:

I’m so sorry, it’s hard to loose a fur baby! πŸ™

We lost a LOT of chickens last summer, they almost cleaned us out…I saw a coyote come up to within 15 feet of the house and grab one in the middle of the afternoon. They seem to be getting braver too darn things. We basically have to start over on our chickens this year. πŸ˜₯

  30. Nannette Turner says:

πŸ˜₯ Sorry to hear this. This past week I lost my four legged friend Puddin’. We miss her bunches. Rosie, her sister four legged friend, misses her too. Rosie follows me around everywhere now.
In our case we had a chance to say goodbye. I have had pets leave and never come back before. It is sad because you never really get a chance to say goodbye right? I’ll miss Boomer too.

  31. Marianne G says:

Oh Suzanne, this just broke my heart and made me cry. I’m so sorry about poor little Boomer.

  32. beverly says:

I’m sorry, Suzanne. It’s so sad to lose a pet you love, especially when they just disappear like that. But you gave him a good life. :happypuppy:

    Beverly

  33. Carol Langille says:

I’m so sorry, Suzanne. Losing a four legged member of the family is a hard thing. Traveling animals are especially suceptible to meeting with unknown ends…or new beginnings. Keep a light burning for him, Suzanne, if only in your heart. I certainly will.

  34. skippymom says:

I am truly, truly sorry that he hasn’t Boomeranged back. He really is a special little guy.

    Take care.

  35. Jennifer says:

I’m so sorry to hear about boomer & the lambs. It was probably a coyote that got the lambs, foxes won’t go after something bigger than them. We have a fox family that cuts thru our pasture. He (& the hawks) are the reason we don’t free range the chickens. I hate not knowing what happened to boomer… Wherever he is, I hope he has an endless supply of french fries!

  36. aprilejoi says:

I cried reading this post. My heart is broken for you but also for Boomer. You are right when you posted how he loved his home, he was happy at your farm and it showed in your photos and videos. I believe he is at Gods farm as all creatures have souls, and his was as beautiful as any. Thank you for opening your heart and your home to him and thank you for sharing him.

  37. Dianna says:

Fighting back tears, as are all of us who have ever loved and been loved by a pet.

Maybe, just maybe, someone else has given him a home. But it’s so sad not to KNOW for sure.

I know how difficult it must have been to write this post.
    Sending you a hug!

  38. Sheila says:

My heart breaks reading about Boomer. We live in a rural area, but not near as rural as you, we see Coyotes once in a while, but hear them almost every night. Our 1 yr old boxer is always on a leash we are so afraid a coyote may get her. If something dreadful has happen to Boomer he will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. But, hoping he finds his way home.

  39. Mary says:

I remember when Ross brought him to you for Mother’s Day…such a sweet spunky little dog, and how lucky was he to be brought into your family of people and animals. He had it good, and I am so sorry for your loss.

  40. kris morgan says:

I am so sorry for the loss of Boomer..he looks so much like my rat terrier Daisy. We have to watch out for coyotes, timber wolves and the occasional couger……the price we pay for living in the country I guess. I hope you find comfort in your memoriesof the wonderful little guy……….I will miss the Boomer stories.
    May G-d bless you

  41. 4jsMOM says:

I’m so sorry to hear about Boomer. I’ve had to put down several animals in old age and sickness, and that was hard. But not knowing exactly how Boomer met his fate, or even if he is still somewhere, is harder, I would think. But the memories of his adventures at the farm will always be with you, thank goodness.

  42. Joycee says:

The perils of country living, but sad nonetheless. If was picked up and taken a distance, he may be back. He won’t forget you or your family, that’s for sure! They add so much to our lives and vice versa.

  43. Beth Brown says:

Oh Suzanne – I am so sorry πŸ˜₯

I’m sure he is somewhere nibbling on french fries.

    Beth

  44. Carol Hesch says:

    sniff-sniff—–so sorry for you πŸ˜₯

  45. wildcat says:

Suzanne, so sorry for your loss! We will all miss Boomer. Such a sweet and funny little dog.

  46. Celia Allen says:

:woof: What a sad story and I’m so sorry you & your family are having to go through the loss of Boomer! It brought tears to my eyes reading it. The only “smile” part of the story was picture of Ross smiling and of course, the pictures of Boomer!
Keep the faith…perhaps he’ll wander back home ….boomerangs always come back, you see!

    Mrs. Turkey

  47. Myrna Mackenzie says:

Suzanne, I always loved your Boomer stories. He was such a personality and such a plucky little dog. If there are french fries to be had wherever he is, he’s probably got a supersized order (who could say no to that face)?

