The Canning Garden (BBB)

Mar
23

This is our third stab at rhubarb. I hope it works this time! (One attempt fell victim to chickens, another to a too-wet spring.) I want some rhubarb pie and jam and sauce! Rhubarb bread, rhubarb muffins, rhubarb cake! There are so many things you can make with rhubarb, and it can even be canned alone, hot-packed with sugar, to save until you decide. It’s great mixed with so many other fruits, too.

Rhubarb is a love-it or hate-it thing. I used to not like it. My great-aunt Ruby always had rhubarb in her garden. Her rhubarb was still going when I first moved into the old farmhouse. My cousin loathes rhubarb and I think he killed it. (I’m just kidding. Maybe. Only he knows!)

What about you? Do you love it or hate it? And do you want a BBB?! (Plenty of rhubarb know-how in there if you’re a lover.) What’s popping up early in your canning garden?

I like rhubarb mixed with strawberries. I have nothing early in my garden. It was too hot and dry last summer here is SC and everything died. Hope to do better this year! Love to win the BBB!
    Thanks-love your site!

Would love to win the BBB for my niece, who is just getting interested in canning. Unfortunately, rhubarb doesn’t grow here, I have to buy it frozen from the grocery. It’s rather hard to find, but I do like it mixed with apples in a pie.

  7. glenda says:

I am struggling with rhubarb too! I have lost more plants than I can believe. I have hopes with the last one. I wintered it over in the pot and saw a beautiful pink stalk sticking up through the mulch..Of course, I broke it off when uncovered the pot.

I am still thinking about where to put it.

I love it cooked down with sugar and spread on hot biscuits and I love rhubarb pie….no custard, just made like a regular fruit pie.

I have a BBB so don’t want to enter.

  8. BunnyRuth says:

With the approach of spring I decided that I needed to use up the rhubarb and strawberries still in my freezer from last year. So I baked up a big strawberry rhubarb crisp for DH… who LOVES it. Personally I am not crazy about it but that’s a lright. Our landlord from Maine had about 20 HUGE plants that he never harvested and invited us to take as much as we wanted so I got used to having it (after all free is free, my favorite price) and when we left we took a plant with us. It is still going strong (or will be once the snow finally stops and melts.

    Come on Spring!
    Ruth in NH :pinkbunny:

    BBB please.

I love Rhubarb. When I moved to SW Kentucky it was too warm in the winter to grow Rhubarb. Every time I went north I tried to plan the trip during Rhubarb season. My Husband and I are moving back up north. I hope we have Rhubarb in the yard. If not I will be planting some. Since we are moving this summer I am not planting a garden, but I canned plenty last year and will plant as soon as I can up north. I would like a new BBB.

  26. Sheepie-girl says:

  31. Brittany P. says:

I have to admit that I have never tried rhubarb but want to plant some in my garden. Right now we have our eyes on the wild crab apple trees that our all over our property. I want to do some canning with those. Please enter me for the BBB! :moo:

  32. Myrna Mackenzie says:

I really wanted to love rhubarb, but…I didn’t, and we had some, (and it was probably sad, feeling unloved, and wondering why it was growing in such a terrible place where no one even wanted it). ๐Ÿ˜ฅ But then we found neighbors who coveted it, so we gave it away. And everyone–including the rhubarb–lived happily ever after (including us, because we felt less guilty about letting a perfectly good rhubarb plant go to waste). The thing is, I still really want to love it. I see strawberry rhubarb pie and it feels as if something I really should like more than I do. Sigh.

  33. teri says:

    would love a bbb!

  34. Julia says:

I don’t think I have ever tried rhubarb…If I ever see it in the grocery store, how much should I get and what should I do with it?

BBB Please? My mom used to love rhubarb. I can’t remember if I like it or not.

  37. MNStacey says:

I did have Rhubarb bread last summer that I did not hate. I can’t get over the sourness of rhubarb, but the bread had enough crispy sweet stuff on top that it cut the sharpness. I’m willing to keep trying to like it.

