Wherefore Art Thou, Romeo?

Clover is lovelorn.

Her babies are five months old. She’s moved on. She’s been watching Meg Ryan movies and listening to Barry Manilow CDs and eating too many cookies. She wants a man.

And not just any man. She wants Cowboy.

Cowboy is the one on the right. The black-and-white stud with blue eyes. Blue eyes in goats are so cool. I’m hoping Clover will have blue-eyed babies if she is bred by Cowboy. Clover is just hoping for a hot date. She doesn’t care about the blue eyes. I do. Clover was bred previously with Champ (on the left). Champ is Nutmeg’s and Honey’s papa. Not that he cares or has sent any child support recently. (The one in the middle is a wether, like Honey. Neutered. He isn’t going to be anyone’s papa and he doesn’t care.)

Clover appeared to be in heat this past weekend (appeared to be in heat means she was mooning about with her tail straight up and bleating nonstop), but snow prevented us from setting her up to get knocked up. In order to be sure next time she appears to be in heat (in case we have to decide whether or not braving snow is in order), we got a buck rag.

What is a buck rag? Rub down an “aromatic” buck with a cloth then stick it in a canning jar or a Ziploc bag. (The note reads: Suzanne–Eau de buck. –Pete) When you think a doe is in heat, you let her sniff the cloth and see if she gets excited.

I got this buck rag from Pete and Missy, our nearby goat farmer friends and Clover’s former owners. I didn’t get to see Pete rub Cowboy down, though that might have been interesting….. Well, if you’re me and I’m weird. Missy dropped the sealed buck rag off over at the old farmhouse. I called Georgia and said, “Missy’s dropping off a buck rag. Okay, never mind, just don’t open it. Trust me, you don’t want to.”

Hopefully, Clover’ll come into heat again in a few weeks. I’ll show her the buck rag and we’ll rush her over to Cowboy’s arms.

And we’ll have babies in the spring.

These are some of the bucklings born at Pete and Missy’s farm this summer. If you’re in the market for a Nigerian Dwarf buck, let me know and I’ll hook you up. They have a few extra.

Of course, I want Clover to have doelings. Lots of doelings.

You’ll cooperate, won’t you, Clover?

CLOVER?!

I have cookies……….

  2. Patty says:

Cowboy, what a great name for Clover’s love interest! The blue eyes are gorgeous, but I have to say Champ is quite a handsome buck too. His face looks quite mischievous. I am so excited now! I can’t wait to see pics of newborn baby goats. I’ve held a few in my day, and they’re just precious!!! You’re so lucky

  3. Alison says:

It will be interesting to see what color of baby(s) you end up with this time. Good luck getting Clover knocked up. 🙂

  4. The Random Muse says:

You make me want goats, and sheep, and Great Pyrenees, and fresh cheese I made myself, shoot – a whole farm. Unfortunately, none of that is practical in my trailer, in someone else’s back yard, in a densely populated area of the world.
I shall continue to live vicariously through you

  5. Patricia Herman says:

    Come on Clover its time…..

Love that picture Suzanne. You get the best shots of Clover and her expressions. Love them!

    Have a great Friday!

  6. TeresaH says:

I think you should feed her some rum cake before she meets cowboy to help put her in the mood! LOL

  7. Heidi says:

When goat love is in the air, it can be quite smelly,,, the bucks pee on themselves – great male hygene in Gods creatures huh!!! They all pee where they want to!!! LOL

  8. Carolyn A. says:

That Cowboy is one good looker. I think Clover would go for that big time! I hope they can get together as I would love to see the babies they would make. xxoo

  9. mattilda says:

I LOVE your blog!! Fun, interesting and EDUCATIONAL too!

  10. Heidi says:

Champ should be named Elvis with that “flip” of hair over his forehead.

I hope you get to breed Clover with Cowboy. He looks like he will make some pretty babies.

It’s getting harder and harder to wait another (just over a) year for my goats.

  11. IowaCowgirl says:

aaahhhh, goat sex….sigh….the romanticism of it all

  12. IowaDeb says:

From Rags to Riches..Sounds like a goat fairy tale Suzanne..lol

  13. beth says:

I wanna NDG…NOW!!! I’ve contacted the folks who are the heads of the INDGA. Turns out they are in MY town! I think it’s a sign. I’m hoping to get set up to get a couple goats late spring, early summer.

  14. DragonLady says:

The boys are all handsome, however if I were Clover, I’d go for “Cowboy”!

  15. Becky says:

Cowboy sure is a handsome fella.
Goats don’t stay in season long, do they?

  16. Suzette says:

What will Clover’s being preggers do to the milking situation?

Wait, never mind. That’s probably not a real issue, anyway. :rotfl:

  17. Robin G. says:

Cowboy is indeed a handsome chappie. Blue-eyed goat babies would be incredibly awesome.