The coyote population has been increasing these past few years even here in the suburbs of Chicago (and even in the city itself). But maybe, if there was flooding when Boomer disappeared, that traveling man got carried down the river to a new McDonalds where he’s bringing joy to some child who just needed a Boomer in her life. And he’s telling her stories of this wonderful farm he once lived on where there were not only french fries but cookies…and she’s smiling and she needs him, so…how could he leave even if he really wants to go home? (Okay, that’s probably just me being naive, but…)

  48. brookdale says:

Oh Suzanne, I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Boomer! You wrote a wonderful tribute to him. Your family gave him a loving and happy home. It is never easy, is it, especially when you don’t know for sure what happened. But he will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge I am sure.

  49. Rys says:

I am so very sorry for your loss. (((HUGS))) !

  50. Elaine says:

I am so sorry Suzanne–for Boomer and the lambs. We here in Louisiana have problems with coyotes taking small livestock. I have friends who have lost an entire flock of chickens and geese, who were mostly pets, to a pack in their area. It’s hard. Hope you can get wildlife agents to help with that problem.

  51. Larssa says:

I am so sorry, Suzzane. I imagine he is eating french fries too.

  52. Lisabeth Olson says:

I’m sorry for you and Annabelle. I have lost those I loved also. My prayers are with you.

    I’m so, so sorry. πŸ™

  56. Kelly A says:

I’m very sorry for your loss.

When I was about 15 my cat, whom I had had since I was 2, was laboring for days it seemed to breathe. Then one day she decided to go outside, I watched her leave, jumped up to catch her, my mom told me she must be feeling better and to let her go.

She never came back, I firmly believe she went out in the woods to die. Maybe she felt it would be easier on me then finding her dead somewhere, I don’t know. But she isn’t the first pet that Ive heard of, that has done that.Maybe it was his time to go.

  57. Gigi says:

I know Boomer is happy wherever he is. His spirit lives on in all those who loved him…4 legged and two πŸ™‚

  58. Robin says:

I am so sorry! I am sitting here crying with you! I will miss all of the pictures and post about Boomer! I lost my yellow lab, Jake about 10 years ago and I still miss him. I almost cry every time I see a yellow lab!

  59. windspiritwhimsies says:

So sorry to hear Boomer is not home. Maybe he is just out sowing oats, it is spring after all. Don’t stop believing, he just might show up again! Hugs to you all!

  60. marymac says:

Can I just say , I think the idea of restocking those pesky coyotes was a big mistake from many points of view. Wether Bommer was taken by one or not they cause great losses to livestock and are populating in cities and suburbs around here. People have been attacked and many pets are killed by them. You have to be very vigilant when your pets are outside, for not many people expect their pets to encounter a coyote. Our wildlife programs aren’t always done for the best interest. Instead of helping to rid the pests, they are becoming one. there i said it. Thanks

  61. lilac wolf says:

I’m so sorry to hear that.

  62. LeAnn says:

Sorry to hear about “the supervisor”. That is one of the hard parts of having animals, but they bring us so much love and joy, it’s worth it. Boomer brought your family (and us, through CITR) much happiness. He was lucky to be loved by your family.

  63. texwisgirl says:

My heart goes out to all of you. Sweet little tyke…

  64. Deb Martin-Webster says:

What a beautiful tribute to an amazing little fellow! I raise a french fry in his honor!

  65. Miss Becky says:

oh shit. πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯   Please, not Boomer. I didn’t even want to finish reading this post. Through these past years, every photo you posted of him was more special even than the last. he’s my buddy, the doggie I don’t have and always wanted. I won’t believe he’s gone forever. this is breaking my heart. to see him flying over hill and over dale, his feet off the ground, well, that’s just about the best way to start the morning. I know this must be hard for you and your family Suzanne. my heart is simply broken. I know that’s a risk whenever I open my heart, and Boomer was just impossible not to love. may he rest in peace. but I’ll still always hope for the day when you post a new, recent photo of him………..after he’s returned to us…………

  66. Louise says:

I am so very sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a good friend like Boomer.Hugs to you and the family. (I should not have read this at work it made me cry.)

  67. Tammy B says:

We live in a highly coyote populated area and while it’s not totally unheard of they seldom attack dogs…..baby lambs would be a different story with the lambs being such timid creatures. We live in cattle country and there have been times when coyotes get calves.
We once had a red-healer that someone did steal, she was gone for over a month! We had given up hope on seeing her again when she came home….she was as happy to see us as we were to see her. She had lots of miles on her, skinny and very tired!
Bommer was lucky to have a family that loved him so much and I know the joy he brought to your lives!

