Where’s your tail, Annabelle?
What’d you do with it?
You’re not gonna tell me, are you?
And neither is this one.
It’s been about three weeks since Annabelle’s tail was banded. It disappeared this week while she was sleeping on the porch. She had it with her when she came up from the goat yard to spend the night on her blankie with the other dogs. (She still thinks she’s a dog.) In the morning, it was gone. The porch gates are locked shut at night, so where did it go???
I think I have an idea.
I think–
Did you eat Annabelle’s tail, Coco? WAKE UP, COCO! DID YOU EAT IT?
Coco: “I don’t remember.”

ewww dogs can be so gross. Could the tail have fallen off the porch?? Really that is just gross if Coco ate it. Why Coco why??
Coco you need to tell Annabell that she is a sheep not a dog. Looks like she is getting big enough to stay in with the sheep soon. Break it to her gentely and she will be ok with it in time. Tell her you will visit every day so she will not be all alone.

Oh, Annabelle, you have become a sheep! But you are still adorable. Coco, did you really? No, Suzanne, I think the mean rooster grabbed it and is keeping it as a weapon. :sheep: :purpleflower:

Coco is going to be such a great guardian dog! I’ve been reading up on the subject and they say if the dog is raised with the baby lambs they really get attached. Annabell is one very lucky little lamb. Even if Coco ate her tail! lol

Let’s hope Coco didn’t eat the tail, you certainly don’t want your guard dog to develop a taste for sheep. You can tell, check Coco’s teeth, if she did eat the tail, there will be wool on her teeth. Pay close attention to the back teeth. This is an age old method to find sheep-killing dogs, if they eat any part of a sheep, the wool will get caught around their teeth every time, and it won’t come loose for weeks. Check around the gum line. You can also take a soft bristled toothbrush and brush Coco’s teeth and see if there is any wool on the toothbrush.
Be forewarned, it has been my experience that once a dog develops a taste for sheep, they can’t be cured! I hope and pray that the tail just fell through the cracks on the porch.

See how easy that was? Less than a minute to apply the band. Sit back and wait. No tail – and Annabelle gets to join the ranks of the big sheep. As for what happened to the tail? Who knows.

Some farmers/ranchers who have guard dogs that live with the stock with strong bonding, such as I assume this one will in time, let the dog eat the afterbirth.
On April 9, 2009 at 9:38 am
stephaniej says:
Coco may have eaten the tail. A good guardian dog will eat things like that to keep predators away. If the herd is out in the field, and a goat or sheep gives birth, they will eat the afterbirth and clean everything up to make sure predators won’t be attracted by the smell. It’s their “job” by nature, and Coco will be a wonderful guardian dog!

Oh my gosh! You couldn’t make that up…as they say. Well maybe a novelist could (ha ha) but I never would’ve thought of such a thing. I know Coco loves Annabelle but I’m worried that now she may be seeing her in a more “appetizing” light. eek!

My guess is that you are correct! Coco ate the tail. Dogs will do this. My hubby gave our Jack Russell a squirrel tail to play with and he ate the whole thing! He wanted to eat the rest of him too, but I wouldn’t let him. I guess that was like giving him a hairy bone to chew on!! Doris
