The ducks have a routine.
Every morning.
They gotta wash up.
It’s a serious, fastidious business.
Get in there! Don’t miss anything!
I’m not making fun of you, I promise! I’m admiring your dedication.
There you go, show off, flash those wings.
I wonder if he knows there’s a feather out of place.
I think he heard me. He’s going back to work.
How does he do that with his neck?
He can really move that thing.
Look at that! Behind his back and upside down.
IS THAT A BEAK COMING OUT OF HIS FLUFFY BUTT?
Whew. That looks….almost….normal again.
I’m not making fun of you. Honest.
My point, AND I DO HAVE ONE, is actually not all this duck-washing.
Although it is quite a sight to behold.
My point is…..
….this duck used to be dark brown all over!
See????
Was he just really dirty? DOES THAT EXPLAIN ALL THE WASHING?

Juvenile vs adult plumage? Are they cross breed ducks? I don’t know much about ducks. Raised Muscovy years ago and this year I raised 4 Khaki Campbell. The Khaki Campbell came from a hatchery, but they look like crossbreed to me. Their coloring isn’t like the pictures I’ve seen. One of them has a white patch on it’s neck.

Gotta love how they change as they mature! She (I think she’s a she. I don’t see a tail curl) is absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite things to watch is my ducks distributing their oil in all of their feathers. Fascinating stuff!

Hey….don’tcha just know that fall has rushed in so quick that he/she is making sure his brown fall ducky wardrobe is gone ‘fore winter sets in (and old man winter is coming quick)…He /she is just making sure the wardrobe of winter whites are all in well before it gets here….or is he/she a snow goose…errr duck!
Brave little duckies…unlike the majority of folks that would die before wearing white after Labor day…winter white or otherwise…..

He sure is pretty now!
I think they do that to spread oil all over their feathers and make them waterproof. Is that right?
I would love to have some ducks. When I can stop working at the office and retire I will have a big pond and ducks!

The duck is putting on his winter white feathers. I know that wearing white is considered a faux pas after Labor Day (for humans), but it is considered very cutting edge in the duck comminuty.