  68. Dot says:

Pets aren’t just animals, they become part of your family. When they leave, they leave a hole; and no other pet will ever fill Boomer’s space in your hearts. We’re Christians, and can go on at length about animals and spirits and souls, but I’ll tell you what my very wise Mother told me as a child when I lost a beloved pet. No, animals don’t have eternal spirits like people do…but God promised there would be no sadness and no tears in Heaven. So when I get to Heaven, if I won’t be happy without my doggie, God will give him to me. From that perspective, Heaven must surely be filled with precious furry creatures…especially a french-fry munching supervisor named Boomer!

  69. Melinda says:

    I’m so sorry about Boomer.

  70. Wanda says:

I’m so so sorry to hear that Boomer is gone. I have enjoyed your stories about him & love his “peeing picture”
    Wanda

  71. Rose H says:

Oh, I’m so sorry Suzanne. Boomer seemed to be such a lovely little character, in the thick of all the goings on down on the farm. I know from expereience it’s always so much worse when you don’t ever really know what’s happened.
The video with Annabelle always makes me smile.
Where ever he is I’m sure he’ll be eating those french fries.

    Rose H

  72. Merlin says:

So sorry to hear about that. One of my first thoughts was that maybe he was defending the lambs from whatever, and he was overtaken. I’d like to think that maybe he was defending the lambs rather than be swept away in the river. Wherever he is, I’m sure he’s eating french fries!

  73. Carmen C. says:

I’m so sorry to hear this, he was a special dog for sure! I hope you find some comfort in the fact that he was REALLY happy on your farm:)

  74. Tammy says:

Boomer was my favorite of the dogs! I’m so sorry for your loss, Suzanne and family.

  75. Jen in VA says:

I am so sorry. Who is going to help Coco eat Casper’s head now? I know you all miss him very much. i’m sorry about the lambs too. I hope you have room for a coyote tail next to the raccoon one. Big hugs to all of you and Annabelle.

  76. Gini says:

TEARS. You gave sweet Boomer a dog’s heaven on earth and we all loved him with you. πŸ™

  77. Andrea Pierce says:

I’m so sorry for your loss! I love the picture of him peeing – it’s the perfect attitude picture.

  78. Cheryl says:

Im so sorry that boomer is missing πŸ™ Hopefully he’ll return. It wouldnt surprise me though if a brave little dog like him gave his life trying to fight the coyotes for the lambs though. Coyotes are awful. I hate them with a passion. We had a major problem with them 3 years ago and i lost 8 lambs and 2 kids before we finally got the last of them. It took our hunting them and the county agent trapping them to get all of the pack. And i have two a livestock guardian dogs and a guardian donkey! They killed my best replacement ewe lamb not 20 feet from where i was standing! And when i heard her scream and started running that way one of them even refused to leave her kill til i got about 5 feet away. I had the dogs with me even. She was so brave…but apparently not smart because she came back for her kill that night (the lamb was gutted. I had to go and get the gun to put her down) and my hubby was waiting in the tree with a rifle for her. My neighbor has lost 2 calfs so far this year to the coyotes and i see my dogs take off that way pretty often so i know they are trying to keep the coyotes off his land too but its just too much for them to handle.

  79. Cheryl says:

Dot.. i know that many religions teach that there are no animals in heaven..but have you seen the book by the boy that died and his account of going to heaven? He talks about the animals there. I think most of us that are animal lovers agree with your mom..it just wouldnt be heaven to us without animals.

  80. Lynette says:

I am so sorry. I will hug my furry baby a little closer tonight. Thank you for sharing Boomer’s story with us.

  81. Karo says:

Oh, Suzanne. When you have posted about animal losses before it has made me sad for you but this one makes me sad for me. I’ve never met Boomer in person but I just love that little guy. This one breaks my heart.

  82. Julaine Cabot says:

You gave Boomer a great home and he had a happy life with you. I’m sure he expressed his thanks many times. He gave all of us smiles through your posts. He will be missed, but I’m sure he doesn’t want us to sit around and stew about him for too long.

  83. MissyinWV says:

So sorry πŸ™ I will miss hearing about Boomers adventures!