  18. JeannieB says:

My life is so pathetic (sp?) that I am excited for Clover. Her love life is more fun than mine, cookies and a cowboy! WOW!

  19. Nancy in Atlanta says:

Cowboy is hot!!! Oops, that’s what Clover is supposed to be. So you have to haul the bride to the groom’s farm? Isn’t it Clover’s turn to say “my place” now that she has her own place? Nutmeg and Honey could hang out in your kitchen if you’re afraid it would be too traumatic for them to witness!!!! :catmeow:

  20. Mim says:

Thought I wanted “goats” until Tuesday. Thats when the boer goat showed up at my house and he was very stinky. His owner finally got him Thursday morning… After this experience of trying to contain him & keep him away from my alpacas & llama, I think I am in the market for only very small dwarf/miniature goats and after all this I don’t know how my husband would feel about them either. But our grandson really liked the boer goat, it was just too big for him since he is only 21 months old so I may be able to use this tactic to get the dwarf/miniature ones. :treehugger:

  21. Lena says:

Goat Love! Oh my gosh – your entry cracks me up. We had a billy goat a number of years ago. Just had him for one summer as we were keeping him for someone else. He didn’t like our dogs at all and they were scared of him. When I was in the house he would stand on the deck looking in the patio door and bellaring that he wanted to come in too.

  22. Granny Sue says:

Too funny. I remember when we had lovelorn goats–and cows. Cows will walk through barbed wire fences, bawling their heads off, to get to a bull. Of course, there was the cow who never understood which way the mating thing worked and wanted to mount the bull instead of the other way around…

  23. Jodie says:

I hope Clover is able to mate with her boyfriend Cowboy. Need cookies! Many cookies!

  24. shirley says:

Geez………..goat rag………Oh, the things we do for love.LOL
Jovan Musk or Drakkar always worked for me.
That Cowboy is ONE HOT DUDE!

  25. Mental P Mama says:

Well, I sure am going to have some interesting stuff to talk about at tomorrow night’s Christmas Party. :bananadance:

  26. Kim W says:

Wow! If I were Clover I’d pick Cowboy, too! He’s a cutie! Those 3 bucks looked like a picture in my child-hood book of Billy Goats Gruff. It had beautiful illustrations.

    Blessings from Ohio…

  27. Leah says:

🙂 I love it that I have Cowboy and his buds picture to keep on my Chickens in the Road calendar! Maybe the next calendar will have Clovers babies and a little lamb.

  28. Kris says:

I LOVE Nigerian Dwarf goats – I want one or two in the worst way – so does my little guy. We (the boys and I) fell in love with them at the fair last summer. Immediately we worked on a scheme that would make it possible to have one. Hubby on the other hand wants nothing to do with them – claims we are busy enough with chickens, pigs, lizards, dog, cats – blah, blah, blah.
He goes on and on like that you know.
Those blue eyes on Cowboy are hauntingly beautiful – but then again so are my Hubby’s so I best not bring a goat home. Guess I will stick with my two-legged cowboy instead!

  29. Leah says:

P.S.If you do’nt have Suzanne’s Chickens in the Road 2009 calendar, you should order one for yourself! You deserve a special Christmas gift for yourself. :weather:

  30. Brandy says:

I did NOT know that goats could have blue eyes! Hope the “mating” goes well.

  31. Estella says:

Cowboy is a very nice looking buck. Lets hope Clover looooves him!

  32. Susan says:

Cowboy is one handsome dude! He an Clover should make some very good looking babies.

  33. Donna says:

Well that was certainly informative and interesting!!! Before you know it, I’ll know all about a farm and farm animals and can maybe help run a farm one day. LOL You just NEVER KNOW! Right Suzanne? :sheepjump:

  34. Tina Marie says:

I dont know Cowboy look’s like one of those goats who know’s he is good looking, won’t call the next morning or even admit he’s met Clover before after his night of lovin… Dont do it … Clover needs a goat with a steady paycheck and lots of hay in the barn… or cookies…

  35. catslady says:

Makes me think of the song by Toni and Tanille, Muskrat Love.

  36. Cranberry says:

OMG those are gorgeous boy-goats!!! look at that hair, I’m so jealous! I’d even sport that Cruella-De-Ville look for that hair! Oh to be a female goat! hee hee! :sheepjump:

  37. Cetta says:

I do believe Cowboy is the most beautiful goat I’ve ever seen – no wonder Clover is mooning over him!

  38. Amy Addison says:

Clover and Cowboy are gonna need some PRIVACY.

Hmmm, maybe you should be giving the cookies to Cowboy if you really want doelings…

  39. Olivia says:

Maybe a little mood music? Maybe the Gooooat Gooooat Girls!!
