Morgan got Monday off school for MLK Day. Then she got her birthday off. She did go to school yesterday (whew, rough week!) and now today school is closed for snow.
At least that gives her a little extra time for her makeup work! I meant to post this picture yesterday:
Morgan (with boyfriend) and her box mix birthday cupcake. Unfortunately, I thought I had birthday candles then discovered at the last minute that I DID NOT.
So she pretended to blow out a candle. We are all about living in our imaginations here at Sassafras Farm.
Maude the cat observed from above.
Today, snow, snow, and more snow, and carrying buckets of water to the animals from the house because my barn faucets are frozen. Yes, the fix a few weeks ago did NOT work and I’ll have to have that addressed again. Meanwhile, the exercise is good for me and the cold air is bracing! Yes, I will keep telling myself that….

Wrap that hydrant in heat tape! Ours is inside our barn away from the drafts and elements but we still have heat tape on it. Water is a must in the winter, especially warm water for the horses. Do you have heated water buckets in the stalls? How about a stock tank with a heater? Hate that you have to work your way through all this!! You have come so far and it will only keep getting better!

Love the pic of Maude up on top of the cupboard! That must be her lookout spot.

My horse tub has a heater (35 degrees) and a bubbler but my faucet on the side of the house was frozen so last night we carried water too. Oh yes….bracing….good for us….. 😕 We have to run two hoses to reach and would have to have drained them both again after we used the faucet if it had been willing and able to give us water – so I told myself that carrying the buckets wasn’t that much more work. Hopefully this afternoon I can use the faucet.

What beautiful scenery! It’s so cold up here in Ohio that my boogers freeze, my breath fogs up my glasses, and then the fog on my glasses freezes! Time to switch to contacts when going out.
I’m sure you’re relishing this time with your daughter! 🙂

Hi! Instead of carrying the buckets, get a plastic sled (the kind with little sides) and slide the buckets. I use this for bringing water to my chickens and rabbits. Its so much easier!

Ok, I just have to say it, fully aware of the fact that I sound just like my mother, but… Look at the way the boy looks at her!!! That says more to me than anything. Methinks he is smitten.

You have more snow there than we do here in MN. Go figure. The temperature is -2 this morning. I remember the years our water would freeze in the barns and we would carry boiling water from the house and pour it over the hydrant. I remember having to disconnet the hoses and drain them too. I have many good memories of living on the farm. Now I’m retired and living in town.

That is so funny! I made Morgan go look at last year’s post. She had forgotten also that I didn’t have candles last year either–and she made me go get some! I told her she is so much more laidback now! She didn’t make me go get any candles this year!

When I was a kid, we had to walk to school 5 miles each way through 6 foot snow drifts. – up hill both ways!!! (You knew you would get one of these, didn’t you?!) Actually, I only lived a couple of blocks from school. The first picture of the barn covered in snow is beautiful. What a place to live!

Lana….what, you didn’t have to fight off bears with a three-ring binder as well?
I also remembered that last year you had to go to the store for birthday candles. I thought to myself how Morgan has matured a lot over the last year.

Good Morning. Beautiful snow picture.
Happy Birthday to Morgan. Does her t-shirt say ” Chickens in the Road? :chicken:
Maude has such a pretty heart-shaped face looking down at you folks from her perch on the kitchen cabinet.
There’s some good ideas, like the plastic sled to slide pails of water, the heated water buckets for the horses, ( I’m enjoying my new car with heated front seats! Why not heated comforts for the farm animals , Too!!!,
Thoroughly enjoy reading your blog and wished I lived closer for an Open house visit to the farm or some lessons.
Happy Friday from N.J. Grace