  84. B, Ruth says:

    Suzanne,
So sorry about Boomer and the lambs….hopefully Boomer is somewhere and decides he likes CITR much better and will return…

That said…I would keep watch…you folks had a bad winter…and the cayotes are hungry..they are sly devils…We have had cats and small dogs taken in our area…Thankfully our neighbor is taking them down…checking each one in hopes it is the “Bitch”..it will take a while for them to return…If chickens are secured they will take anything that is loose..There range is at least 10 miles..and they get braver when they have young to feed..My neighbor gets in the barn loft…calls the cayotes in with a call and shoots them…he killed 9 in one span of three days! It is open season on cayotes here no limit..they are getting dangerous! I can’t stand to hear them yip and howl…it’s creepy!

  85. Julia says:

I’m so sorry. Not knowing can make the loss twice as bad.

  86. Erica in VA says:

Suzanne, I am so sorry for your loss! No matter what happens to my critters, I cry for every one of them when they are gone.

I have been volunteering with a dog rescue for quite some time, and through helping to track down a few lost foster dogs (not mine!), I found “Pure Gold Pet Trackers”. It is a lady and her two Golden Retrievers, that go out and follow the trail of a lost pet. This may or may not be something you are interested in, but it could, if nothing else, bring you some closure as to what happened to your Boomer. On a positive note, they were able to bring home every one of the pets they tracked for our rescue.

I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that your little guy will just show up out of the blue one day! But, perhaps he was just meant to be with you for a short time, and has moved on to whomever else needs him now. Life is funny that way sometimes. Hugs to you and yours!

  87. Merino Mama says:

I’m so sorry, Suzanne. Boomer was such a sweetie. I’m proud to have met him at your party last fall. It’s always the not knowing what happened that’s the worst part. I’ll hold out hope that he’ll come wandering back or that someone else say that adorable little dog and took him in. I’m also sorry about your lambs. Coyotes are bad at our farm. Something took one of our roosters in the middle of the day, and I’m almost certain it had to be a coyote (or a fox). It always send chills down my spine when I hear those things howling at night. We’ve been lucky so far with our sheep, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

  88. Julia says:

    Suzanne,
I am so sorry. I also hope he is eating french fries some where.

  89. Denise says:

    Tears. =(

SO sorry for your loss. He was well loved.

  90. Darlene says:

I’m so sorry to read this. My first thought was Boomer protecting his pals. He is such a big loss, we all loved his antics.

  91. tami says:

I lost 4 chickens to coyotes last year, and we live in a highly populated area and they came over a 6 foot fence. I am so sorry to hear about boomer, he reminds me of my little dog cha-chi. I know I would really miss him, I feel for you..

  92. Kristen E says:

I’m so sorry to hear about this. πŸ™ Boomer was a special little guy and he was clearly loved. Sending prayers your way.

  93. Bev says:

Poor Boomer. Its horrible to not know what has happened to a pet.
We have a large coyote population here in Co. and yes they do attack dogs.
Boomer looks like he was mostly Rat Terrier, which is the breed of my new puppy ,Buzz .
If Boomer was as feisty as a 8 week old Rat Terrier, you should know he put up a brave and valiant fight.
Or he could have been swept away by the rising river waters.
whatever happened, I feel your pain.
Yup Boomer is in dog heaven, probably playing with some of Anabelle’s relatives and havin him some french fries every day.

  94. Melissa says:

Oh man, waazer city. I’m so sorry to hear about Boomer and his possible fate. Hugs from colorado.

  95. Jessica says:

I am very sorry to hear Boomer is missing. πŸ™ We lost our little black cat for one month a few years ago. I thought for sure she was a goner and I laid awake most nights crying and praying she’d come home. She had never been outside before. Exactly one month after her disappearance I heard meowing and opened the front door and there she was. I couldn’t believe it! (We live in the Rocky Mountains and I was amazed (and thankful) she survived.) I hope Boomer is okay and comes home.

  96. Susan says:

Awww… I’m so sorry.. It really hurts to lose a valued member of the family.

  97. Blyss says:

Crying at my desk at work… so sorry for the disappearance of the greatest little dog… and the lambs too, of course. I too will keep a light in my heart for his return, and a french fry raised in his honor! *hugs*

  98. catslady says:

πŸ˜₯ I’m so sorry. I was already feeling sorry for myself because it’s the birthday of my beloved cat that passed away last year. It’s a weepy day all around.

  99. Jen says:

I am so sorry you’re having to go on without Boomer. I know just how it is to have a dog who does his own thing. They can be the most annoying pets but they are missed so much when they’re gone.

  100. Sheryl - Runningtrails says:

I am so sorry to hear this! I know very well what it is like to lose a much beloved furry family member! He will be missed and remembered!

