School & Camp Groups

Come learn at the farm!

Educational events at the farm are geared to smaller groups in an intimate atmosphere.
Retreats and workshops take place at Sassafras Farm– home of Chickens in the Road–located in the beautiful Appalachian foothills of Roane County, West Virginia.

School, homeschool, and camp groups–and private parent/child groups–are welcome! Below, find examples of planned events–OR let us customize an event just for you! Email Suzanne at [email protected] to get started.

Want to make an amazing memory with the kids in your life? Whether your group is from a school, a camp, or you’re a private group of parents and children, personalized retreat half-days are available for groups of teachers/parents/guardians with children. (Children should be at least 5 years of age to participate and must be accompanied by a paid attendee teacher/parent/guardian. At least one adult must be attending per every four to six children, depending on ages of the children.) Your day will span four hours, which will include lunch, one workshop (selected from the list below), collecting eggs from the chickens, milking the cow, feeding treats to the goats, making butter, and touring the farm.

Workshops are available in cheesemaking, preserving, candlemaking, soapmaking, and in a variety of baking and cooking topics such as cake pops, breadbaking, homemade ice cream and waffle cones, and more. The retreat will be geared to you!

A typical day will last from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost for half-day school group workshops is $50 per person, including lunch. Teachers/parents/guardians must also be paid attendees and participate in all activities with the children. Private retreats can take place on any day not already taken by a scheduled event.