We do not have anything popping up in our garden, especially as we just had an ice storm and about 6 inches of snow last night! Unfortunately for Minnesotans, Spring doesn’t come until May. *sigh*

I would love a BBB book, though! So I can look through it and dream of all the garden stuff that will EVENTUALLY grow in my garden! ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. morningstar says:

We all just love rhubarb here, mine is just about ready for the first pulling of the year. Yummy a nice pie for Sunday dinner desert will go down a real treat. We used to put sugar in a paper bag and dip a stick of Rhubarb in it as a sweet and sour treat when I was a kiddie !!! Please could I be entered for the BBB draw ? Thank you

  39. holstein woman says:

I send rhubarb to Montana every year to a couple who don’t have any there. I have it canned and strawberries frozen and make pies with the two combined. Mine didn’t make it last year when I planted it. I am going to try again this year, but have a friend who said I am to get hers until mine gets going, so I have a couple of sources.
BTW, my grandmother in Virginia (years ago) had rhubarb in her garden planted in #3 galvanized tubs. She said it needed to be planted in a hill. Hers lived for as long as I can remember in those tubs.
I am going to teach a neighbor to can and would love to give him a BBB. Thank you for another opportunity to have one for a gift.

I grew up eating rhubarb stalks dipped in sugar. Yum. I love everything rhubarb. Pure only, no strawberries for me. I visit my mom in Montana every year and I always request “something rhubarb” and she never disappoints me. I tried transplanting some of her rhubarb and I think they would have made it except the farmer next door must have sprayed for weeds on a slightly windy day. I’ll have to try again. BBB please.

  45. mammaleigh says:

I have honestly never had Rhubarb anything! But would love to have the BBB!

  46. LeAnn says:

I love rhubarb! We have “strawberry rhubarb”, that was here when we moved here 20+ years ago. It gets gorgeous red, but tastes doesn’t taste any different than regular rhubarb. We had to move it a few years ago and it hasn’t done well. I think it is too wet were it is. ๐Ÿ™

  49. Sherri says:

I have never tried rhubarb, I guess it’s not a big thing here in OK. (Or maybe just in my family!) BBB please.

  50. Joy (from Illinois) says:

Love rhubarb! Love asparagus! Something about those early crops that pop up every year makes me feel like I’m getting away with something as a gardener since I didn’t have to laboriusly dig, hoe, weed, etc. They were the very first things I put in my garden when I first got a house. How I hated to move away from them! I’d love the BBB if I’m chosen.

  51. Louise says:

I have not had rhubarb either. Enter me in the BBB drawing.

  52. Rachel says:

    OK, funny “rhubarb story”…

When I first moved here to MN I was very NOT familiar with all the local slangs and terms etc. The hubby and I were driving along on an icy road and he commented “Oops, better slow down or we’ll be in the rhubarb!” (we were dating at the time, and my response apparently won his heart…) I said “Rhubarb!? There’s rhubarb!? I LOVE rhubarb! Rhubarb pie, rhubarb muffins, rhubarb jam…” as he just kind of looked at me like I was speaking Greek.

I do LOVE rhubarb, even raw dipped in sugar like a celery stick its good!

    BBB me please!

  53. Ladychef says:

  118. Diana says:

Rhubarb is great…so versitile! I used to not like it (wouldnt eaven try it actually, lol) but then a neighbor was moving and offerered me his plants. At first I didnt want them but then he said I could make jelly with them. Well, we eat sugar-free jam and dont get fruit much because of the expense so I jumped at the chance to have something to make jam out of. It has been great. We have had it on its own and also with strawberry for the jam. I use the low methoxl (sp?) pectin and can make it per jar if I dont feel like canning a bunch.

We have ours in containers which means we have to be careful that they always have plenty of water in the summer but they are thriving well.

I dont have anything coming up for canning right now but my chives, parsley, thyme, and chard are big and fluffy (oregon).

    Anyway, yes…BBB me ๐Ÿ™‚

  150. The Reluctant Homesteaders says:

I adore rhubarb. When we are crunched for time when it is ready to be harvested, we just slice it up and put it in bags in the freezer, we don’t even blanch it. We get the bags out all year long and sprinkle the pieces into pies and cobblers. Yum, my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
We nearly lost our first plantings of rhubarb here at the homestead too. I think they were sick when we bought them at the nursery, but a record wet summer and the “free range” chickens almost finished them off. The rhubarb plants are now ensconced in a cone of stones to keep those rascally chickens out and I think it improved the drainage.
I have to go now to make a Marion berry and rhubarb cobbler now…. I’m pretty sure there is some vanilla ice cream in the freezer.

@ MMHoney.. you have gooseberry?! You lucky, lucky person you! I think it makes the BEST jam – and a lovely fool. I really wish blackcurrants and gooseberrys (and crab apples!) were more commonly found here:(