  101. trish c says:

I am sending sympathy and hugs. I loved Boomer too!

  102. B, Ruth says:

One more thing, please don’t take the video off of Boomer and the sheep…I love watching it over and over…so cute, sweet and funny! I think I mentioned it once before!
If his body height and weight would’ve just met with his feigned ferocious behavior he would have been one to contend with in a fight with the end of the coyotes.
Boomer loved those sheep you can tell….and maybe he heard the commotion and ran down to the rescue…and got involved…Those are dastarly pack hunters coyotes….can’t stand them…
We watch our Shidtzu when we are outside with him…he is a small one…Our cat tells us when one is near before we hear them..His radar ears and a perked-up head lets us know!

  103. Bonnie says:

This same thing occured to the owner of a large dog, “Bo Dog”, on the blog “Life on a Southern Farm”. They live in north Georgia and I remember being so surprised as the dog was so large and just went missing overnight. I live in the suburbs of northern Florida and the coyotes are making a huge comeback. I am hoping that Boomer returns when you least expect it and the story has a happy ending!

  104. Laney says:

There are no words that I can say that haven’t already been said but I will tell you how sorry I am anyway πŸ™ The not knowing what happened is the worst. Been there and done that and still wonder what happened.
Sweet little Boomer lived the good life. And my guess is he didn’t go without a fight whether it be the river or a coyote that challenged him. He wouldn’t have it any other way, right?
Much love to you all, Suzanne. And you just never know… maybe he will show up in California and be cast in a McDonald’s commercial. Stranger things have happened.

  105. Lacey says:

I do NOT like this post! I was getting stressed reading it with you talking about him in the past tense and worried that it wouldn’t have a happy ending. So sad. I am very sorry. And I understand your distinction between Boomer and the lambs, both sad but in different ways and Boomer’s loss is more personal.

  106. Urbanite says:

I am so very sorry to hear the sad news about Boomer. He was adorable and so much fun to read about.

  107. Linda Goble says:

I am so sorry for your loss.Day before my husband and I were to get married coyotes killed my dog. My mom heard all the noise and then it was quiet. Down the road was a chicken farm after that they trap 8 coyotes. I sure do hope Boomer comes back home for you.Hugs.

  108. Amber says:

God Bless Boomer and the lambs.

  109. roosterrun says:

I’m sitting here in tears. I am so sorry for your loss. We lost my sons 13 year old cat for 22 days a few years ago. I called everyone, even people I don’t know well, and some said they had seen a cat with his description living down the road under an old house. I went and it was him but it took me a week of coaxing to get him out of there and back home with us. It is the not knowing that is the hard part of it all. I will keep you in my prayers and maybe he will come home. I hope so.
    Sandy

  110. Estella says:

    So sorry to hear this.

  111. morningstar says:

Oh Suzanne that is so sad, it is the not knowing that is the worst part of it all. He had a wonderful free life with you all and was a much loved and respected part of the family. Thinking of you and your family with love xx

  112. Yvonne says:

Makes me sad πŸ˜₯ and angry :hissyfit: at the same time. So sorry. :airkiss:

  113. Jim Noland says:

I’m so sorry. He will be missed. I will think of him the next time I have frys.
Coyotes are getting worse, around the whole country. And they are gettig more brazen also. People also need to be more alert when out doors. Carry a good stick, or cane when out and about, on the farm or just out for a walk. Coyotes do not have to have rabies, to take on people. Years ago, they never hunted in packs. Like they do now. They also don’t seem as afraid of people like they use to be. So for those that live in the country, if need be, pack some heat if you need to. and don’t be afraid to use it. Also if you have small children, keep an eye on them. Coyotes have been known to take after little kids playing. So be safe.
And Boomer is watching over you and the farm, where ever he is.

  114. Melissa Marsh says:

I can barely read this without crying. I loved Boomer’s pictures and watching him frolic with Annabelle. What a sweet puppy. I am praying for a miracle.

  115. Linda Zoldoske says:

So sorry! I’ll miss him too. I liked seeing him in the photos and absolutely loved the video of him and Amanda playing.

  116. Chickenlady62 says:

So sad to hear about Boomer :hissyfit: . Will say a prayer for the little guy hoping he surprises you.

  117. GrammieEarth says:

Awww πŸ™ I’m feeling for everyone that loves Boomer. I hope he comes bounding up the lane asking everyone ‘where have you been’?

Growing up we had many, and mostly, outdoor cats that were allowed to come inside if they so desired. One we called Pieface…after it licked out the center of a Thanksgiving pumpkin pie! That cat would disappear every winter after ‘the holidays’ only to show up again just before Thanksgiving. I swear he did that for at least ten years in a row until he became a no-show.

I hope Boomer is bouncing wherever he may be. McD’s FF (anything) are not good for dogs or humans!

    HUGS
    Pam

  118. Debbie L says:

I will miss Boomer too – he was such a little personality, even just in photos. It must be a horrible feeling just not to “know”. Stranger things have happened, particularly with dogs…maybe he will still come home, but if he doesn’t he was blessed to have found you as a family and it’s obvious that he was loved for the time he had at the farm. So sad about the lambs too – that would be the hardest part of farm live for me.

  119. claudia w says:

I’m bummed out! I really, really like Boomer! I’m so sorry Suzanne. I can’t help but hope he went on a little spring break and will be home after the party dies down!

  120. Barbara W says:

So sorry, what a trio Coco, Casper and Boomer were.

  121. Yankee Gal says:

Absolute total bummer…can only tell you my heart hurts for you right now. The loss of a beloved little guy like Boomer is the pits. *Hugs* πŸ˜₯

  122. CindyS says:

Oh, Suzanne, I’m so sorry … losing a pet is just heartbreaking.

  123. Kelly Walker says:

I’m so, so sorry to hear this. Tears falling for all of you. He was such a sport! Know we are thinking of all of you and Boomer.

  124. BeverlyC says:

So sorry for your loss πŸ™

  125. farmershae says:

I’m so sorry Boomer’s gone missing. I’m going to hope that he went to hang out with another family for a while. Wherever he is, thank goodness he had such a wonderful life the past couple years with you. We lost half our flock to (assumed) coyotes last year. Maybe it’s time to pull out the rifle again and hope for a glimpse of one. A farmer’s got to do what a farmer’s got to do!!!!

  126. gen says:

Gut wrenchingly sad. He was such a perfect pooch for your farm and will clearly leave a huge hole there…so sad for you all and will miss his cheeky stories.

  127. Susan says:

How sad! Mother Nature, she’s large and in charge. Boomer had the best life ever.

  128. Dot says:

Cheryl–not trying to hijack the thread–I firmly believe there are animals in Heaven! After all, Eden was created to be Heaven on earth, and it was full of animals. So if there ARE coyotes (and spiders and snakes and skeeters–ugh) they will all be perfect and well behaved and lion-lying-down-with-the-lamb sorts. I’ll still take a while to get used to them, though…

  129. Valeria says:

Oh Boomer! Say it ain’t so! So very sorry about Boomer. He was a charmer. Sorry about the lambs too. Very sad indeed. πŸ™

  130. Jean says:

Oh dear…I hope Boomer surprises you and shows up back home and has just been out on a toot! Coyotes are here as well. I live in town across from a park that borders on farmland and you can hear them howling when a train goes by. I am always afraid for my cat and keep him up at night.I am sorry about your lambs too.Something needs to be done about these predators.

  131. MMT says:

So sorry for your loss. I know how our animals become beloved family members and how hard it is when they are gone. When it happens like this, atleast we can have our hopes that they are somewhere else having a new adventure and a wonderful life. Hang in there Suzanne.

  132. Marge says:

I’m so sorry to read this, Suzanne. Our pets are our family, too. I loved reading about Boomer!

  133. Jenny W says:

Oh I am so, so sorry. It is never easy to lose a pet and buddy.

Here’s hoping he came across some wonderful person who took him in.

  134. AnnieB says:

Awwwww, Suzanne, I’m so very very sorry! I will pray for him.

  135. Angela says:

Oh Suzanne, that breaks my heart! Out of all of the animals we met on your farm at the party Boomer was our favorite. My son wanted to take him home. That was the first time I’ve heard the story of how you got Boomer. I really hope that he comes home! Sorry about the baby sheep.

    Angela

  136. Theresa Brownlee says:

I’m going to miss Boomer, this post made me very sad and brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes nature is unfair. Boomer always maskes me smile he was a busy little guy kind of like “the inspector”. I’m sorry for your loss!

  137. lavenderblue says:

Just read about the loss of Boomer. I am so sorry about him and the lambs. I believe he was the hero, keeping the coyotes away from the rest of the livestock. No matter how many large dogs a farm has, you always need an “auxiliary” dog like Boomer do the heavy lifting. Big dogs look impressive, tough little dogs get the job done. Praying your heartache eases.
